Chapter 128: Most Likely Beyond Saving

Ye Qianning’s high fever had come on suddenly, and by nightfall, it still hadn’t broken. Seeing this, the imperial physicians could only shake their heads. In their minds, a situation like this was beyond the help of medicine.

’It would be completely useless. The child isn’t going to make it.’

Of course, they didn’t have the guts to say this out loud. One look at the General told them he was ready to kill someone.

Xiang Minghou refused to leave her side. His eyes were bloodshot. Wiping her palms and the soles of her feet with alcohol had no effect at all. ’How can the fever-reducing medicine I forced down her throat be useless?’

Zhan Chi had all but dragged his father to Lou Mountain to personally treat Ye Qianning.

When the imperial physicians standing outside the door saw Old Master Zhan arrive, they felt as if their pillar of support had arrived. They hurried forward and quietly explained the current situation to him.

The day before, Old Master Zhan had been utterly shocked when his son told him about the Two-Phase Symbiote. Everyone under heaven was searching for the place where it grew; its sudden appearance was bound to attract probing from all sides.

He knew then that the Xiang family’s little girl was in for a rough time. He just hadn’t expected her to fall ill from fright after only a single day. ’Children are so fragile, so easily frightened.’

He didn’t want to get involved in this, but he had no idea what had possessed his own rascally son.

He hadn’t seen his son cry even once since he’d become a man, and this was the first time he’d ever seen him weep so sorrowfully. ’Why does he care so much about the Xiang family’s child!’

"Dad, don’t listen to these quacks. Hurry up, she’s burning with fever." Zhan Chi grew anxious as his father lingered at the door without going in.

The imperial physicians bristled at the insult but didn’t dare to argue back. ’What can you do when someone is born so privileged?’

Old Master Zhan was not pleased. He shot his son a sidelong glare. "Hurry me again, and I’m not going. We’re going home!"

"Alright, alright, I won’t rush you. But Dad, please hurry up."

"..."

Old Master Zhan hmphed and walked into the room, his hands clasped behind his back.

Inside the room, Xiang Minghou sat by the bed, his gaze fixed unblinkingly on the small figure lying there. Even seen from behind, he seemed to have aged several years.

Dean Chen also hadn’t left her side, his heart in his mouth the entire time.

He was an old man and had seen many things, but this high fever showed no sign of breaking after a full day.

At first, the child had been delirious, but then she sank into a deep sleep from which she wouldn’t wake. The situation was looking very grim.

"Dean Chen." Old Master Zhan clasped his hands in a salute as he entered.

"Zhan Yi, what are you doing here?" Dean Chen asked, standing up from his chair. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"I heard General Xiang’s daughter has a persistent high fever. I once studied some medicine with Divine Doctor Sima, so I came to have a look," Old Master Zhan said.

Zhan Chi gave his father an impatient push. "Dad, just go take a look already."

A glimmer of hope appeared in Dean Chen’s eyes. He said hurriedly, "Quick, go take a look at my little disciple."

Old Master Zhan shot Zhan Chi a disgruntled glare before finally walking to the bedside. The chubby little girl on the bed had her eyes closed and was breathing rapidly. A single glance was enough to give him a shock.

’This child...’

"General Xiang, if you would step aside. The child’s fever is severe, and I need to check her pulse," Old Master Zhan said softly.

Xiang Minghou turned his head, his eyes a frightening shade of red. He shifted to make room, saying nothing.

Old Master Zhan sat down and placed his fingers on Ye Qianning’s pulse point.

After a long moment, he reached out and gently pried open her eyes to examine them. She was burning hot; her skin felt scalding to the touch.

’A normal child who ran a fever like this for a whole day would likely wake up an imbecile, if they woke up at all. The child before him was already in a semi-conscious state.’

’The imperial physicians’ report had been accurate. A fever that hadn’t broken for a full day and night, leading to a coma... a child in this state was most likely beyond saving.’

Old Master Zhan carefully studied Ye Qianning’s small face. Though this was the first time he had ever seen the child, he felt an inexplicable sense of kinship toward her. Seeing her in this state, a pang of sorrow pricked his heart.
