I am the Zombie King of the Apocalyptic World-Chapter 780 - 776: Am I the Base Commander?_1
Chapter 780: Chapter 776: Am I the Base Commander?_1
The exaggerated military vehicle was being pulled into a drift by the evolutionary beast in front, a gleeful voice resonating from the woman inside.
The evolutionary beast opened its bloody maw wide, its purple-glowing fur blowing in the wind, and its sharp claws ripped into the clothes of one survivor after another, leaving horrific wounds on their bodies.
Finally, it pinned a survivor to the ground, its maw oozing with the scent of iron, the merciless bite claimed the survivor’s neck, blood sprayed in all directions.
"Run!"
"Move! Move!"
"I don’t want to die! Don’t trample over me! ...Ahh!"
Immediately, the field was filled with the screams of the survivors, one by one they fell in front of the ferocious evolutionary beast, their flesh brutally torn apart to reveal bloody tissue.
Blood flowed, flesh flew, the stench of blood grew denser in the air. As if noticing this, the woman inside the vehicle became more and more excited, exuding a deranged ecstasy.
The more Tang Ye watched, the more his brows furrowed. Finally, he turned to the survivor guiding them and asked, "Who is the woman inside? She isn’t the base commander’s daughter, is she?"
"Oh... well, she isn’t. This woman is from the United District, I think she’s the daughter of a big shot there. I don’t know her name but think her surname is Yang..."
"Yang..." Tang Ye shook his head. Among the seven committee members in the United District, there was none with the surname Yang. She was likely the daughter of a military force commander.
"There are seven committee members in the United District, and none of them are named Yang. This woman, she’s not as important as she seems," Tang Ye said offhandedly. The accompanying survivor responded with admiration: "No wonder you’re well-informed—common people like us wouldn’t know these things."
"She does this every day?" Tang Ye asked.
"Not exactly, she does it every few days. She keeps a malicious beast and feeds it people when it’s hungry. But she gives us food every time. It’s best to get it and stay alive. If we can’t get to the food and die in the beast’s mouth, it’s totally not worth it."
"So that’s it. We all know that trying to get the food can get us killed, but we still scramble for it. If we’re lucky, we get to eat our fill. As for this base, the food is all hard-earned."
Tang Ye nodded, his gaze scanned the area again. Some survivors were still cramming food into their mouths even when they were knocked down by the ruthless evolutionary beast—it was clear they intended to die with a full stomach.
"Enough, there’s nothing good to watch here. Take us to the base commander."
"Sure...but sir, why are you looking for our base commander?"
"I need to ask him about someone."
Tang Ye cast a deep glance at the military vehicle, looking at the ecstatic face of the woman inside through the glass.
Ah Fu huffed coldly by his side. A wave of energy emanated from his body, oppressing the evolutionary beast currently devouring the survivors.
Woo~
The previously ferocious beast seemed to be startled by something, its body softened and it dropped to the ground on all fours. It crouched there, letting out a low whimper while fear flitted across its eyes.
The woman inside the vehicle was puzzled, she leaned out of the window and asked cautiously, "What’s wrong with you?"
But the beast didn’t answer her. It lay limp on the ground, unmoving.
Tang Ye and his group paid them no attention, continuing on their way towards the center of Pingnan Base.
"Sir, you can see that building over there, right? The current base commander lives there," the guide noted.
As they moved further along, the disorderly huts became fewer, replaced by more concrete buildings and less trash on the ground. However, the chaos was unmitigated. Dominant evolved humans would resort to killing over slight disputes.
Where they were headed, a shiny, spiraling high-rise came into view, clearly not a place where ordinary people lived.
Tang Ye noticed that the face of the survivor accompanying them changed slightly. "Alright, this is far enough. You can go back now," he said.
"Thank you... Thank you!" The survivor quickly expressed his gratitude, turning to leave as if escaping.
After the survivor left, Tang Ye’s expression became increasingly strange. He seemed to be speaking to someone when he eerily said, "Since there’s no order here, let’s not hold ourselves back. Right, Ah Fu?"
After hearing his name, Ah Fu knew exactly what Tang Ye meant. He let out a cold, mocking laugh and moved forward to block an incoming vehicle.
The vehicle screeched to a stop, a man in a leather jacket and sunglasses leaned out of the front window, yelling angrily, "Fool, are you suicidal? Daring to stop me?"
"Let’s see who’s the suicidal one," chuckled Ah Fu.
Ah Fu took a step forward, yanked open the car door, and hauled the man out. The man was tossed away like a powerless rabbit by Ah Fu, flying tens of meters away. Fortunately, he was an evolved human; if he had been an ordinary person, he would have been in grave danger.
Without sparing a second look at the leather-clad man, Tang Ye and his group got into the vehicle and drove at top speed toward the spiraling building.
Soldiers in casual clothes appeared on the road around them. Noticing the speed of their vehicle, they shouted for them to stop.
Yet Tang Ye and his companions disregarded them. Whenever anyone blocked their way, they simply crashed through. Some soldiers wanted to shoot, but by the time they disengaged their safeties, Tang Ye and his group were well out of range.
It wasn’t until they were about a hundred meters away from the spiraling building that Tang Ye started to slow down. Part of the reason was for Ning Yu’er’s sake, but more importantly, there was a man standing in their path.
The man stood there as if he had been waiting for a long time, a smile plastered onto his face. While middle-aged, one could still discern the handsome features he had in his youth.
Bizarrely, even though his face looked normal, it instilled an inexplicable fear in others, as if he weren’t human.
After a brief reflection, Tang Ye realized this was the uncanny valley effect. People fear things that look human but are slightly off, more than hideous monsters. These faces always seem twisted, like dolls.
"Welcome, far-traveled guests. My sincerest apologies for not meeting you earlier—welcome to Pingnan Base."
Tang Ye alighted from the car, his brow knitted as he looked at the man in the distance. He bowed respectfully and said, "But, I don’t see anyone else around. Are you referring to me as the base commander?"
"Who else could I be referring to?" The man laughed, though his expression seemed stiff, as though he was a humanoid robot programmed to smile.
"I’m the base commander? Why? Isn’t it you?" Tang Ye asked.
