I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal-Chapter 32: The Reset
Adam stood perfectly still inside the cramped, dark closet. He could hear everything happening outside. He heard the door open. He heard the muffled voices of Sophia and her younger sister.
He had not expected that Sophia had a younger sister, but now he remembers that Sophia had told him. He overhears all the conversations between Sofia’s younger sister and gets extremely worried thinking what will happen if Sofia’s family catches him
He heard the teasing questions the panicked denials. The thin wooden door did little to block the sound. He remained motionless his breathing slow and even until he heard the bedroom door close again. A few moments of silence followed. Then he heard Sophia’s voice a soft whisper from the other side of the closet door.
"Adam you can come out now."
He pushed the closet door open and stepped back into the room. Sophia was standing by her bed her face a deep shade of red. She couldn’t meet his eyes. "That was my younger sister," she stammered looking at the floor. "She jokes around a lot."
Adam thinks that this doesn’t sound like a joke to me at all but he doesn’t tell this to Sophia because he has to think about how to get out of this situation right now.
Adam said nothing. He simply stood there watching her. The morning light was beginning to filter through the window casting long shadows across the room. The awkward silence stretched between them.
Sophia finally looked up at him. "It’s almost time for school," she said her voice a little stronger now. "Why don’t you take a shower? Then we can go to school together."
Her suggestion caught him completely off guard. He had planned to leave as soon as possible to slip away before the rest of her family woke up.
"Sofia is in her right mind, isn’t she?" Adam thinks this but he is unable to understand what Sophia is planning to do. He cannot live with her like this and going to school is a far-fetched idea.
He had only intended to spend one night here a single night of refuge before he disappeared back into his own dangerous world. Her casual invitation to shower to go to school together as if it were the most normal thing in the world was so far removed from the reality of his situation that he didn’t know how to respond.
He was a fugitive. He was a killer. He was a target. He couldn’t just take a shower and go to school. He knew he shouldn’t stay here any longer. It was too dangerous for her. Every moment he spent in her house he was putting her and her entire family at risk.
Before he could voice his refusal before he could explain why he had to leave a loud clatter followed by a shriek came from downstairs. It was Sophia’s sister again. Adam tensed instantly his body going on high alert.
’What was this sound? Is there something wrong? Adam becomes very surprised and alert after hearing this sound and he looks towards the door of Sophia’s room with a very serious face.
Sophia saw the look on his face. She turned towards the door. "Don’t worry," she said trying to sound reassuring. "She’s always like this. Clumsy." Her words did little to ease the tension coiling in his stomach. Something felt wrong.
"You stay here," Sophia said. "I’ll go see what’s wrong." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
She opened the bedroom door and stepped out into the hallway closing the door behind her.
Adam was left alone in the room. He sat on the edge of Sophia’s bed his mind racing. What should he do now? Should he stay here as she had asked? Should he accept her offer and continue this strange dangerous charade of normalcy? Or should he leave now while he had the chance? Disappear before she came back and spare her the inevitable pain and danger that would follow if she stayed by his side.
He sat there for a long time lost in his thoughts. The minutes ticked by. The house fell silent again. Too silent. Sophia had said she would be right back. A new kind of anxiety began to creep into his thoughts. A cold knot of dread formed in his gut. Where was she? She should have returned by now.
He stood up from the bed a sense of urgency propelling him to his feet. Something was wrong. He knew it with a certainty that went beyond logic. He walked to the bedroom door his movements now swift and decisive. He grabbed the doorknob. He turned it. He pulled the door open.
He was met with a wall of absolute all-consuming darkness.
It wasn’t the darkness of an unlit hallway. It was a void. A complete and total absence of light of sound of sensation. One moment he was in Sophia’s sunlit room. The next he was in nothingness. The transition was instantaneous. It was jarring. He was completely disoriented.
And then the familiar blue window materialized in the empty void before him.

He stared at the words his mind struggling to comprehend what had just happened. He had died. Again. But how? There had been no warning no sound no attack. He had simply opened a door and ceased to exist.
He had never died like this before. The sheer suddenness of it the complete lack of any discernible cause left him utterly baffled and deeply unsettled. This was a new kind of threat. A new kind of enemy. And he had absolutely no idea how to fight it.
