How Did I Become an F1 Driver?-Chapter 85 - 76: The Little Competition (Part 2)
Chapter 85: Chapter 76: The Little Competition (Part 2)
After listening to a simple song, the two moved on to the next location.
The next area was the supercar and racing car exhibition area, with Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Audis truly everywhere, all displayed in an open-air setting.
Some cars even allowed visitors to sit inside, but of course, they weren’t the really expensive supercars.
Besides, the pavilion had many places selling items like clothes, food, drinks, and small souvenirs.
The two were also influenced by the atmosphere on site and bought many souvenirs, such as scaled-down models of F1 cars, scaled-down driver helmets, and signed photos of drivers.
Before entering the amusement area of the pavilion, the two didn’t have much, just a little money, the Ferrari team hats on their heads, and a bag.
But after half an hour of browsing, both Qin Miao and Qimeng had their hands full with things.
It must be said, it’s no wonder the grand prix, which has formed such a scale, can so easily arouse visitors’ desire to purchase.
After circling around the shops, the two reached the far end of the entertainment area, close to the exit.
However, just as they were about to leave, a simulator experience area appeared ahead, with quite a few kids dashing through it.
Seeing this place, Qin Miao instantly perked up.
This kind of place can easily captivate a young man’s interest like Qin Miao.
With a face full of excitement and curiosity, Qin Miao walked into the simulation experience area, ready to ruthlessly conquer the young British kids.
However, the scenes inside left Qin Miao somewhat disappointed, as he only saw three or four professional racing simulator setups; the rest were arcade racing games you’d find in game centers.
The few racing simulators were occupied and had quite a lineup behind them as well.
Seeing this scene, most of Qin Miao’s interest waned. Being a man set on dominating GT3, arcade racing games barely held any appeal for him.
With many people around the professional simulators, Qin Miao didn’t want to use any privileges to cut the line.
Just when Qin Miao was about to turn and leave, Qimeng noticed something like an introduction sign next to the group of people in line.
"Qin Miao, Qin Miao, look at the words up there." Qimeng tapped Qin Miao.
Qin Miao looked in the direction Qimeng was pointing.
[Amusement Challenge: If you defeat the defending driver, you will receive a mysterious gift. Note: Each person has only one challenge opportunity.]
After carefully examining the text on the sign, Qin Miao roughly understood what the group of people was doing there.
Though Qin Miao wasn’t someone who acts without benefit, seeing the explanation on the sign rekindled his interest.
In Qin Miao’s view, this was just an amusement competition; the drivers they could invite were likely professionals, but surely not at the highest level.
Otherwise, wouldn’t it be awkward for tourists coming for fun only to be heavily defeated on a simulator?
Qin Miao wasn’t confident enough to consider himself unbeatable in the country, but he felt that with his current skill level, he was at least somewhat competent.
At this moment, Qin Miao felt a bit like someone who had just studied martial arts in the deep mountains and returned. He knew he might have some skill, but exactly how much was unclear to him, so he urgently needed someone to either teach or be taught a good lesson.
Qin Miao’s original plan was to compare himself with the drivers in his team once his GT3 car was available, and then have the team’s engineers assess what areas he needed to improve.
But now there was a professional driver right here to compete with—an opportunity not to be missed.
No need to say more, Qin Miao joined the line.
During the waiting time at the back, Qin Miao also took note of the competition events.
The defending driver wore a Ferrari short-sleeve shirt and gray pants, but for some reason, he had a white racing helmet on, keeping Qin Miao from seeing his face.
There were two competition formats.
The first format had the challenger start five seconds ahead while the defender pursued from behind. If the challenger was caught and overtaken within five laps, they failed, and the next challenger took their place.
The second format allowed both parties to run flying laps without interference. The challenger could run five flying laps, while the defender only one. The final scores of both were then compared.
The track for the competition was naturally Silverstone, the site of today’s grand prix.
After waiting about 20 minutes, it was Qin Miao’s turn.
For efficiency, each match consisted of four people—a defender and three challengers.
Qin Miao sat right next to the defending driver.
The defending driver, seeing the Ferrari team hat on Qin Miao’s head and the Ferrari logo on his VIP wristband, extended a hand to Qin Miao: "Welcome."
Qin Miao didn’t sense anything unusual and shook hands with him.
While shaking hands with Qin Miao, he noticed the confidence and fighting spirit on this Ferrari VIP client’s face.
He turned his attention back to the simulator with a nonchalant smile.
Once Qin Miao was seated, he made simple adjustments to the pedal and steering wheel position.
When he was ready, he signaled to the staff member next to him.
After receiving the signal, the staff nodded, and once the other two challengers were ready, they were asked: "Which challenge format do you choose?"
Actually, Qin Miao had already decided which challenge format to choose when he was waiting in line.
After all, since they clearly presented both options, Qin Miao had no reason to choose the less favorable one.
"I choose the first option," Qin Miao said to the referee.
The other two chose the same as Qin Miao, both opting for the first format.
The referee nodded and then looked at the defending driver. Once the driver also nodded to confirm, they began the pre-race preparations.
The reason Qin Miao chose the first format wasn’t hard to guess. In this format, the opponent had to catch up with Qin Miao in five seconds and then overtake him on the track to win.
Qin Miao’s defensive skill of 79 was no joke; he had full confidence to fiercely defend against this person’s attacks before finishing the five laps.
As for why not choosing flying laps, it was quite simple: Qin Miao wasn’t highly familiar with Silverstone Circuit yet. After getting the system, he hadn’t had the time to refine his familiarity with Silverstone; his knowledge of this track mainly came from a few past eSports races on this circuit.
So, Qin Miao could only say he was fairly familiar with Silverstone, but couldn’t compare it to circuits like Spa, Red Bull Ring, or Shanghai, where he had maxed out proficiency.
The referee quickly set up the computer, and the four participants simultaneously entered the game.
The game for this competition was "F1 2019", a game Qin Miao was fairly familiar with since it’s the only officially licensed F1 game on the market.
But since this was just for amusement, the official had no need to deliberately develop any specific functions for a mini-game like this.
Thus, this competition setup was quite simple, with just a two-person duel game room.
Notably, DRS in this race was enabled from the start, not needing two laps to activate as in official races.
Silverstone Circuit is a pretty challenging high-speed track, even hosting F1’s highest G-force corner, the 9th turn, in reality.
Some race cars could make it through this corner at full throttle, hitting terrifying G-forces of 5.1G at speeds of 300 km/h.
When choosing a car, Qin Miao selected Ferrari’s F1 car for the year, the SF90.
Speaking of Ferrari cars, one couldn’t ignore their unique naming methods for race cars.
Unlike other teams, whose naming conventions for new-season cars follow patterns, Ferrari’s seem as if drawn by a random dice roll, without any pattern, frustrating many Ferrari fans with OCD.
The defending driver and Qin Miao both chose Ferrari cars, even the same Leclerc No. 16 car.
The other two, clearly locals of Britain, chose Mercedes, driving Hamilton’s No. 44 car.
