How To End This Marriage-Chapter 134: Shattered Trust
"Ha, should I show this letter to everyone and reveal your true intentions?" I said, attempting to force her into admitting the entire truth. Instead of stepping forward to snatch the letter, she tried to grab it from my hand.
"Give it back! Can’t you hear?" she demanded, struggling to take the letter.
"No, I can’t. This is proof of the crime you committed, and I won’t let it go like this. I will show it to the duke so that he is aware of your true intentions," I declared, walking toward his study. She pushed me back, causing me to fall on the ground, and the letter crumpled on the floor. I crawled toward the letter, but she pulled me back, preventing me from reaching it.
"Leave me!" I exclaimed and kicked her stomach, attempting to break free and grab the letter. That’s when I heard a voice.
"What the hell is going on here?" the duke spoke.
"Alex, see what the duchess is doing to me. I know she is unhappy with me being here because I came here to marry you, but that doesn’t mean she should hit me," she acted, shedding fake tears.
"Wife," he called to me slowly as I tried to pick up the letter.
"Did you do this?" he asked.
"Duke, listen! I was here to show you—" My voice was cut off.
"Yes, Alex, from the moment she has come, she kept on saying she has something to show. She has something to show you. I don’t know what, but she kept on defaming me on the basis of the letter, the contents of which are still hidden," she said.
"No, Duke! Nothing is hidden! Wait, I will show you the letter. It was clearly written here that the princess has sent an assassin to kill someone. I don’t know whom she’s trying to kill, but her personal maid has sent the letter," I said while unfolding the letter to show him the content. To my shock, there was nothing.
"How is this possible? The content was here. It was clearly written here that the work was done as the princess wished, and there is nothing to fear by the princess, and she can finally marry you," I said, panicking.
"Then where is the content, Duchess? Did I touch the letter? No, right? Then how could you say I have committed a crime of killing someone when I could never even think of killing an insect? Do I look like that person to you? Or the only mistake I have made is to love Alex from childhood dearly that I am being accused like this?" she said, shedding tears.
I rushed to Alex, holding onto his shoulder and said, "Believe me, Duke! What I’m saying is the truth. Why would I lie? Why would I do such things to defame someone of killing a person?" I said, clinging to his arm.
"Because she is here to marry me," he said, leaving me speechless.
"Because she is here to marry me, and you can’t tolerate her. Is that right? Is that what made you behave this way?" he said, once again making me take steps back.
"How could you say something like this?" I uttered in a low tone.
"How could you say I will let my anger take the best of me?" I said again.
"Because anger has made you blind, and you can’t see who is right and who is wrong," he said, looking at me.
"Nothing has made me blind. You are once again choosing the wrong side. Don’t tell me I’m wrong when I did nothing wrong," I shouted this time.
"Just a while ago, you said you were wrong, you didn’t listen to me, but now? What have you changed in just the blink of an eye? Is that what you wanted me to do a while ago? No, right? Or did you want to make a fool out of me, saying you trust me when trust has not a single percent in our life?" I said while crumbling the letter.
"Wife!" he said, trying to reach me, but I didn’t and went to take my maid who had brought the letter. I hurried downstairs while searching for the maid. As I saw her in the kitchen, I pulled her by her hand.
"Madam, where are you taking me?" she asked.
"Don’t ask me too many questions; just come with me!" I said while hurrying once again and made her stand in front of the duke.
"Duke, you didn’t believe me, right? Okay, fine! I have proof this time! She is the one who gave me the letter," I said, making my maid come forward.
"Oh, about the letter! Yes, I did. The letter came for the princess. I don’t know who sent it, as I didn’t open it, nor is it my right. But yes, one letter came," the maid said.
"See? Did you hear? I didn’t lie! This princess has been lying, but no one is believing me," I said.
"You can go now!" I said to my maid.
"H-how could I believe it came for me and not one of your plans?" she said, stuttering.
"Princess, did you inform me beforehand that you are coming here?" I asked, raising my brow.
"N-no!" she stuttered.
"Duke, did you inform me beforehand that you are going to take the princess?" I asked.
"No?" he said.
"Then how would I know and make up a plan to deliver your letter here when I can simply send it to the palace? Did you once again make me look like a fool?" I said in anger.
"Now, did you see the truth? See, right? Then I’m going. I’m no longer going to deal with who she kills or not because here, my own husband doesn’t trust me at all," I said, tearing the letter in front of their faces and starting leaving for my room.
"I shouldn’t have meddled in her affair. She is nothing but a nuisance in my life," I mumbled.
"Wife!" As I walked near my room, he held my hand, just like he used to do. No different. I’m used to it. No different because it has already happened numerous times. No different because he always begs to me but never changes. Yes, I’m used to it.
"Yes, Duke Alexavier Agnes! What can I help you with? Do you need something?" I asked formally.
"Wife, don’t talk to me like this!" he said, his voice breaking.
"I’m talking as usual, Duke. I don’t think there’s a more suitable way for me to talk! Like, do you want me to talk like a maid or behave like the butler or the princess or your mother? Tell me how you want me to be, and I will change myself," I said calmly with a smile.
"I don’t want you to change," he said.
"No, no, how could it be? I may have hurt you badly. How could you say you don’t want me to change? If I don’t change myself, I think it would be a grave mistake on my part. And I couldn’t disappoint the law that bought me from my father, could I?" I said.
"Wife! Don’t behave this way! You are my wife, not a servant," he said.
"No, I’m not your wife. As I said, the contract time has fulfilled, and we are no longer married. I only need to sign the divorce papers once, and then all is done. I don’t need to be here, and you can remarry once again," I said.
"I will send notice to the attorney soon, so no need to worry; everything will be done as quickly as possible," I said while walking inside my room.
"No, you will not do such things. I don’t need a divorce. I don’t need to remarry, and I will trust you, so don’t do such a thing," he said, holding my wrist.
"You will not do such things? How can I believe you will not do such things? How can I? I’m not a fool, Duke. You have changed your decision like a kid changes its nappy. No, you have changed your decision more than that. And you want me to believe? No, I won’t. I have made up my mind. You will soon get the divorce papers, and we will part ways, and please, if you have a little bit of shame, investigate the princess’s crime if you don’t want to hide what she has done," I said and shut the door on his face while turning toward the mirror.
"This has done enough. I will not tolerate anymore. This divorce needs to be done. I can’t be with someone who can’t trust me. But... how could I control this heart of mine that keeps ignoring my wishes as if it no longer belongs to me?" I spoke while my heart clenched tightly.
I fall on the floor while holding onto my broken heart.
