I Became the Mother of His Child-Chapter 512: Rather Opinionated
Song Chenxi had always been rather opinionated since she was young, but she had never done anything rebellious. Even though her family indulged her, Xu Xiuxiu had never expected that the young girl would act so rashly and rebelliously on such a major life event, even conspiring with Zhao Nan to steal the household registration booklet and identity cards in a hurry to obtain a marriage certificate.
"Honey." Song Chenxi adapted very well, and just as she and Zhao Nan had left the Civil Affairs Bureau, she held the red booklet and looked up at him with coquettish eyes, saying, "In just a few days, I went from a single dog who's never dated to a married woman, it's quite a unique feeling indeed."
Zhao Nan, hearing this, looked down at Song Chenxi with a gentle smile.
"Good girl." Although every fiber of his being was tingled by the young girl's calling him 'honey,' Zhao Nan began to feel calm inside. He thought that since they had already gotten married, it was time to go see Aunt Xu Xiuxiu and the Father-in-law.
"Are mom and dad at home?" Zhao Nan asked softly as he helped Song Chenxi tidy her hair.
"Huh?" At first, Song Chenxi didn't understand who Zhao Nan meant by 'mom and dad,' but then she realized and her cheeks flushed instantly. She spoke with a touch of awkwardness, "Yes! Grandpa hasn't been feeling well lately, and they went back to the old home. They just returned to the Imperial City today." Song Chenxi thought about how she had sneaked home to steal the household registration booklet and identity card without Xu Xiuxiu and Song Yuanhuan noticing, and felt thrilled.
Doing something bad right under one's parents' noses felt exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time.
"Then it's perfect, let's go back now and meet them." To get the marriage certificate, Song Chenxi had also boldly skipped class that afternoon. Always a good student, she found skipping class a novel experience. She felt that as long as she was with Zhao Nan, she dared to do anything outrageous without any hesitation—as if she knew that whatever happened, this man could resolve it reliably.
"Now?" Song Chenxi instinctively felt surprise and worry.
Were they going to meet the future in-laws so soon?
"Yes, now." Zhao Nan spoke assertively, but he felt a deep sense of guilt towards Song Chenxi. If it weren't for the fact that he wouldn't have much time later, he would not rush things like this. However, no matter what, since he had led her into doing something rebellious, he was ready to face all the consequences without fear.
"What if my dad wants to hit you?" Don't let his age fool you; he was actually in very sound health—a solid middle-aged man.
"He won't." Zhao Nan confidently replied to Song Chenxi, but in reality, he wasn't so sure since he had whisked away their precious daughter without prior notice. He figured the father-in-law probably had half a mind to chop him up.
"Okay then! Let's go home to see mom and dad." Song Chenxi nodded, looping her arms through Zhao Nan's.
Xu Xiuxiu and Song Yuanhuan had just returned to the Imperial City from their home town. Father Song's health had somewhat improved these days, but with old age, he still lay in bed requiring Mrs. Song's care. Xu Xiuxiu and Song Yuanhuan had planned to stay in their hometown for a few more days, but since both of their sons were away at military academy all year round and only their daughter came home occasionally on weekends, Mrs. Song was aware of this. Once Father Song was feeling a bit better, she hurried them back to the Imperial City.
Because Song Yuanhuan was a military man and valued privacy, most of the household chores were shared among the family members, so they didn't employ a maid; they only occasionally had a part-time cleaner come to tidy up.
"Mom, Dad, I'm back," Song Chenxi opened the door to her home, made a gesture to Zhao Nan, then called out to the inside of the house.
"I'm back?" Xu Xiuxiu was initially puzzled. Wasn't this girl supposed to be in class today? Plus, she had already come back once at noon to get some book, why had she returned again so soon?
Of course, Xu Xiuxiu would never have imagined that her daughter was coming back home to get her household registration book to apply for a marriage certificate. If she had known, Xu Xiuxiu would have been on guard. The matter was that the girl didn't even give a prelude and the speed of the developments was too fast. For parents of a child who had always been obedient and trouble-free, who would have thought that their own child could do something so reckless.
"Mm! I brought someone back with me," Song Chenxi replied, then appeared holding Zhao Nan's hand.
"Aunt Xiuxiu," Zhao Nan looked at the still-young Xu Xiuxiu, whom he had met several years ago, and smilingly called her 'aunt.' In fact, he had wanted to call her 'Mother-in-law,' but things had moved so fast, he thought it best to give them some time to adjust.
"Zhao Nan," Xu Xiuxiu looked with some surprise at the visitor, and her eyes, tainted with a hint of the passage of time, came to rest on the hands of Zhao Nan and Song Chenxi where they were joined. Xu Xiuxiu, having seen much of life's major and minor events, quickly regained her composure after her initial shock.
"Come on over and sit down," Xu Xiuxiu gestured to the two, then turned around to call out Song Yuanhuan, who had been sent to the kitchen to clean.
"What is it?" Song Yuanhuan asked, wearing simple casual clothes and with his sleeves rolled up, he didn't seem at all out of place doing household chores. As time and the years settled, although Song Yuanhuan's manner before Xu Xiuxiu remained the same day after day, the commanding pressure of a superior officer on him was very profound.
Zhao Nan had felt intimidated by Song Yuanhuan since he was a child, and now that Song Yuanhuan had become a general, his presence had grown even more formidable. Zhao Nan instinctively felt that he was definitely in for a tough battle today with his future father-in-law.
"You said you two got married?" Song Yuanhuan and Xu Xiuxiu both sat on the sofa, looking at Zhao Nan and Song Chenxi sitting opposite them, then asked Zhao Nan emotionlessly, his penetrating gaze giving nothing away.
"Here's the marriage certificate," Zhao Nan steeled himself as he replied, and at the same time placed a pair of red booklets on the rosewood coffee table in front of the sofa.
"Today?" Song Yuanhuan picked up the red booklet and glanced at it, seeing the date, "You took your household registration book and identity card before, right? Song Chenxi!?" Song Yuanhuan's voice lacked any visible fluctuation; truth be told, if Song Yuanhuan were a powder keg, then only Xu Xiuxiu and Song Chenxi had the power to douse its fuse, but at this moment, the one igniting the powder keg was Song Chenxi herself, a situation blown way out of proportion.
And to think that the cabbage you've grown yourself gets bulldozed by a wild boar, imagine the feeling.
"Dad…" Faced with such a calmly asking Song Yuanhuan, Song Chenxi had a moment of not knowing what to do, and it was at this moment that she suddenly realized how impulsive she had been. She should have discussed it, even a word with her parents would have been good. Why did she just whimsically go and get married without saying anything?
"Slap—" Song Yuanhuan slapped the two red booklets down on the coffee table; the force was evident from the sound of the vibration on the coffee table, "Get out," Song Yuanhuan exploded as he glared at Zhao Nan.
