The pair drove into the night and ended up staying at a run-down motel, one that was on the outskirts of a small town. When they asked for a room, the receptionist looked from his women’s magazine and narrowed his eyes suspiciously. With his boots still on the counter, the receptionist placed a pistol beside them, pointing it in their direction, his eyes hardening.

"You’re not one of those supernat’ral creatures?"

Harry gave him an offended look. "We’re trynna hunt ’em down," the rogue said. "Don’t worry, old man. We won’t bring you trouble, just a room for the night, then we’ll be on our way."

Aldric remained impassive and quiet as he watched the man slowly retract his gun, placing it under the counter. "Rates gone up." He pointed his chin at the prices on the board next to them. "These are dang’rous times. Two ’undred each."

Without arguing, Harry pulled out one of those black credit cards with unlimited spending. Aldric gave him a look, and the rogue mind-linked him. "Gift from Aila. We could have stayed in a well-established place, but like this schmuck just said.. dangerous times and all."

Harry didn’t even glance at Aldric as he inputted the pin. Aldric was still trying to overcome how real it was all becoming. The world knew about the supernatural, and they were not too keen on it.

Besides the necessity due to its quick route to the highway, Aldric wasn’t sure why they were staying in such a place. There was definitely better security at a five-star hotel that wouldn’t want any trouble than this place. But he didn’t say anything. He didn’t care for one night.

The pair started to turn away after the man at the reception handed them a key with a red dangling plastic card with the number 51 on it, but the receptionist or possibly the owner of such a run-down establishment, called out behind them, "best be on your way first thing."

Harry waved him down, and they swiftly walked to their assigned room. The rogue had asked for the room furthest away. One was because the receptionist was a little too unhinged for their liking, and two, so they could listen for any potential threats and be ready for an escape if things turned ugly in the night. Hopefully, Harry’s little acting was enough to not seem suspicious.

But a village like the one they’d stopped in didn’t have that many visitors, and that was also dangerous. They all knew each other and others who lived in nearby villages and towns. Harry and Aldric were complete strangers not from around there, and they were a little hostile to outsiders, supernatural creatures or not.

"Don’t you think saying shit like that is only going to rile them up more trying to go ’monster hunter’?" Aldric asked quietly once they were in the room, locking it.

Harry was already drawing the curtains and checking the balcony door before replying, "at the moment, it doesn’t matter. We needed a place to stay, and I’m too shattered to keep driving to another place that might be exactly the same."

"Fair enough."

Fortunately, there was no trouble in the night. Their scarred and tattooed appearance most likely helped with their crazed wannabe hunters’ appearance. The pair left at first light, both a little too anxious to sleep well.

It was strange to act in such a way. They were used to hiding from the hunters, and now it was the whole world. Of course, a pair of lycans could take on a few humans, but the ’not knowing’ of what will happen in the world made this journey more anxiety-ridden than Aldric initially believed it to be so.

It was a good thing Harry did come with him, and he didn’t run in his lycan form back to his mate. There was no doubt if the receptionist thought it was normal to talk about hunting the supernatural down, then it meant there were others out there that were really hunting them. They probably took to the countryside and forests, the places he would have been running through.

On the road again, Aldric patted Harry’s shoulder. "Thanks." He didn’t need to explain further. The rogue knew what he was thankful for.

After another four hours, Aldric was beginning to recognise the roads, and his heart sped. He tried to feel his mate through the bond, but they were still too far away. Still, there were only thirty minutes left until he would return home. Whether Emma greeted him with open arms or a slap, Aldric couldn’t wait to see her and his children.

Noticing Aldric’s sudden straight back and alertness, Harry smiled. Aldric began giving him directions, ones that were shortcuts compared to what the sat nav was telling him to take. Harry released a long breath as the car started to turn the last corner that led down a road through the woods.

Their house was on private land in the middle of the woods. It was perfect for their family, but it wasn’t too far away from the human town nearby. They tended to walk there to collect groceries or go to the local coffee shop. But they liked their privacy.

"Past the trees is our house. It’s nice and peaceful."

Aldric hadn’t been sure if his kids would be able to shift or not. They were only half human and half werewolf. Either way, whether they shifted or not, they had a large front and back garden surrounded by woods and wildlife. Everything he as a werewolf and now lycan preferred.

Aldric was looking to the side where a startled deer was watching the car slowly driving from a nearby tree. He was in awe of it and its elegant beauty, but his brows drew together. Something wasn’t right.

Deer didn’t come near their land. They knew there was already a predator there. They wouldn’t go there either, even with him gone. There was still his family..

The car slowed down even more until it came to a stop, and Aldric heard Harry’s sharp intake of breath. Aldric’s heart started to race again. He didn’t want to look; from Harry’s stiff posture, his increased heart rate and how he stared at Aldric that something was definitely wrong.

Aldric’s eyes snapped forward, and his breaths came out ragged as he ripped the car door open, his eyes straight ahead. Taking a few unstable steps, his surroundings started to blur.

His house.. His family home..

It was burnt down.
