Chapter 779: Chapter 775: Monster in the Car_1

Tang Ye nodded, looking ahead. Compared to the chaotic, messy situation around him, the deeper into the Pingnan Base he went, the more it seemed like he was entering a different world.

"Tell me, did the former base commander, Jin Liudong, disappear without a trace about a month ago?" he asked.

The survivor faltered for a moment then replied, "That is indeed true. Everyone here knows about it. After his disappearance, his son was murdered. You see, there at the wall? The second corpse to the right is Jin Liudong’s eldest son, Jin Wenwu’s body."

Tang Ye glanced over but didn’t pay it much attention. At the moment, he was more concerned with the man surnamed Ning.

"After Jin Liudong disappeared, was the base commander replaced by a man surnamed Ning?"

"Indeed, the base commander was replaced, but we’re not sure if his surname is Ning. After all, a month ago, when that man began sending his minions to kill, we all hid in our homes, too terrified to venture out."

Tang Ye nodded. If the information about the change in base commander was true, then it was highly probable that his surname was Ning.

"Does the base commander have a daughter?"

"A daughter? He may have one, but I’m not certain," replied the survivor uncertainly.

"Have you seen her?"

"The base commander passed by here a few days ago, accompanied by a young girl. We have no way of knowing if she’s his daughter, but judging by her age and appearance, it’s likely that she is..."

"It’s likely that she is..." Tang Ye felt a spark of hope and hurriedly asked, "Do you remember what she looks like?"

The survivor hesitated, uncertain how to answer. He didn’t have the right words to describe someone’s appearance. About all he could manage was, "Er, you see, sir, I’m not sure how to articulate it. She’s quite attractive, though, and she seemed to enjoy smiling a lot."

Tang Ye’s gaze moved into the distance, but he was not staring at anything in particular. He ordered in a soft voice, "Take me to your base commander. I have business with him."

"Seek out our base commander? But I..."

"Enough. Just lead us to his residence, and you can go."

"Alright."

Even against his better judgment, the survivor couldn’t defy Tang Ye’s wishes. He adjusted his garments and motionlessly led Tang Ye and his companions to the heart of the Pingnan Base.

The further they proceeded, the more Tang Ye realized he had underestimated the utter chaos of the Pingnan Base. Parts of the slums took up nearly three-quarters of the total territory, with its filthy streets littered with mixtures of various substances.

Under the lead of the survivor, it wasn’t clear how long they had walked when they gradually came upon buildings made of steel and cement. It was then they saw a heavily modified military truck not too far away.

With the appearance of the truck, the surrounding atmosphere became odd. Droves of survivors emerged from their makeshift homes, scrambling towards the vehicle. Even the survivor with Tang Ye seemed tempted but decided against it after glancing at the group.

Tang Ye was puzzled, and he halted in his step to ask, "What is going on?"

"Sir, you must be new here, not knowing about some situations. I can’t explain it clearly now. You’ll see for yourself soon enough."

The survivor wore an enigmatic expression, his eyes flashing with sorrow. The longer one lived in the chaotic Pingnan Base, the more one longed for the days before the Apocalypse.

Compared to the current situation, life back then was paradise in contrast!

Tang Ye refrained from questioning further. He silently stood behind the truck, observing the crowd as their numbers grew to surpass a hundred. Oddly enough, they all desperately crowded towards the front of the truck, anxiety and desperation written clearly on their faces.

Some even came to blows, their faces bloody from the skirmish.

"Make way for me!"

"Get out of the way!"

"Dare to push me and I’ll kill you!"

The scene was in total disorder. Nonetheless, the chaos did not end there. More survivors in the back rushed forward, crowding near the front of the truck. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"So this is..." The interesting turn of events sparked curiosity in Tang Ye’s eyes. He stood by, quietly observing the wild scramble amongst the survivors.

Seemingly when the time was right, the owner of the military truck finally appeared. She was an extraordinarily beautiful woman in her early twenties, clad in a long black lace gown, with a distinct air of nobility inherent in her features.

As she surfaced on top of the truck, soldiers below began lifting crates of unknown contents. The sight of these crates excited the survivors. Soon enough, the crates were opened revealing them to be filled with food.

"At least someone is doing a good deed, the woman seems to have a kind heart."

Tang Ye chuckled lightly, preparing to leave when the survivor beside him uttered strange words.

"Sir, you aren’t aware of this, are you? In these times, there aren’t any benevolent people. Don’t be fooled by the woman’s appearance. After living through the Apocalypse, there’s hardly anyone who can stay sane."

"Oh? You mean...?" Tang Ye’s movements abruptly halted. He squinted at the woman, curious to see her following moves.

"Is everyone ready?" called out the woman on the truck, a sinister smile on her face.

"We are ready!" The survivors below echoed back, their eyes manic in anticipation of the woman’s next move.

Upon hearing their response, the woman gleefully grabbed a crate, scattering all its contents in front of her.

Crate after crate, food was flung into the air. However, the food was only thrown towards the direction in front of the truck. She didn’t even spare a glance at the survivors on the other three sides.

What was even more peculiar was, instead of thanking the woman, the survivors who received food immediately tried to push their way through the crowd in order to leave. Every single person was doing the same.

Finally, all the food had been tossed, and the remaining empty crates were casually tossed aside by the woman. She chuckled, "Alright, everyone, let the game begin!"

The woman’s words sent shivers down the survivors near the front of the truck. Fear was written all over their faces. Before they could make their escape, she dived back into the truck. Suddenly, with a loud crash, a hatch at the front of the highly modified truck busted open!

Crash! Squeal!

The sound of chains dragging echoed as the front hood of the truck flung open. An enormous genetically mutated beast emerged from inside. Collared and chained, it managed to pull the truck with ease!

Roar!

The beast let out a deafening roar. A putrid smell of blood wafting from its mouth. When the beast’s entire body came out from the truck, it was only about the size of a motorcycle. Even though it was small compared to other mutated creatures, its strength was incredible as it easily pulled the whole truck, charging towards the survivors at the front!
