I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal-Chapter 46: Mother
The blade slipped out of his grasp. The throw was poor. With a loud clang, it struck the distant wall after spinning through the air. The noise was merely a momentary diversion to buy him time.
He moved in that instant. He took Sophia’s mom’s hand. She gasped in shock, and her skin felt cold.
"Come on," he said, yanking her firmly.
Adam has to save Sophia’s mother at any cost or else he will have to go into another loop which he cannot tolerate at all. Adam is stuck in a loop for so long that he doesn’t know if he will be able to break free from it or not.
He pulled her into the long hallway from the Shop. In an attempt to regain her footing, she staggered behind him. The kitchen was at one end of the hall.
Sophia and Anastasia were locked in their room upstairs, where the alternate route led. The thought of them caused Adam to feel a sharp pain in his chest, but he ignored it. He couldn’t save everyone at once. The goal of this loop was to free the mother first. That was the only objective for now.
He has kept Sophia and her younger sister upstairs so that he can focus on Sophia’s mother first, but he is worried that Sophia might create some trouble again.
He drew her in the direction of the kitchen. He pushed her through the door as they arrived. He turned the lock and hurriedly closed the door behind them. The tiny kitchen echoed with the loud click. There was silence for a while. All they could hear was each other’s labored breathing.
The assassins had halted outside. They had paused at the sound of the knife. Adam then dragged the woman into the kitchen, which they witnessed. Telling the others to wait, the man in the front held up his hand. He shook his head slowly as he glanced at the closed kitchen door. The target had trapped himself, he was telling them.
The signal was understood by the other two assassins. They gave a head nod. They were aware of what to do. Lowering his body, the first man began to move down the hallway. He moved silently and slowly. He was prepared for anything with his gun aimed forward. With their own weapons at the ready, his partners trailed behind him. They weren’t rushing. They were approaching like hunters.
Adam’s mind was racing in the kitchen. He ignored the woman’s terrified cries and glanced around the room. He noticed a tiny window above the sink, high on the wall. Although it was filthy, it was an escape route. He was aware that it led to the backyard of the neighbor. It was an opportunity.
He looked at Sophia’s mom. Fear whitened her face. She had wide eyes.
Adam told her, "You have to leave." His tone was solemn and low. "By way of that window."
She looked at him as if she didn’t comprehend. She gave a headshake. "What? "How about you?" she muttered. She sounded tremulous.
Adam declared, "There is no time." "They’re on their way. I hear them. You must leave right away.
Once more, he gestured toward the window. He was growing impatient. It seemed like an hour passed every second.
He said, "Listen to me." "Leave that window. Next door is a construction site. Go hide there. Wait until I find you before you come out. Do you get what I’m saying?
She began to cry. She glanced at him before turning to face the door. She was too afraid to move. Adam was aware that he had to act quickly. A faint sound from the hallway reached his keen ears. A footstep. They were directly outside the entrance.
He took hold of her arm once more, but with much more force.
"Time is running out," he snarled. "You’re leaving."
He shoved her in the direction of the sink. He placed an antique wooden stool on the ground. He climbed up on the counter first, then reached down and drew her up next to him. She nearly fell because she was shaking so much. Pointing to the window lock, he steadied her.
"Open it," he ordered.
She worked on the rusty latch, her fingers shaking. At last, it creaked loudly open. The kitchen was filled with chilly night air. Outside, the yard was pitch black.
"Go," he said.
She gave him one final glance. She had worry and fear on her face. He left her with no options. He pushed her in the direction of the opening while placing his hands on her back. She grabbed her clothes on the window frame as she clambered through. With a gentle thud, she fell into the bushes below.
Adam didn’t observe her. Without hesitation, he locked the window and slammed it shut. He leaped from the counter. Now he was by himself. The space was chilly and deserted.
He reached into his pants and took out the silenced pistol. In his hand, the metal felt heavy. His arms were straight and he held it in both hands. He searched the kitchen for a hiding spot. There was a pantry door and a large refrigerator. He leaned his back against the pantry wall. Like a statue, he stood motionless. He inhaled slowly and exhaled.
Then he heard it. The noise he had been anticipating. The kitchen doorknob was turning slowly. They were present.
