[Aww. So touching.]
Alex pulled up the shop, confirmed the purchase of the Leadership Trial Stone—150 SP gone, but worth it—and felt the weight materialize in his palm.
It was beautiful.
Roughly the size of two fists, made of striated brown and gold stone that seemed to shift in the firelight. Carved runes covered its surface, and it pulsed with a steady, grounding energy.
"This is it," Alex said, holding it out.
Granite took it with shaking hands—his massive fingers cradling it like something precious and fragile.
"How does it work?"
"You place it in your central gathering area," Alex explained, pulling up the system’s instruction scroll mentally and reading it aloud.
"Then you announce the trial. Any who wish to be considered for succession enter the stone’s influence. It creates a separate trial space—not physical danger, but tests of character. Candidates face scenarios that reveal their true nature."
"And at the end?"
"The stone ranks them. Objectively. The tribe sees the results. The best candidate is clear."
Granite closed his eyes, clutching the stone to his chest.
"This could work," he whispered. "This could actually work."
"It will work," Alex said with certainty. "But you have to sell it to the tribe. Make them believe in it. Frame it as honoring tradition while adapting to modern needs."
Granite nodded slowly, opening his eyes.
"I’ll call a gathering," he said. "Today. Now. Before anyone can question or politick or try to undermine it."
He stood, carefully placing the Leadership Trial Stone in a leather pouch at his belt.
Then he looked at Alex—really looked at him—with an expression of profound gratitude.
"I owe you more than the Bronze Stone," he said quietly. "You’ve given my tribe hope. Stability. A future. If you ever need anything—and I mean anything—from bear territory, you have only to ask."
"Safe passage for my family," Alex said immediately. "Now and always. A guarantee that bear lands will be friendly to us and our cubs."
"Done," Granite said without hesitation. "I’ll have it written formally. Sealed with the tribe’s mark. Your family will have safe passage through bear territory for all generations."
[NICE! That’s actually super valuable! Free travel through one of the strongest territories!]
They emerged from Granite’s den to find Boulder waiting anxiously outside.
"Chief?" he asked.
"Gather the tribe," Granite said, his voice carrying new strength. "Emergency assembly. Everyone. Now."
Boulder’s eyes widened, but he nodded and loped off toward the drums.
Within minutes, the deep rhythmic booming echoed across the mountains.
[BOOM-boom-BOOM-BOOM-boom]
[Translation: "All gather immediately. Chief’s command. Urgent." ]
The tribe assembled with remarkable speed—bears pouring out of dens, abandoning tasks, converging on the central clearing with the kind of discipline that spoke to years of respect for their leader.
Amber appeared too, still wearing her ceremonial robes but without the usual elaborate adornments.
She looked diminished. Uncertain. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
When everyone had gathered—hundreds of bears in a massive semicircle around the fire—Granite stepped onto his platform.
He held up the Leadership Trial Stone so everyone could see.
"My people," he said, his voice carrying across the clearing. "I have struggled with the question of succession. I am still strong, still able to lead. But I am not young. And without a clear heir, our tribe faces uncertainty."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd.
"Traditional trials would work," Granite continued.
"But they test only strength. And while strength is important—crucial, even—it is not the only quality a chief needs."
He paused, letting that sink in.
"Our honored guest, the bearer Alex, has given us a gift. A Leadership Trial Stone. Ancient magic that tests not just strength, but wisdom. Endurance. Judgment. Heart."
He held the stone higher.
"I propose we use it. That any who wish to be considered for succession enter the trial. The stone will evaluate each candidate fairly, objectively, without bias or politics. And the tribe will accept its judgment as the will of the ancestors."
The clearing erupted—excited murmurs, nervous questions, a few skeptical growls.
Stone—Granite’s nephew, a massive bear with reddish-brown fur and a permanent scowl—stepped forward.
"And if we don’t trust this foreign magic?" he demanded. "How do we know it won’t favor someone weak? Someone who talks pretty but can’t protect the tribe?"
"The stone tests ALL qualities," Granite said firmly.
"Including strength. But it ensures the strongest candidate is ALSO wise enough to lead well. Strong enough to fight but smart enough to avoid unnecessary fights."
He met Stone’s eyes directly.
"Are you afraid the stone will reveal weaknesses in your leadership?" he challenged.
Stone’s face darkened, but he couldn’t back down without looking cowardly.
"I’m not afraid of any trial," he growled. "I’ll enter. And I’ll prove I’m the rightful heir."
"Good," Granite said. "Anyone else?"
Three other bears stepped forward—Boulder among them, which surprised Alex.
"I don’t seek to be chief," Boulder said quietly. "But I’ll enter the trial to ensure the stone is fair. To prove it works."
Granite nodded approvingly. "Well said. Anyone else?"
A young female with light brown fur raised her hand tentatively.
"I—I would like to try," she said. "I know I’m young But I want to show not all females are weak and should be protected all the time. I’ve studied our history. And I care about the tribe’s future."
"Your name?" Granite asked gently.
"Pebble," she said. "I’m Boulder’s younger sister."
More candidates emerged—seven in total.
A good showing.
"Then it’s decided," Granite announced. "We will conduct the Leadership Trial tomorrow at dawn. Tonight, candidates prepare. And tomorrow, we discover who is truly worthy to lead."
The tribe erupted in cheers—relief, excitement, hope.
Alex felt Naga’s coils tighten protectively around him as the crowd’s energy surged.
"We should go," Leo murmured. "Before someone asks how the stone actually works and you have to explain system mechanics."
"Good idea," Alex agreed.
They slipped away as Granite began explaining trial procedures—back toward their borrowed den, back to the relative safety of walls and privacy.

Bronze Stone: Yours tomorrow after the trial
Progress: Almost at 4/7!]
[Also—Host? You did good. Really good. You solved their problem without collecting another marriage proposal OR starting a war. I’m genuinely impressed.]
"Thanks," Alex said softly.
That night, they ate a quiet dinner in their den— preserved meat and honey—while outside, the tribe buzzed with anticipation for tomorrow’s trial.
"Do you think it’ll work?" Leo asked.
"The stone?" Alex nodded. "Yes. It’s designed to be fair. Objective. The best candidate will emerge."
"And if the best candidate is Stone?" Naga asked.
"The hot-headed nephew?"
"Then he’ll have been tested and found worthy,"
Alex said. "The stone doesn’t just measure current qualities—it evaluates potential. Capacity for growth. If Stone wins, it means he has what it takes to learn and mature into a good leader."
"And if Pebble wins?" Leo asked. "A young female in a strength-based culture?"
"Then the tribe will respect the stone’s judgment,"
Alex said firmly. "And maybe they’ll learn something about what real leadership looks like."
They settled into the nest as darkness fell—three bodies finding familiar positions, warmth and safety wrapped around each other.
Outside, the mountain settled into quiet.
And somewhere in the sacred caves, the Bronze Stone waited.
For The Trial Tomorrow.
[Sweet dreams, Host. Tomorrow’s going to be BIG.]
