I Faked My Death—Now I Have to Tame the Crazy Men I Left Behind-Chapter 42 - 40: Why Are You Trembling?
"Sister-in-law?"
Ian Sinclair was smiling as he said it.
"..."
Mia Grant’s breath caught.
Her expression was blank, tinged with shock.
But not confusion.
Ian Sinclair bit down on her lip, almost ferociously.
’And to think I’ve been thinking about her this whole time!’
Whenever Ian Sinclair thought about it—that the person he’d been calling "sister-in-law" just days ago was Mia Grant—he went mad with jealousy.
’I should just bite her to death and be done with it!’
That day, downstairs from the dorms, he’d clearly had a chance to see her.
And what happened? She just hid in his brother’s arms and didn’t even spare him a glance.
"N-no..." Mia Grant’s words spilled out between her teeth, fragmented. "That was—you’re the one who insisted on calling me that!"
"What does that have to do with me?!"
’I’m innocent in this, too.’
’He was the one who went crazy and insisted on it.’
"I never agreed to it before!"
’That time, downstairs from the dorms, he called me that, but I never responded.’
’And now he’s blaming me?’
"Hmph." Ian Sinclair didn’t let her go, biting down even harder. "You didn’t agree, but you didn’t deny it, either."
"That was you tacitly agreeing, right, sister-in-law?"
"Why are you trembling?"
"You like this sort of thing?"
He stared at her fixedly. Even though he cared like hell, he still spat out that one word through gritted teeth: "Sister-in-law?"
It was hard to tell who he was trying to provoke more with that title.
He was dying of jealousy.
"..." Mia Grant gave up. Using a gap to catch her breath, she quickly shouted, "Who’s your sister-in-law?! Have you no shame?!"
"You don’t like it?" Ian Sinclair tilted his head and scoffed, leaning against her shoulder and sniffing wildly at her neck like a puppy. "I don’t think that’s the case, sister-in-law."
Mia Grant almost couldn’t catch her breath before he kissed her again.
She tried to pull back, but he pursued her.
She was sitting on the desk, and her body fell backward uncontrollably. He placed a hand on her back, forcing her to draw infinitely closer to him.
When the kiss ended, they were both panting.
That was the longest kiss Mia Grant had ever had.
She finally believed what all those clickbait articles said—that kissing was like jogging, burning a lot of calories and helping with weight loss.
"See? I told you sister-in-law liked it."
Mia Grant held up a hand to stop him. "I admit it! That was definitely exciting!"
Ian Sinclair’s gaze instantly turned fierce.
"But!" Mia Grant did a sharp one-eighty. "I’m not with your brother! I’m really not your sister-in-law!"
Fortunately, the little wolf-dog could still understand human speech. The bloodlust in his eyes slowly faded, but some unknown emotion still churned within them.
His round eyes stared intently at the baby lamb before him, his tone fierce. "You’re lying to me. If you two aren’t together, why did you only tell him you were still alive?"
"I didn’t *only* tell him."
"After school started, he ran into me in the cafeteria. It was the day you saw us."
"I was going to tell you, too, but I haven’t been feeling well lately, so I wasn’t ready to see you..."
She turned her head and gave a delicate little cough.
Ian Sinclair froze for a second, then immediately grabbed her arm, anxiously looking her up and down.
"Were you injured after you jumped into the sea?"
"It’s my fault, my fault. When I saw you running just now, I completely forgot you could be hurt."
"Where are you hurt? Your arm? Your leg? Is it an external injury or an internal one?"
"Have you had a check-up?"
The wolf cub had turned into a puppy. If they weren’t in a public place, he probably would have stripped her bare to inspect her carefully.
"I’ve had a check-up, but they haven’t found the cause of the problem yet."
"That’s why I’ve been recuperating these past two months."
"Even my brother only recently found out I was still alive."
She continued to soothe the puppy. "You might not have been the first to know, but you definitely won’t be the last."
’The way she puts it... ah, whatever.’
Ian Sinclair decided not to fuss over it anymore.
As long as she was okay, and as long as his brother didn’t have a head start on him.
Everything else could be put on the back burner.
"I’ll take you to the hospital this weekend for another check-up. I’ll have someone arrange it."
For the young master of the Sinclair family, it was a matter of a single phone call.
"No, that’s okay. My second brother will be back soon. I’ll just have him arrange it then."
’A check-up for what? I’m perfectly fine.’
Hayes Hughes.
Ian Sinclair remembered him. He was the one who had proposed scattering Mia Grant’s ashes into the sea.
At the time, Ian had strongly supported the idea. This was mainly because he had swapped the ashes, afraid that if Silas Grant and the others took them back, they would run tests and discover the problem. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
’Scattering them was for the best.’
Destroy the "ashes" and erase the trail.
Still, he didn’t like this person. It was an indescribable feeling.
He didn’t even know him, but he just didn’t like him.
He felt an inexplicable hostility toward him.
The feeling was very familiar, just like... like how he felt about his own brother.
"Why do you have to wait for him?"
"He’s my brother, and he’s a doctor. It’s more convenient to go to him, isn’t it?"
Ian Sinclair thought for a moment and agreed.
He remembered that Hayes Hughes was indeed a doctor, and a very famous one in Jynsia at that. His family owned several private hospitals and was also in the medical equipment business.
’It would indeed be more convenient for him to take Mia Grant for a check-up. I’ll just tag along then.’
’The puppy has finally quieted down.’
’If you train him right, he’s actually quite obedient.’
Mia Grant hopped off the desk. "Okay, okay, give me back my phone. I have to get to class soon."
Ian Sinclair handed it over. Mia Grant took it, but he didn’t let go, yanking her toward him with a tug.
"Oof." The young man’s chest was hard. Mia Grant bumped into it solidly and punched him in frustration. "What are you doing?!"
The punch was painless and barely tickled. To Ian Sinclair, it was like she was just being playful.
"I just remembered something else."
The puppy evolved back into a wolf-dog, leaning down to stare at her with a serious expression.
"..." Mia Grant’s heart tightened. ’Haven’t I explained everything already?’
’What now?’
For a moment, Mia Grant’s mind raced, listing out and reviewing all her recent "crimes."
"You..."
Outside the door, the sound of chatting and laughing grew closer, and the doorknob turned. Ian Sinclair glanced over, reacted instantly, and pulled Mia Grant behind the nearby curtains.
The floor-to-ceiling curtains hung down, easily concealing the two of them.
A teacher came in, along with some staff. It seemed they were there to repair some equipment in the classroom.
No one discovered the presence of two other people in the classroom.
Behind the curtain, Mia Grant blinked, completely baffled as to why she was hiding there.
She whispered to Ian Sinclair.
He raised an eyebrow and answered her in the same hushed tone:
"Even though my brother and I have the same face, it wouldn’t be good if someone caught us having a ’tryst,’ now would it, sister-in-law?"
"Of course, I don’t care what other people think. But we have to consider my brother’s feelings, don’t we?"
"He just fainted from anger this morning. If he knew you and I were in a classroom together..."
"Shh, shh, shh!" Mia Grant’s eyelid twitched violently. She really couldn’t listen to any more of this.
Seeing her blush, Ian Sinclair deliberately teased her. "Don’t worry, I’ll be good."
"When we live together in the future, I’ll come find you when my brother isn’t home at night, okay?"
