Chapter 249: 249

"What?" It took a moment for Yang Ze to realise the meaning behind her words as his eyes widened in response. For a moment, he thought he was hearing things.

"This is why I hate talking to old farts." The woman mumbled to herself in displeasure before repeating what she said earlier.

"Only women are allowed in the Imperial City."

"So, if you want to go there, I would suggest you give up."

Yang Ze’s expression changed rapidly as he tried to make sense of the meaning behind her words. He wanted to ask a few more questions, but the woman was once again looking at the flame in front of her as if it were the most interesting thing that she had ever seen.

Yang Ze thought for a moment before reaching inside his robe and taking out a handful of gold coins.

"This young lady..." with a smile that would make any child cry, he stood up and walked beside the woman before placing the gold coins in front of her.

"Can you explain to me clearly? This old man has wasted his life living in a small town, taking care of family business. Now that I am at the death’s door, I wish to take a look at this world’s grandeur."

When Yang Ze stood up from his position, the woman put her hand inside her robe, as if reaching out for something and when the old man stood directly beside her, she was already holding it tightly. Any rash move by the old bastard, she would chop off his head.

But to her surprise, the old man didn’t make a move on her. Instead, he placed a handful of gold coins in front of her.

Looking at the dim firelight reflecting on the shining surface of the gold coin, almost blinding her, her hand unconsciously let go of the thing she was holding inside her robe as she swallowed a mouthful of saliva.

Even the gaze with which she looked at the old man had completely changed.

She couldn’t help but look at the old man beside her from top to bottom before a gentle smile appeared on her face.

"My my... senior."

"Please accept this junior’s humble greetings." She bent down to give him a bow, and when she finished bowing, the gold coin in front of her had already disappeared, and a satisfied smile appeared on her face.

"How can I help you?" With such an unexpected windfall out of nowhere, she found the old man beside her pleasing to the eye. The previous disgust and carelessness have replaced by an expression of fawning.

"...." Seeing the sudden shift in her personality, Yang Ze couldn’t help but click his tongue in wonder. Money truly is the greatest weapon.

"Like I said... I always wanted to go out and travel, but never got the chance to."

"Now I want to fulfil this wish of mine before dying."

Speaking till here, his voice grew hoarse, and one could clearly feel the tinge of regret in it.

"I had heard about the Imperial City throughout my life, but never got a chance to appreciate its splendour."

"Now I wish to see it with my own eyes."

"....."

"....."

His seemingly innocent words caught the woman by surprise, who in turn couldn’t help but glance at him a few more times, wondering if he was telling the truth or just messing with her. But upon looking at his sincere face and the weight of gold in her pocket, she swallowed the mockery that she was about to throw before speaking in a soft voice.

"How much do you know about the Imperial City?"

Her question caught Yang Ze by surprise, but he didn’t think too much about it and answered honestly.

"Other than the fact that it is the capital of Yan Kingdom... nothing else."

"Well, that explains it." The woman simply nodded in response, expecting such an answer.

"In that case, let me give you a brief introduction to that place."

Taking a deep breath, the woman closed her eyes for a while before reopening them. This time, the indifference in her eyes was gone, replaced by a solemn expression as she began to narrate.

"The Azure Dragon Continent is ruled by thirteen Major Sects."

"And each sect has established one or more Royal Dynasties under them."

"Though calling them royal is magnanimous. It would be better to call them dogs, because that’s what they are." Her eyes flashed for a moment as she gritted her teeth while speaking those words.

"The might sects need time and resources to cultivate. They can not simply run around looking for resources."

"Thus, they established an order. An order under their jurisdiction."

"These people would be the ones responsible for gathering resources, farming, hunting and doing everything to make the lives of the Sect members comfortable. And in return, they would get the sect’s protection."

"They would be able to rule over people... get guidance from the sect itself and even be appointed as the sect members."

Listening till here, Yang Ze nodded in response. When he first heard about the so-called Yan and Qin Kingdoms, he too had similar thoughts, but couldn’t confirm them.

And now that the woman was telling him those exact words, he couldn’t help but click his tongue in wonder.

"The Yan Kingdom... The place where we are is the place controlled by the Heavenly Sword Sect"

"The Heavenly Sword Sect provides the Yan kingdom with training and protection, whereas the Yan Kingdom provides the sect with resources and new talented individuals."

"In a way, it is a win-win situation."

"I see." Yang Ze merely gave her a nod in response before asking with some doubts.

"But what is the deal with the restriction that only women can enter the Imperial city?" This was what confused him the most. Why would there be such a ridiculous restriction in the mortal world? Why would the so-called royalty care about the men’s presence in their city? The more he thought about it, the less sense it all made.

"Heh." The moment Yang Ze asked this question, the woman scoffed in response as if offended by the lack of knowledge.

"Have you ever visited the Heavenly Sword Sect or read about it?"

"Umm.... No." Yang Ze couldn’t tell her that he had been living in the Heavenly Sword Sect for quite a while now, could he?

"Well, I could tell you this..." The woman took a sharp breath as she spoke further.

"There is not a single man present in the Heavenly Sword Sect."

"I don’t know the reason, but there are all kinds of rumours."

"And the imperial city seems to follow the same rule as well."

"EH!?" Yang Ze couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow in response. Now that he recalled, he was the only man in the Heavenly Sword Sect. There was even a lot of opposition when he first stayed there as a guest after being saved by one of the Grand Elders from the Duality Sect.

Till now, he never bothered to pay any attention to why it was the case. In his mind, it was just some weird rule like his previous life on Earth, where there would be all-female clubs or schools.

But now that the woman mentioned it, he couldn’t help but wonder if there was some special reason behind it.

"But why?" He didn’t want to suppress the doubt in his heart, so he directly asked her.

