His Mute Wife: He Can't Sleep After She Left-Chapter 175: Is Evan Shepherd Crazy?
"Today is our wedding day, and you’re actually flirting with that woman named Kiana Sutton? Am I invisible to you?"
Hearing her own name, Kiana Sutton was stunned for a moment.
She quietly poked her head out for a look, and sure enough, it was Tina Crowe and Evan Shepherd outside.
That slap just now was Tina Crowe hitting Evan Shepherd.
What’s going on? Weren’t they all lovey-dovey just now at the wedding?
Evan Shepherd lowered his head, so Kiana Sutton couldn’t see the expression on his face, but she heard him say humbly, "You misunderstood. Kiana is President Sinclair’s wife. She and I used to be friends, but now there’s nothing between us anymore."
"Smack..."
Evan Shepherd took another slap to the face.
Tina Crowe was dressed in a red qipao, her chubby face full of rage. She kept saying today was her wedding day with Evan Shepherd, but she didn’t give him a shred of respect.
Slapping her newlywed husband here, she didn’t seem to care in the least who might see.
And Evan Shepherd had no intention of fighting back at all. It was as if he was already used to it; his explanation was even-keeled, but also didn’t sound like someone resigned to their fate.
"Kiana? Hmph, if there’s nothing between you two, why do you call her so intimately? Anyone would think she’s your real lover."
"No, I don’t like her."
"Better be that way. If I catch you talking to that vixen again, don’t even think about having a good life."
"Yes."
"I’m going to change clothes. Hurry up and get me something to eat."
The protagonist today was Tina Crowe. Although Tina was not good-looking—fat and ugly—she was always surrounded by people praising her, which made her float a little, thinking she was the most beautiful and unique woman in the world.
She prepared several outfits for today, planning to shine in front of everyone.
"Okay."
Tina Crowe waddled away with her plump body. Kiana Sutton hadn’t expected to witness this just by going to the bathroom. Her feelings were complicated.
She’d thought Evan Shepherd had found true love, but it turned out it was actually like this.
"You can come out now."
Evan Shepherd’s voice suddenly sounded, making Kiana’s heart clench.
Great, did Evan see her?
If she went out now, how awkward would that be!
Kiana Sutton didn’t move, so Evan walked over toward her. The two locked eyes—Kiana’s face full of embarrassment, while Evan gave a slight smile. "Sorry you saw all that just now."
Kiana Sutton had never been this embarrassed. She gestured slowly with her hands, "I... just now... didn’t see anything, didn’t hear anything."
She’d wanted to give them both a way out, now that things had come to this, but Evan Shepherd had other ideas.
"Aren’t you curious? With her treating me like that, why would I still marry her?"
Kiana really wasn’t curious. She was about to gesture to leave, but Evan let out a quiet sigh. "I know what I did before was unforgivable. You probably don’t want to see me, but today’s my wedding day, and these are all Crowe family guests—there’s not a single person here for me. If my grandma were still alive, she would’ve been happy to see me get married."
There was loneliness written all over Evan’s face. He tried to smile, but the smile looked even worse than crying.
"Kiana, whether you believe it or not, I really did think of you as a friend back then. I feel terrible right now. Can you just keep me company for a bit, listen to me talk? Even if it’s only for a minute."
Evan Shepherd’s tone was filled with loneliness. Kiana Sutton thought of Evan’s kindly, gentle grandmother, and for her sake, she nodded lightly.
Evan gave a small smile. "Thank you."
He took out a cigarette and asked Kiana, "Do you mind?"
Kiana Sutton shook her head.
After lighting the cigarette, Evan Shepherd said slowly, "I’ve been afraid of being poor my whole life. My grandma worked herself sick to put me through school and racked up a pile of debts. I always thought that with my own efforts, I could pay off the debts and give her a happy life. But after stepping into society, I realized reality is harsher than I’d imagined."
"One wrong step, and every step is wrong after. Through Stella Lynch, I got to know Tina Crowe. But Tina’s just a spoiled rich girl, pampered by the entire Crowe Family. She’s willful and domineering; whenever she’s in a bad mood, the best is verbal abuse, the worst is laying hands, whether it’s at me or the servants."
Kiana’s brows knitted tightly. Given all this, why go through with the marriage?
As if reading her mind, Evan let out a self-mocking smile. "But what can I do? Her family is rich, and she’s interested in me. She said she wouldn’t care about my background, offered for me to marry into the Crowes. Now I’m in the Crowe family’s company, managing director of the planning department. Except that the woman I married looks ugly outside and is even uglier inside—not some beautiful socialite—I’ve achieved all my other dreams."
Kiana felt a shudder run through her. After seeing there were no people around, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Had Evan lost his mind?
Today was his wedding; he was actually cursing Tina Crowe as ugly and rotten inside? Wasn’t he afraid she’d hear him and make his life hell?
Seeing Kiana’s expression, Evan smiled faintly. "Don’t worry. Now that I’m in the Crowe family, I won’t let them kick me out so easily. People always aim higher. Since I chose this path, no matter how many thorns lie ahead, I’ll grit my teeth and keep going."
Kiana Sutton wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but she felt Evan Shepherd had changed a lot. He was no longer the cheerful boy who used to joke around with her and Amy Manning, but someone willing to do whatever it took to achieve his goals.
Evan let out a heavy sigh. "Kiana, thank you for listening to my useless rambling. I feel much better. Maybe I can’t help you with anything, but if you ever need anything in the future, you can come to me, and I’ll do everything I can."
Kiana gave a faint gesture. "Take care."
To avoid any unnecessary misunderstanding, Kiana quickly left.
She couldn’t help but sigh at what had become of Evan Shepherd—but after all, this was Evan’s own choice and life. As an outsider, she had nothing more to say. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Kiana glanced at her phone; by now the reception should be over. They probably should be heading out too, right?
Kiana was just about to find Ethan Sinclair, but as she passed by the lakeside, Kate Lynch suddenly blocked her path.
Kate Lynch had clearly had a lot to drink, her face was flushed, and she staggered as she walked.
As soon as Kiana saw Kate, her mood soured. She was about to skirt past when Kate grabbed her arm. "I heard you’ve been investigating what happened three years ago. You want so badly to know whether your father was framed or not? You don’t have to investigate. I can tell you right now."
Kiana’s face changed dramatically. She whipped her head to stare at Kate.
