Chapter 141: The Four Families Gather at Lou Mountain

"Well, well. Elder Gu, Brother Zhan, and the young man from the Xiang family. You’re all here," Qian Fu said, approaching with his son, Qian Fanji.

Elder Gu and Zhan Yi looked over, both quite surprised. Qian Fu had returned to the Capital City as well. The pull of the Intergenerating Duality was truly powerful.

"Prime Minister Qian, didn’t you go to Lishan Mountain to cultivate your spirit as a layman? What brings you back to the Capital City so suddenly?" It had been many years since Elder Gu had last seen Qian Fu.

"You’re too kind, Elder Gu. I resigned from my post as prime minister many years ago, so it’s not quite appropriate to call me that anymore," Qian Fu said with a smile.

"Everyone in all of Beili knows of your accomplishments, Prime Minister Qian. Even though you’ve resigned, in the eyes of the people, you are still the prime minister. You are irreplaceable." Elder Gu genuinely admired this younger man.

Qian Fu offered a humble smile.

"Qian, my friend, that’s low of you! You came back to the Capital City and didn’t even look me up for a drink?" Zhan Yi was overjoyed to see him. By his count, it had been more than a decade.

"Though I only practice as a layman, I still can’t break the monastic rules. If Brother Zhan wants a drink, I’m sure any of these young people could hold their liquor. You’re hardly lacking for drinking partners," Qian Fu said with a laugh.

"Drink with the youngsters? Don’t make me laugh," Zhan Yi scoffed.

"Why’s that?"

"You’ve been away practicing for years, so you don’t know what’s happened in the Capital City. For some reason, the children from our families had a major falling out long ago. Now, whenever they meet, they glare at each other like mortal enemies. You want me to drink with them? Hah! We’d have an easier time drinking from daggers!" Zhan Yi knew about the incident in Nanyuan involving Xiang Minghou and his own son.

However, that day, Zhan Chi had been trying to save face and had only mentioned himself and Xiang Minghou, conveniently leaving out the fact that Qian Fanji and Gu Shuo had also been involved!

Just as Zhan Yi finished speaking, Gu Shuo happened to be walking past. He overheard the comment and stopped in his tracks, his eyes darting toward Xiang Minghou.

Upon hearing this, Qian Fu glanced back at his son, then looked toward Xiang Minghou, and finally over to Gu Shuo, who was standing nearby. The expressions on all the young men’s faces were grim.

’He really hadn’t heard about this. He remembered that when he resigned from his post, these boys were only eleven or twelve. They were thick as thieves back then. How could they have had such a falling out?’

Elder Gu glanced around at the young men and realized it was true.

He hadn’t paid it any mind before, but now that it was mentioned, his curiosity was piqued. ’What on earth happened to drive a wedge between these children?’

The older generation was quite puzzled.

The younger generation, however, knew exactly what had happened. ’Still,’ they thought, ’if not for that incident all those years ago, Ye Qianning would never have entered the picture.’

At this thought, the past suddenly didn’t seem so bitter.

"Dean Chen is here."

Someone in the crowd called out.

Everyone was pulled from their thoughts and looked off into the distance.

Dean Chen approached at a leisurely pace, holding a chubby little child dressed in a disciple’s uniform. The child was so beautiful that it was impossible to look away after just one glance.

When Xiang Minghou saw Ye Qianning, his eyes lit up, and he immediately started walking over.

Elder Gu was even more overjoyed. ’It’s been several days since I’ve seen the little one,’ he thought. ’If I don’t go say hello, she’ll forget all about me!’

Zhan Yi was still mesmerized by the cute little face of the girl he already thought of as his granddaughter. Seeing everyone else go over, he refused to be left behind and broke into a little jog.

"It seems these gentlemen aren’t interested in the Intergenerating Duality, but in the child in the Dean’s arms," Qian Fu observed. He turned his head and saw his own son was also looking that way, and his expression faltered. ’That look in his son’s eyes...’

"Father, after you," Qian Fanji said, turning back to him.

Seeing this, Qian Fu chuckled and started walking forward.

’It seems there’s more to that child in the Dean’s arms than meets the eye.’

’He hadn’t been back to the Capital City in years, but today, it seemed things were far more interesting than when he’d left.’
