I Can Extract Divine Power-Chapter 104 - 90: The Sword King’s Gifted Sword, a New Mission
Even if these people hadn’t come, Shen Bai had his own ways to get out of the situation. Their arrival, however, was a show of respect.
Making your way in the Jianghu wasn’t just about fighting and killing; you couldn’t reach the top through violence alone. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Social graces and connections were an integral part of the Jianghu.
Wuhua smiled. "Donor Shen appears to be busy today, so we won’t disturb you. If you have the time, you are always welcome to visit us at Xuanxin Temple."
Cheng Shuang and Lin Yun’s eyes landed on Qin Shuang inside the carriage. They were taken aback, especially after seeing the Token at her waist.
The Observatory.
Those two words surfaced in their minds.
"Come visit the Five Immortals Sect anytime you’re free, Shen Bai."
"The Hundred Medicines Valley would be honored to welcome Mr. Shen at any time to discuss the medical arts."
All three understood the weight of Qin Shuang’s presence. They said no more, simply clasping their hands in a salute before turning to leave.
Before long, the once-bustling street fell silent.
Shen Bai looked back at Qin Shuang and chuckled. "It seems you’re the one with the powerful connections."
Qin Shuang shrugged. "Once you join the Observatory, you’ll be Lord Shen. You’ll be more impressive than me."
"I was about to step in and defuse the situation. I was worried you were getting too bloodthirsty—killing people in Fenglin State would have had unpleasant consequences. I never expected you to have already made arrangements here."
Shen Bai shook his head. "It was merely a coincidence."
’Arrangements? There were no arrangements.’
’It was all just a result of my efforts back in Shengyun County.’
Shen Bai lowered the carriage curtain. "Continue."
The driver was perceptive and knew better than to say more. He simply cracked his whip.
The carriage continued on its way.
...
「Fenglin State.」
「The Observatory.」
"Master Shen, Miss Qin, I’ll be on my way now."
The driver said with a slight bow, then hurriedly drove the carriage back toward Shengyun County.
Shen Bai watched the driver depart before turning to study the tall building before him.
On its classical roof, the tiles were arranged in a picturesque pattern, exuding a serene beauty.
The plaque above the entrance bore two large, flamboyant words: The Observatory.
On the pillars flanking the entrance, two phrases were carved in bas-relief.
The right pillar read: To observe the affairs of past and present.
The left pillar read: To investigate the changes under heaven.
Beyond its classical elegance, the entire building radiated a stern and forbidding aura.
No common folk walked this street, making it seem rather desolate.
At the entrance, two members of the Observatory dressed in black stood guard with solemn expressions.
Their arrival didn’t seem to faze the two guards. They merely gave the pair a once-over before resuming their posts.
"Let’s go."
Qin Shuang stretched, her back arching in a startling curve.
Shen Bai rubbed his chin. "So, this is it? I’ve joined the Observatory?"
Qin Shuang pulled Shen Bai’s arm. "We go in, meet my teacher, and do a simple registration. Then you’re in."
Shen Bai asked curiously, "Is it really that simple?"
’He’d thought that joining the Observatory would involve a more formal process.’
’Just meeting someone and then registering seemed excessively casual.’
Qin Shuang rolled her eyes. "The Observatory’s intelligence network is incredibly thorough. They’ve already investigated your entire past. Any hassles after registration are for the logistics department to handle. We front-line personnel don’t need to deal with such trivial matters."
The Observatory’s various departments were already highly specialized.
Having front-line personnel handle complex procedural matters would just gum up the works.
It was about having dedicated people for specific tasks. What seemed simple on the surface was only because a much more complex process had already been completed before they even arrived.
That included investigating your background, your past deeds, and even digging back a few generations into your family history.
Filing the report after you’re registered is also handled by logistics.
Shen Bai nodded.
"Come on, let’s go get the paperwork done! We’ll be colleagues after this!"
With the explanation finished, Qin Shuang grabbed Shen Bai’s arm in a very unladylike fashion and eagerly pulled him inside.
...
Inside the gates was a huge courtyard.
The courtyard was vast, its ground paved with perfectly uniform tiles.
In addition, various elegant potted plants were placed all around.
Members of the Observatory dressed in black passed by from time to time, all of them appearing to be in a hurry.
Qin Shuang led Shen Bai toward the largest building while she began to explain.
"On the left is the archives. You can find all sorts of intelligence there, but you need an Observatory Token to access it."
"On the right is the supply room. You can receive various Elixirs there every month. You can also get Weapons from in there—they’re all top-quality, and if one breaks, it’s replaced for free."
"Over there is the registry. New members have to sign up there, and it’s also where you go to accept and report the completion of missions."
"And over there... if you don’t have the money to buy or rent a place, you can live in those buildings for free, but you’ll have to share."
"And here..."
As Qin Shuang continued her tour, Shen Bai gradually formed a clearer picture of the Observatory.
Before long, Qin Shuang had led Shen Bai to the largest building.
It was a two-story structure. The door on the ground floor was open, revealing numerous black-clad Observatory members bustling about inside.
"This is the most important place, known as the Core Chamber. If the archives outside hold less critical intelligence, this is where the truly classified information is kept."
Qin Shuang explained, "You can only access intelligence from here when you’ve accepted an extremely dangerous mission, and you only get what’s relevant to that mission. Not a single bit more."
"My teacher is waiting for you on the second floor. I still need to file my report on the Shengyun County inspection, so I won’t take you up."
Shen Bai nodded. "I can go up by myself."
Qin Shuang said no more. She gave Shen Bai a wave, then turned and headed toward the registry.
