I can upgrade the shelter-Chapter 149 - 147 Under Construction
After finishing breakfast, having received permission to leave, Chen Xin and Qin Lan naturally didn’t stay long at the hospital.
After getting the seeds from Hong Rui, the two left the shelter where the hospital was located.
Thanks to the gradually connecting tunnels between major shelters, returning to the police station from the hospital no longer requires traveling in the minus twenty to thirty degrees Celsius temperatures on the surface. Instead, they can travel through the somewhat warmer underground tunnels.
And doing this simply requires taking a detour through another shelter.
With Qin Lan’s Special Police Team identity, they caught a ride towards the Polytechnic University shelter.
"Driver, what goods are you delivering?" Sitting in the car, Chen Xin felt a bit bored, so he struck up a conversation with the driver.
"Some common medications and medical supplies. The health center over there is running out of some medical items, so I’m resupplying them with this truck." The driver replied to Chen Xin cheerfully, explaining his purpose.
Chen Xin casually chatted with the driver, and upon seeing the smile on the driver’s face, he couldn’t help but ask, "Driver, you seem quite happy! In these times, not many people can be as cheerful as you!"
"Oh, what’s this fuss about! When I used to drive long distances outside, I faced worse situations than this. Besides, life isn’t unlivable now. I’ve had hard times before, as long as we don’t starve, there’s nothing to worry about. Plus, whether you have a gloomy face or a smiling one, a day is still a day, so why not smile?" The driver had a carefree attitude and gave Chen Xin another big smile.
Listening to the driver, Chen Xin also laughed, "Driver, you’re quite open-minded!"
"It’s not really about being open-minded; I just think a bit more positively than others. As long as life is livable, there’s nothing worth being unhappy about." The smile on the driver’s face seemed infectious, and even Qin Lan, who sat silently beside him, couldn’t help but smile.
Since it was an underground tunnel, there were no crossroads or bends, so the car quickly arrived at the Polytechnic University.
After getting off at the Polytechnic University’s underground parking lot and thanking the driver, Chen Xin and Qin Lan looked around, planning to catch another ride to the city government to return to the police station from there.
However, as there weren’t many cars going from the Polytechnic University to the city government, they could only wait by the underground tunnel entrance for a car to come out.
Looking at the deep underground tunnel ahead, Chen Xin couldn’t help but marvel, "Our country’s infrastructure capabilities are truly impressive; it only took a few months to dig such a tunnel!"
"This is considered normal, right? This tunnel isn’t long, and with the current surplus labor force, digging and building simultaneously is naturally fast!" Qin Lan wasn’t impressed; instead, she found Chen Xin’s reaction a bit exaggerated. "Plus, there’s no such thing as unpaid contracts now; wages can be settled monthly or even daily. Workers rely on their work to eat, so it’s no surprise they work harder and faster, right?"
Regarding this issue, Chen Xin could only raise an eyebrow and say, "All I can say, Alan, is that you’re used to Flame Country’s infrastructure speed; other countries aren’t this fast."
Talking about this topic reminded Chen Xin of when he could still access the internet, and he often saw foreigners online wondering why Flame Country builds things so quickly while complaining about the slow progress in their countries.
When he first saw it, he couldn’t understand why some countries could take decades to build a road or why an airport proposal in 1959 wouldn’t break ground until 2002.
Until he learned more, Chen Xin realized that it wasn’t that other countries were slow, but that Flame Country was extraordinarily fast.
However, discussing this topic now is pointless because the existence of foreign countries is uncertain, and who is left to compete with Flame Country’s infrastructure speed?
Perhaps Lucia still exists; powerful European countries like Britain, Gaul, and Hans may or may not survive, as their governments’ control over their nations is bewildering.
As for the planet’s previously strongest nation, the Federation, all that can be said is that the heavens did not bless the Federation; under the meteorite, all are equal.
If luck were worse, a meteorite could hit Yellowstone National Park, causing Yellowstone Volcano to erupt, or land on a fault line—then all that would be left to wish is good luck to the Federation people.
Thinking about these things, Chen Xin and Qin Lan finally hailed a car carrying shift police officers back to the station, smoothly returning to the police station.
When they returned to the police station, Qin Lan, appointed by the political commissar to accompany Chen Xin these days, didn’t go on duty but stayed by his side.
Though Chen Xin had just come back from the hospital, he still went to check on the installation progress of the geothermal pumps in the station’s shelter.
Even without Chen Xin’s presence, having thoroughly discussed the relevant technical parameters and installation issues with the engineer the previous day, the drilling and doweling work progressed smoothly in his absence.
Wearing a mask and watching the workers drilling the floor, Chen Xin pulled aside the engineer in charge of on-site construction and loudly asked, "Is there any problem with the installation?"
"None at the moment. We’re currently following the dimensions you provided, Engineer Chen, to drill holes. Next, we’ll lay the base plates and level them before installing the equipment." The engineer explained to Chen Xin while opening the blueprints he was holding to further demonstrate. "You’ll need to handle the equipment debugging by then." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"It’s part of my job." Chen Xin had no objections. Since he didn’t need to personally handle the drilling and doweling, he was happy to relax and watch the workers busily at work.
Though Qin Lan didn’t understand what the workers were doing, her task now was to accompany Chen Xin, so she had no objections, standing by his side and watching the construction.
It wasn’t long before the workers completed the floor drilling, inserting expansion tubes, and began installing base plates on the floor.
Watching the workers’ construction, an idea occurred to Chen Xin: if he were to use the system function now, spending survival points to complete the installation of those six geothermal pumps, what would these workers perceive about the installation process?
However, the thought quickly faded from Chen Xin’s mind. Although he had plenty of survival points, and that was his original intention, since the workers were already on the job, it was better to conserve them and not waste survival points unnecessarily.
