Chapter Twenty-Two: The Quickest Way to Understand the Mystical Side Is...
As Lu Yu finished speaking, the three Shadow Servants melted into black liquid and seeped into the ground, leaving no trace of their prior presence.
“Such impressive stealth abilities, and their energy fluctuations are incredibly faint,” Lu Yu murmured with a satisfied nod. Then, raising his voice, he commanded:
“Attack me!”
The moment his words fell, the previously silent room was suddenly filled with a chilling killing intent. Three figures darted out from behind him, beneath the floor, and even from the shadows of the ceiling, each wielding black blades as they lunged at him!
The blades, flowing like black water, sliced through the air, their sharpness evident in their ability to cleave the wind itself. A single strike would surely decapitate its victim.
These assassins from the shadows, silent and unyielding, descended upon him like reapers of life.
Lu Yu felt the immense danger; even his skin tingled with a faint prickling sensation, a warning from the sharp aura around him. Yet, he remained calm, slowly raising his hand before clenching it tightly.
Boom!
A burst of pitch-black flames erupted from his palm, rapidly expanding into a circular wave that forced the attacking Shadow Servants back.
The dark hellfire clung to one of the Shadow Servants, flaring up violently like oil-fed flames, engulfing the servant entirely and consuming its shadowy essence.
Though the Shadow Servant emitted mental wails of anguish, it made no other movements. Instead, it knelt on the ground, awaiting Lu Yu’s next command.
Their intelligence was limited; their sole purpose was to obey Lu Yu’s orders.
Seeing this, Lu Yu waved his hand to extinguish the hellfire. After all, these servants were crafted from shadow animal fragments worth several thousand yuan each. Wasting them was not an option.
After the fire subsided, the Shadow Servant’s body had visibly shrunk, and its black shadow seemed even darker than before, though Lu Yu dismissed it as a trick of his perception.
He began categorising the three Shadow Servants based on the sensations during their attack. He found that the servant made from rabbit shadows was slightly stronger than those made from bird shadows, while both outperformed the one crafted from mouse shadows.
By his reckoning, the weakest mouse-shadow servant was comparable in strength to the commander Zhou Zheng he had encountered that night.
A bird-shadow servant equalled about 1.2 of Zhou Zheng, while a rabbit-shadow servant measured up to about 1.4 of Zhou Zheng.
Unit of power: Commander Zhou Zheng!
“So, the stronger the creature’s shadow, the more powerful the Shadow Servant it creates. This aligns with the law of energy conservation. But what if I used a human shadow?”
The thought of crafting a Shadow Servant from a human shadow intrigued Lu Yu. Would it possess greater intelligence or untapped potential?
The idea was enticing.
However, Lu Yu was no villain. He wouldn’t harm innocent people for his experiments. Such actions went against his principles. Thus, creating a Shadow Servant from a human shadow would have to wait for a suitable opportunity.
“You three, investigate the surrounding area for any anomalies. Report back immediately if you find anything unusual.”
Lu Yu gave the three Shadow Servants simple tasks. With their limited intelligence, they obeyed without objection, dissolving into shadows and disappearing into the darkness.
Before one of them vanished, it even took all the cages and animal corpses with it for disposal.

“How convenient. Perhaps they’ll become smarter than the Shadow Ninjas from Jackie Chan Adventures someday,” Lu Yu muttered as he lounged on the sofa. Though they resembled the Shadow Ninjas from his past life, he believed his Shadow Servants would surpass those weaklings created by the Shadow King.
“Still, while I’ve gained enough strength for self-defence and possess tools for assassination and intelligence gathering, such as the Shadow Servants, the Fear Balloon, and the unhatched Void Shadow Spider, my own abilities remain lacking. My power comes solely from monsters, without any systematic training or cultivation method. It’s like having strength but not knowing how to use it...”
Reflecting on his current state, Lu Yu realised his greatest deficiency was not rare materials or powerful skills but a comprehensive understanding of the Awakened World and a proper cultivation method.
The supernatural world seemed deliberately shrouded in secrecy. While the general populace was aware of extraordinary individuals and their abilities, knowledge about their power’s origins or any deeper secrets remained elusive.
It felt as though a mask had been intentionally placed over the truth, revealing only the tip of the iceberg to ordinary people.
Lu Yu understood the need for secrecy, given the existence of terrifying and bizarre entities capable of transforming information into memetic threats that could wreak havoc.
Still, as someone who had become an Awakened, his inability to access useful information was deeply frustrating.
Yet, fate often provides a way. The fact that information wasn’t entirely sealed off suggested that as long as it wasn’t disseminated on a large scale, obtaining it should be possible.
Lu Yu was certain he could uncover details about the Awakened World through specific channels or individuals.
In a world with advanced communication and internet technology, there were bound to be forums for the Awakened or offline gatherings where they exchanged information.
And the first step Lu Yu planned to take was...
“Posting online!”
