Chapter 122: The Only Link To The Culprit

The lord’s manor was obviously very big. It was the biggest building in all of Red Cliff City.

In the guest quarters, Erika and the others can choose a room each, or they can choose to stay with another person if they want to.

With how big the guest quarters were, it would still be able to accommodate all of them even if their numbers doubled.

Miguel, Erika, Gasper, and a bunch of others obviously chose to pick a room each, with the exception of the servants, who decided to stay in a single room.

At this moment, inside the room chosen by Miguel, Erika could be seen sitting in the bed while Miguel sat at the chair right beside a small table along with Edith.

"You will help me find the mastermind, right?" She asked with a determined gaze on his face.

"Of course," Miguel answered truthfully.

After Miguel told her the truth—that it was the Red Family themselves who hired the assassins—Erika finally had a change of heart and decided not to take it lying down.

After Miguel told her all the details, she realized that there was a traitor hidden in the Red Family, and it was this traitor that hired the assassin.

According to the leader of that assassin group, they were actually hired to kill the bandits as well as the hostages and leave no one alive. They don’t know the real identity of the mission issuer, but they do know that they had a Red Family emblem that only direct family members with certain status can possess—much like the emblem that was in Erika’s hand—when they met for the transaction.

Erika was a rising genius of the Red Family; she was given the badge and emblem to recognize her status among the masses. Those who were treated as geniuses could also receive such an emblem.

Like Albert said, the Dark Snake Assassin group’s area of operation was Blazing City, so it could only mean that whoever hired them should still be in the Red Family’s main branch by now.

Erika was dying to know the culprit and their real motives for doing so, but she could only endure for now. She knew that someone capable of hiring the assassin group should not be simple and could not be underestimated.

That was why she asked for Miguel’s help, as she knew that he had already surpassed her by a large margin in terms of strength and even status with the identity he was currently playing.

In exchange, she promised to help Miguel with everything that she could possibly do. She said that she would follow his instructions from now on, no matter what they were.

Regarding that, Miguel merely chuckled and did not take it to heart. He knew how fragile a person’s heart could become, depending on the circumstances.

"Just lay low for now. Do not reveal what you know about the assassin group for now. We still don’t know the real identity of the culprit aside from them being one of the Red Family’s direct descendants," Edith suddenly stated after some thought.

Miguel nodded his head and continued, "Just let them assume that it was still the bandits doing it in order not to alert the culprit."

"With the Red Devils’, we should not have any problem convincing all of them of my strength either. They might even exaggerate it a bit for their own reputation," he added.

Mercenaries knew a lot of ways to earn money. Killing beasts and completing missions were just two of the many money-making activities they knew of. Selling information they know could also earn them a lot of money, depending on the scarcity of the information that they have.

Miguel was now playing as an expert who had just emerged after hundreds of years of seclusion. He wanted to let everyone know, including the Red Family, that he was an expert Summoner who happened to save their younglings during the hostage situation with the bandits and the one who neutralized the assassin group.

This way, all the attention would be directed towards him, while Erika and the others would be marked as safe.

The culprit’s attention would also shift towards him and not towards Erika and the others.

He has an inkling that the reason for hiring the assassin was so that the matter regarding the treasure map would not blow up. They don’t have any direct hatred or enmity towards Erika, and it just so happened that she was one of the hostages taken by the bandits, and the culprit wanted all of them dead to hide the information regarding the treasure map for themselves.

Whoever it was, they should also have a noticeable status in the Red Family, as they were able to gain first-hand information about their general whereabouts a few hours after the bandits were killed.

Miguel suspected that it was the messenger who reported that the bandits were dead after they did not send a reply after their last negotiation failure.

With that in mind, it was obvious that the messenger was their number one link to the culprit hiding behind the scenes.

"First things first, do not let Alderic think that something is wrong with you. Just act like you normally do, and what you did earlier should not be it, considering his reaction," Miguel stated.

Erika nodded in understanding as she adjusted her mentality.

"Lay low and act normal. Got it!" She declared.

"Do not inform Gasper about this thing either. From what I could tell, he seemed to be overly protective of you. Try to capitalize it; that kid’s willpower and loyalty are not to be underestimated either."

The three of them talked about the things they should and should not do for a few moments before Erika left with a calm face.

Before leaving the door, she turned to look at Miguel and then at Edith one last time before closing the door with a sigh.

Edith looked at the door with a smile on her face. "Even though I am not an expert, I can tell that girl is secretly in love with you; don’t you think so too?"
