Chapter 107: Important Call

Kade stuck to their agreement. In a very... Kade-like way. He sent only one message per week...

But each time it was a whole long essay. With a photo attached. No clear whining, but some comments about how he was sad and lonely discreetly sneaked in.

Well, whatever. Felix opened it, briefly scanned through it when he was bored (meaning: too curious to resist reading it, even when he knew it was most likely all nonsense), and then left it on read. He had already told Kade that he needed space and wouldn’t respond, so he had no reason to feel guilty for ignoring him.

Instead of worrying about the Alpha, he focused all of his energy on his daughter.

Days had passed, turning into weeks, and soon, Vivi turned four months old. By then, Felix’s anger had pretty much dissipated, but he still remained unresponsive, not wanting his peaceful time with his daughter getting disturbed by another drama Kade’s presence in his life might cause.

It was already October, and the weather started turning cold and gloomy. That day, however, the sky was uncharacteristically clear, the sun shining bright, its warm rays playing among the trees in the park. Everything was dyed in various shades of yellow, orange, and red, the ground, the treetops, and the leaves falling down every now and then, fluttering as they slowly descended to join the already thick red carpet covering the ground. It was such a pretty sight that Felix spent much longer than usual on his walk, strolling around the beaten paths, and taking plenty of pictures with Vivi as keepsakes.

He was still in the middle of this little photo shoot, when his phone suddenly rang.

Kade.

Felix furrowed his brows, staring at the screen. It was... unusual. The Alpha had been doing so well, restricting himself to one message per week as they had agreed. So what was up with him now? The last message he had sent two days prior didn’t seem weird in any way, nothing out of the ordinary. Did he suddenly lose his patience now... or was it something else? Some sort of emergency? Felix hesitated for a moment...

In the end, though, he didn’t pick it up. What sort of emergency could there be for Kade to contact Felix? It was most likely the Alpha getting impatient of being ignored for too long!

But the phone rang again ten minutes later, followed by a message, [I know that I’m not supposed to call, but it’s really important. Pick up, please!]

...Was there really something? Felix felt as if he might be falling into Kade’s trap. Still, feeling uneasy about it, he messaged Kade, telling him to call in half an hour, ended his walk there, and returned home with Vivi to get the call in private. Since it was supposed to be so important, then it probably shouldn’t be overheard.

Unless what Kade meant by important was just some nonsense, which very well could be the case.

When the Alpha called precisely thirty minutes later, Felix was already at home, sitting on the sunken couch, with a cup of hot ginger and lemon tea standing on the repainted coffee table in front of him, steam rising from his fox mug - a gift from the witch, that appeared on his porch along with groceries one day. He took a sip of his tea, then a deep breath, and answered the call.

"This better truly be important," he said as soon as he pressed the phone to his ear.

"Yes, yes, I know," Kade sighed. He sounded... different. Exhausted, and worried. It immediately put Felix more on edge as well. And the Alpha’s following words made him even more tense, "Listen, Felix... Would it be possible to get more mermaid blood?"

"...I’ve already given you four. Mermaids are not some sort of blood banks, you know? And I don’t know how much mermaid blood the witch has in his stash."

Brielle had told him that that was only a one-time thing, so that was a difficult request. As for the witch... He probably could force another ’favor’ out of her, but Felix didn’t feel comfortable with that...

But Kade insisted, "I know, I know, but... It’s really important! My... the patient’s condition had abruptly worsened, and nothing else is working. If we don’t do anything to stabilize him, I’m afraid we won’t last much longer!"

Judging by his desperate tone, it must have been someone truly important to him. Felix hesitated for a moment, pressing his lips tightly, but eventually said, "Let me ask the witch first."

"Thank you! Is he there with you?"

Felix glanced at Remi, curled up on the couch next to him, with his head on his lap. Yes, he was, but not in his human form!

"...I have a way to contact him," he just said in response.

Kade’s mind was fully focused on something else, so he didn’t pick up on the pause. "Thank you so much!"

"Mn. I’ll call you back soon."

Having said that, Felix disconnected.

"So, what do you say?" he then asked Remi, rubbing his soft head. "Can we do anything to help?"

Remi stared at him for a good minute or so, before yawning, and jumping off the couch. He walked away, disappearing somewhere, and returning a moment later with a message, freёnovelkiss.com

[I would be able to get a few more vials, but that won’t do much. If the blood hasn’t helped till now, then it won’t heal the patient. Best case scenario, he might live on by consuming mermaid blood on a regular basis.]

Consuming mermaid blood regularly... That would be tough. Then Brielle would really have to become a blood bank for whoever that patient was... And that would be too much to ask for a stranger.

A long sigh escaped Felix’s lungs. "Is there nothing we can do, then?"

Remi hesitated for a moment, but he still went out, returning with a message, [I would have to take a look at that person first.]

"And... would you be willing to do that?"

Remi tilted his head. Then, he paced around the house in circles, as if pondering over it. After which he disappeared for longer than usual...

But the message he returned with was, [Yes. As long as they come to Silverfall.]
