Chapter 44: Last Resort

Adam killed the third assassin. He watched the man fall to the floor, his body twitching in its final moments. He had done it. He had won. But his victory was short-lived.

His eyes widened in horror. He saw the door to Sophia’s room swing open. She stepped out into the hallway, her face a mask of terror and confusion.

Behind her, her mother and her younger sister peered out, their own faces filled with a dawning dread. They saw the bodies. They saw the blood. They saw Adam standing there, a pistol in his hand, a ghost in the midst of a massacre.

Sophia’s mother sees Adam and then sees the bodies lying on the floor. She becomes even more scared as she doesn’t know who this boy is and what he is doing. Sophia’s mother sees Adam and then sees the bodies lying on the floor. She becomes even more scared as she doesn’t know who this boy is and what he is doing.

Anastasia thought that Adam could be a possible love interest for her elder sister Sophia, but seeing the situation here, she is unable to understand that her elder sister is trapped with a man.

Adam took a step forward. He was about to yell at Sophia, to scold her for her foolishness, for opening the door, for putting herself and her family in danger. But then he saw it.

The third assassin, the one he had shot in the face, was not dead. The man’s hand was moving. It was twitching, his fingers fumbling for something hidden beneath his black tactical vest.

’ no...’ Adam thinks because he knows that if this assassin is alive then there is a huge threat to Sofia’s life. He has to neutralize him as soon as possible or else all his hard work will go waste. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Adam raised his pistol again. He aimed at the dying man’s head. But before he could pull the trigger, the assassin slammed his hand against his own chest.

Adam could not understand what this assassin was trying to do, why is he trying to kill himself by putting his hand on his chest is he giving himself some medicine or is there some kind of button that can call backup.

Adam was confused for a fraction of a second. He didn’t understand what the man was doing.

And then, a blinding white light erupted from the assassin’s body.

A massive explosion ripped through the house. The force of the blast threw Adam off his feet. He was consumed by a wave of fire and shrapnel. In the last fleeting moment of his consciousness, he saw Sophia, her mother, and her sister being engulfed by the flames. The entire house disintegrated around them.

And then, complete darkness.

Adam floated in the familiar, empty void. He was stunned. He stared into the blackness, his mind a maelstrom of disbelief and despair. He had not expected this.

A suicide bomb. It was a last resort, a final, desperate act of a cornered animal. He had been so close. He had won. And yet, he had lost everything.

He couldn’t see a way forward. There was no path to victory. Even when he managed to kill them, they still managed to kill him, and more importantly, they still managed to kill Sophia and her family. He was trapped in an impossible, unwinnable game.

His eyes snapped open. He was back in Sophia’s bed. This time, there was no system window, no reward selection. The only time he received those notifications was when he was in the void, after he had died.

He looked over at Sophia, who was still sleeping peacefully on the floor. He remembered her face in the moment of the explosion. She had been looking at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and something else, something he couldn’t quite decipher.

"You’re a huge fool," he whispered, his voice a low, bitter rasp. "But even so, I won’t let anything happen to you. Not in any situation."

He didn’t know why he was so determined to save her. He knew these feelings, this attachment, were a weakness, a dangerous liability. But he couldn’t stop himself. He couldn’t let her die. He sat there for a long moment, watching her sleep. He reached out and gently brushed a stray strand of hair from her face.

"You’re important to me," he said, his voice barely audible. "That’s why I’ll find a way out of this situation. I promise."

He stood up from the bed and walked to the door. He didn’t know, as usual, that Sophia was awake. He didn’t know that she had heard every word he had said. He didn’t know that at that very moment, she was lying on the floor, her face buried in her blanket, her cheeks burning a deep, crimson red.

Her heart was pounding in her chest, a frantic, happy rhythm. His touch, his whispered words, had sent a jolt of pure, unadulterated joy through her.

Adam stepped out into the hallway. This time, he did something different. He didn’t lock Sophia’s door. He didn’t lock Anastasia’s door. Instead, he walked over to Anastasia’s room and opened the door.

Anastasia, who had just woken up, was completely surprised to see him standing there. She stared at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and fear.
