I Became the Villainess, But My Beast Husbands Can Hear My Mind?!-Chapter 119: On the Road to the North (2)
[Damn you, bugs...] Roxanna complained in her heart when she felt a caterpillar crawling on her leg. [I really wish I could turn into a fox and let my husbands carry me.]
"Are you tired, Roxanna?" Cyrus suddenly asked. "You can turn into a fox. I’ll carry you."
Roxanna was about to nod, but then she suddenly stopped as she thought about something.
[All this time, I thought it was just a coincidence... but they always know what I want right after I think about it.]
[They even know when I’m talking to the system in my head!]
Roxanna lowered her head as she thought more deeply, then slowly raised it when she noticed Cyrus and Luan holding their breath.
"How do you know I often talk to the voice in my head?" she asked.
Earlier, the only thing she had been thinking about was how to save Calen. But now that her mind had cleared, she could finally think about other things.
Luan and Cyrus exchanged glances, as if urging each other to answer her.
After a moment, Cyrus finally spoke. "Sometimes... we see you talking to yourself," he admitted. "So we thought you were talking to something inside your mind. Maybe... some kind of divine being that we can’t hear."
Roxanna widened her eyes because she didn’t expect that she talked to the system out loud so much.
All this time, she only spoke out loud when she was sure no one was around.
Honestly, she rarely did it. However, Cyrus still noticed it and used it to lied to her, even if it only happened a few times.
"How can you come to that conclusion?" Roxanna asked, still half-doubting his words. "If I saw someone talking to themselves, I’d probably think they were crazy."
"Crazy?" Luan laughed softly. "Oh, how cute. You wouldn’t think that way if you saw real crazy beasts out there, especially the ones that have completely gone feral." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Roxanna was about to say something to argue against Luan’s words, but he was right. Feral beastkins could be so wild and dangerous that talking to yourself really couldn’t be compared to them at all.
"Besides..." Luan continued, "we know that some beasts can really talk to divine beings. You know... like great shamans and people like that."
To be honest, Luan didn’t really believe in those things. All this time, he had thought that most shamans were just pretending. They acted like they could hear divine beings so people would respect them, praise them, and give them good food and nice places to live.
Still...
If Roxanna suddenly said she could hear a divine being, he would believe her without even thinking twice.
"Oh... I see." Roxanna pressed her lips together lightly. "I thought you could hear my thoughts."
The moment she said that, Cyrus and Luan felt cold sweat run down their backs. They quickly looked at each other because they really didn’t want Roxanna to know that secret, at least, not yet.
[Yeah... maybe it really is just a coincidence,] Roxanna thought to herself [Maybe that’s what people call mate bonds!]
She nodded slightly, convincing herself. Just like how a mother can feel when her child is in danger, maybe mate bonds worked the same way.
[It would be so scary if they could read my mind...] she thought shyly. [I think about so many bad things. They’d probably hate me if they knew.]
Luan and Cyrus frowned at the same time. What bad things?
Most of the thoughts in Roxanna’s head were full of sunshine and rainbows. She was adorable on the outside and even more adorable on the inside.
Sometimes, they even wished she would think more about punishing people who tried to hurt her, so they wouldn’t have to hold back.
"That’s impossible," Luan said with a small laugh. "How could someone read another person’s mind? Only a truly great shaman might be able to do something like that."
Roxanna laughed along with him. "Yeah, you’re right. That’s impossible."
To distract Roxanna from thinking about that kind of thing, Cyrus quickly changed the topic. "So..." he said casually, "are you tired? Like I said before, if you turn into a little fox, I can carry you."
Before Roxanna could say anything, Luan spoke up, "...Wait." He added, "I think I hear water."
He turned his head slightly, focusing on the sound. "Maybe there’s a spring nearby," Luan continued. "We can rest there for a while. And who knows? We might even find some wild horses."
They had been walking for at least four hours, and the bugs crawling on her legs had completely ruined her mood. Because of that, Roxanna immediately nodded.
"Alright, let’s go there."
She really didn’t want to deal with those insects anymore. If resting for a while meant fewer bugs, she was more than happy to agree.
Luan led the way, following the faint sound of water. The further they walked, the clearer the sound became. Soon, they could hear it clearly.
Splash... splash...
A small stream flowed gently between rocks and tall grass. Moonlight reflected on the surface, making the water look like silver.
"We found it," Cyrus said with a smile.
Roxanna let out a relieved sigh. "Finally..."
She walked toward the water and carefully washed her feet, trying to get rid of any dirt and bugs. "Ugh... this feels so much better," she murmured.
Cyrus sat down on a nearby rock and stretched his arms. "Let’s rest here for a bit."
Luan nodded. "We’ll stay alert. This place is safe for now."
Roxanna sat between them, feeling her tired body slowly relax. For the first time in hours, she felt truly comfortable.
A few moments later, Roxanna’s fox ears suddenly twitched because she had heard something. It sounded like footsteps, like an animal moving carefully through the grass.
She slowly turned her head toward Luan, her eyes shining with excitement. "Do you think..." she whispered with a small smile, "are there horses coming this way?"
