Leaving aside his college years, Noah could, without a doubt, say that he never missed a single day of school in his life. In fact, the very idea was alien to him back then—there were even times when he found school more fun than home.

Well, that was in early middle school maybe, but he never knew the "joy" of skipping school to go to an arcade. He didn't even know where those were located in his hometown for a long time.

Yes, you could have called him a sort of honor student.

That being said, he was as happy as everyone when a teacher didn't come to school or only taught for like five minutes before going on with juicy tales from their youth. He was as annoyed as everyone with that teacher who never missed a class, even when sick, or who gave their teaching hours to another when they couldn't be there.

"..."

Yet, he had never met a teacher who slept before even starting their lecture. Worse still, it was the first time—that he remembered at least—that something like this actually bothered him.

"(Should I wake her up or...?)"

Her face was lying on the little table by the window, his "instructor" was breathing softly, her pink hair spread messily on its surface.

This was quite ironic as she was the one who woke him up in the morning.

———

"Good day, Miss..."

She checked her notepad.

"Vasi... Yeah, Vasilisa. As promised, I have come to teach you."

"Huh..."

At that moment, Noah was a bit at a loss for words. Not only because of the big pieces of wood the maid was effortlessly carrying in one hand, but also because of the massive cart full of food she was dragging.

"Hm? Oh, that? Yeah, I noticed you didn't have a proper learning envi... sigh... that's a table for teaching... no, learning... Anyway, can you let me in now? I can't exactly go through people..."

"Ah... yes..."

He made way for her. The maid proceeded to put down the big plank of dark wood in the middle of the room as well as the cart she was dragging.

"Now, excuse me..."

She went outside a few more times to gather all the pieces of wood she needed, and when she was done with it, she gestured to Noah to come closer.

"Y-Yes?"

"Don't talk," she said in a tired voice. "Ah... No... Just don't... say 'me' for a while... Anyway, we will make the teacher–student ritual now."

Noah raised an eyebrow, "W-Was... uh... Is the... the wood... er... uh... for... that?"

The maid waited for him to finish before answering, "Don't you listen?"

She then fiddled with her pocket for a moment before producing some golden rings. She put one of them on her index, then extended her hand towards Noah as if she was waiting for something. But her student stared at her, his eyebrows furrowed.

"... Your hand."

He did understand that part. What he didn't understand was...

"W-Why?"

"For the ritual."

He also understood that part, but this wasn't answering his question at all!

"Sigh... Look..." She took his hand and put the ring on his index finger, where it fitted perfectly.

She then stopped, her eye wide open.

"Eh~... I expected you to resist but... you were just tense actually..."

Well, how could he not? A girl was putting a ring on his finger! Sure, it wasn't the right finger, but this was still something he wasn't mentally prepared for. He couldn't help but panic and freeze when he understood what was going on.

"!!!"

Wait, not the right finger? Who said it wasn't the right finger? This wasn't his world! What if he let that maid marry him or something?! Did he actually make some sort of big error?! Well, she was sort of beautiful and totally his type if there was something he could call that BUT NO!!! THIS WAS—

"Ah!"

Noah put his hands on his forehead where the maid hit him with a finger flicker just a moment before.

"Now then... You seem to be red. Seems you never received a ring for a single covenant in your whole life? How sad, but that's sheltered noble girls for you..."

"..."

No. Maybe this one wasn't his type after all.

"I am the one who points," she said weakly, pointing towards the roof with her right index finger. She then pointed at Noah, "You are the one who chases what I point towards. For now until times eternal, our fates shall be intertwined."

A gentle light enveloped Noah. Then, a shining golden chain exited the maid's back before entering his body right where he was pierced a few days ago.

"A-Ah! Aaah! ... Huh?"

He yelled at first until he realized there was no pain. Just a great sensation of peace and... boredom.

[Mentor has been defined to Momotarou]

A screen briefly appeared before his eyes.

"(Momotarou? Is that her name?)" he thought. "(So it was just a shortened version...)"

The light finally subsided just like the chain. Everything had returned to normal.

"... It... It is... o... over?"

"Yes."

"... Huh... A... er... About... hm... Muddy—"

"Oh, I spaced out a little..." cut the maid, shaking her head. "You want to ask about Muddy Tongues, right?"

Noah nodded.

"Then let's start our first lesson."

She crouched and touched the pile of wood planks she brought.

"Avgust."

The planks floated into the air before joining together into a perfectly shaped bureau and chair. Noah could only open his mouth in marvel at the scene before him. Magic could really do anything in this world, huh?

The maid moved the table in front of the window and sat in the chair.

"Your breakfast and your dinner are in the cart. Just leave some for me. Oh, and sorry if your food ends up cold... I asked for one of those heat preserving... preserving... yes, I... uh... what was I... saying... oh... cart..."

Before he realized, the maid was already fast asleep, escaping once again her duties as his teacher. Well, he kinda expected something like this. It didn't seem like that maid had any respect for her master or her duty.

"(Well, at least she brought food? Though...)"

He turned to the cart full of food. Too full in fact—was she trying to resupply a regiment or something? There were too many of too many things!

"(Well... at least I don't think I will need to look for leftovers today... maybe?)"

He wasn't sure he could fully believe that maid for now. Wasn't it a bit suspicious that she asked him to eat just before sleeping? What if those things were poisoned?

He wasn't quite against dying a second time, especially considering his life in this manor, but, if possible, he would prefer a less agonizing method than last time.

"(Yeah, I will ask her to taste them when she wakes up.)"

He had made his decision once again. For now, he just needed to keep his hunger in check and not fall to the temptation of those delicious-looking cakes. Yes, he had to stay strong!

"(...She will... wake up soon, right?)"

And so, began Noah's trial of patience.