"I can understand about the Heavenly Sword Sect, but why the imperial city as well?"

"Hah!"

"HAHAHAHAHAHAH"

The woman suddenly burst out laughing as if she heard something really funny.

Yang Ze, on the other hand, looked at her in confusion, wondering if there was something on his face or if he said something.

It wasn’t until a few moments passed that the woman’s laughter stopped. Wiping the corner of her eyes, she shook her head while looking at Yang Ze before answering him.

"The person who founded the Yan kingdom was an Elder of the Heavenly Sword Sect."

"Even the current queen of the Yan Kingdom is a member of the Heavenly Sword sect."

"Rumours are that the current queen is the disciple of a mighty Grand Elder."

Her words instantly made Yang Ze’s breathing stop as his eyes narrowed into slits.

He wasn’t expecting the current Queen of the Yan Kingdom to be a member of the Heavenly Sword Sect, and from the sounds of it, she wasn’t a normal member either.

"Wait..." It was at this moment that he recalled her words before asking with a frown.

"You just said that the so-called royal family was like a dog. Why would you say that if the origin of the royal family is actually the Sword Sect and the current queen is even a member of the Sect?"

The more he thought about it, the less sense it all made. He couldn’t help but gaze at the woman sitting in front of him, wondering if she was actually telling the truth or not. He even began to doubt that he was conversing with a woman who had gone crazy.

"....." The woman, on the other hand, didn’t give him an answer this time but went silent. She kept her eyes closed, but the occasional trembling of her eyelids was enough to display the turmoil in her heart. Unfortunately, Yang Ze didn’t seem to notice it. He was still waiting for her to answer.

It wasn’t until a few more minutes passed that he gazed at the woman who was still sitting with her eyes closed, clearly not interested in talking, before shaking his head and walking back to the corner of the room to sit.

Seconds turned into minutes as the rain outside showed no signs of stopping. On the contrary, it only grew stronger.

’I should use a clone to enter the imperial city first and know more about it instead of heading there headfirst.’ Initially, Yang Ze was going to enter the Imperial City directly. In his mind, it was just another city, with nothing to worry about. But after hearing the woman sitting beside the flame, he couldn’t help but mutter to himself.

Even if she were telling a lie, he decided to be careful.

"Judging by your reaction, you don’t seem to believe me." It was at this moment that the woman’s voice sounded in Yang Ze’s ears once again, who in turn didn’t answer.

"Well, I wouldn’t believe a stranger I met in a shady place either." The woman shrugged in response before adding further.

"How about it..."

"Though a man can not enter the Imperial city, there is no restriction on watching it from the outside."

"You can try your luck there."

"Perhaps you might get lucky and be taken as a pet by a noble lady."

"He he he he he he..." Listening to her wretched laugh, Yang Ze’s eyes narrowed with displeasure as he let out a cold snort and waited there in silence.

Thankfully, after a few hours, the rain stopped.

"It’s gonna rain again, isn’t it?" Looking at the dark, cloudy sky, Yang Ze couldn’t help but shake his head before taking one last look at the woman sitting beside the fire and walking out of the ruined building.

Then, without wasting another second, he bent his knees and jumped into the air before flying away in the direction of the imperial city.

It wasn’t until he travelled for a while that a smile crept on his face as he snapped his fingers.

And the moment he did that, the woman sitting in the ruined building suddenly felt a tremor in her heart as she reached inside her robe, but no matter how much she searched, the newly gained gold coins seemed to have disappeared.

"Damn it... unclean thing." The woman hurriedly rushed out of the building in a panic before running in the direction of the capital as well.

—-----------

It took Yang Ze almost a day to reach his destination.

Even from a distance, he could see the towering mountains that were larger than anything that he had seen, with their peaks covered in clouds.

The imperial city seemed to be constructed on these mountains with massive bridges connecting them. And at the bottom of the mountain were filled with streams that seemed to originate from the mountain top.

The entire mountain range was locked behind massive city walls, and the massive towers made from some kind of red wood were strategically placed all around with massive crossbows upon them.

The wall seemed to enclose the mountain, leaving only a single point of entry.

"Holy..." From a distance, the scenery was even more awe-inspiring.

The massive walls, the massive bridges connecting the mountains and exquisite wooden buildings all around the mountains... looking at the scene, Yang Ze felt like he was looking at an oil painting.

After taking one more look at the city, he landed before walking towards the city gate, hoping to gather more information.

For the next three hours, Yang Ze talked with the few ’men’ standing there and even talked with the guards who didn’t even look him in the eye.

"So... the woman was telling the truth, huh!"

Just as the woman said, men were forbidden from entering the city.

He thought about bribing someone or using the excuse of his dying wish, but upon looking at the guard’s stern gaze that was about to swallow him whole, he held back that thought and retreated from there.

It wasn’t until he was almost three miles away from the imperial city that he finally stopped, looked in the direction of the city, before gritting his teeth in frustration.

He seemed to be hesitating for a long time.

It wasn’t until his surroundings were completely dark that he gritted his teeth and made up his mind.

"Forget it... There doesn’t seem to be another way."

Clenching his fists in frustration, he took a deep breath and calmed the turmoil in his heart.

"Lin Meilin... you little..." How could he not understand that Lin Meilin did it purposefully?

She could have sent him anywhere, but she chose to send him to this god-forsaken place.

"I am definitely going to teach you a lesson."

Making up his mind, Yang Ze waved his hand as a simple room appeared around him.

Without batting an eye, he waved his hand once again, manifesting a mirror.

And then... enduring the humiliation in his heart, he waved his hand for the last time, casting an illusion upon himself.

Once he was done, he looked at the reflection in the mirror before taking a deep breath and cursing at the top of his lungs.

"LIN MEILIN..."
