I Became the Villainess, But My Beast Husbands Can Hear My Mind?!-Chapter 142: Meeting Mr. Reindeer (2)
The leader looked at them for a moment before speaking again. "After living in these mountains for so many years, this is the first time we’ve ever seen climbers who care for each other as deeply as you do."
Roxanna was speechless. She even looked away for a moment because she felt embarrassed by such high praise.
"That’s just because... we’re husband and wife, so of course we help each other," Roxanna said as she scratched her temple, even though it wasn’t itchy. "I don’t think something like that is a big achievement."
"Oh, Miss Fox, you have no idea how many times we’ve seen people abandon their own allies or even their spouses when they’re in dangerous situations," he said. "And usually, when those people are left alone, they don’t survive for very long. After all, we really can’t live alone in such extreme places."
"But that’s exactly why we brought you here," the leader added. "We can see that none of you have bad intentions toward us. We’ve seen many cold and cruel eyes before, and yours are not like that."
Then, the leader of the Golden Tribe turned his gaze toward Luan. "Maybe one of you isn’t completely innocent," he said with a faint smile, "but at least I know you can keep him in check."
Roxanna followed his gaze and quickly defended Luan. "Please don’t misunderstand him, Mr. Reindeer! He may look scary, but this husband of mine is really just a sweet cat!"
The leader of the Golden Tribe looked at Roxanna with disbelief, so she quickly added, "I’m telling the truth! My husband is really sweet!"
Honestly, Roxanna herself had some doubts about how sweet her husband really was, especially since even the Black Fang Tribe seemed afraid whenever they saw Luan.
[Still, as long as he won’t hurt me, my Luan will always be a sweet cat in my eyes!]
"I promise, we truly didn’t come here to hurt you, or... or to take your blood for eternal life!" Roxanna said in a rush. Then she froze and covered her mouth.
[Shit! Shit! Shit! Why did I mention the blood part? That just made them more suspicious!]
[I’m the leader of the Vixeria Tribe, so I shouldn’t ruin our political ties so soon!]
She really needed to work on her way of speaking. If she wanted to build strong ties with other tribes, she had to rely on her words. She had even formed a bond with the Black Fang Tribe with the help of her husbands.
[If I keep messing up like this, I’ll become a useless leader and disappoint my husbands.]
In fact, her husbands didn’t care that much about it.
Even if she couldn’t become a good leader and people decided to abandon her, they wouldn’t mind.
But they knew that Roxanna would never want that to happen.
"That is just a legend we’ve heard since long ago," Cyrus finally said as he stood up and walked toward Roxanna. "People say your blood can make someone live forever. But whether it’s true or not, we don’t care."
"As I said from the start, we came here to ask for your help," he continued calmly. "Our dear friend is dying, and we believe you are our only hope to save him."
Cyrus spoke clearly and smoothly, as if talking like this was natural for him.
To be honest Roxanna wasn’t surprised. Besides Zeir, Cyrus had always been wise and dependable when it came to speaking and handling people.
"Mr. Bird, I understand what you’re trying to say," the leader replied in a firm but calm voice. "But as I’ve already told you before, we can’t leave this mountain so easily. This place is the only home that can protect us from people who want to steal our blood."
If that was true, then the legend about the deer tribe’s blood might not be just a rumor.
However, maybe it only applied to the reindeer beastkins who lived on Golden Mountain.
If all deer and reindeer beastkins’ blood could really make people immortal, then there would surely be many immortal beastkins in this world.
"Mr. Reindeer, who says this is the only place where you can live safely?" Luan spoke in a confident voice. "As long as you’re with us, I promise that nothing bad will happen to you or to anyone who chooses to follow us back to our tribe."
His words sounded confident and sincere, but words were always easier than real actions.
Roxanna knew that the leader of the Golden Tribe would not believe him so easily. After all, promises alone were not enough to protect lives.
Trust had to be built with time, not just with brave words.
However, they didn’t have much time to slowly build deep trust with the reindeer beastkins. Calen needed the deer doctor as soon as possible, and every moment mattered.
She also knew that she wouldn’t be able to finish the system’s side mission if she failed to bring the doctor back to her tribe.
But was that mission really more important than Calen’s life?
If she could find another way to heal him without taking the doctor away from his home, she would choose that path without hesitation.
[The doctor needs to see Calen in person, Host,] the system reminded her. [Some things can only be understood when the doctor examines the patient directly. And don’t forget the penalty if you fail this mission.]
Roxanna swallowed hard when she remembered that. The system had warned her that if she failed this mission, Calen’s condition would only get worse.
[What should I do...? What should I do...?]
Her thoughts were spinning out of control. Then, suddenly, Cyrus gently held her hand, squeezing it as if to tell her that everything would be okay, and somehow, it really helped.
She took a deep breath and spoke in a calm and respectful tone, "Mr. Reindeer, why don’t we discuss this while sitting down? If you really can’t come with us to our tribe, how about I tell you about the symptoms my sick husband is having?"
