Chapter 106: Needing Space

Not getting any response to the video he had sent, Kade messaged him again, [You believe in my innocence now, don’t you?]

Felix glanced at the time. When Kade had sent him the video, it hadn’t even been noon yet, while now it was already past 8 PM. What happened during those few hours, Felix didn’t know...

But he could almost smell the rusty scent of blood through the phone. The scent that was most likely now clinging to Kade...

Unless that was all staged, of course. Then Kade probably wouldn’t kill a loyal guard who took a fall for him. At least not when Felix couldn’t see it. At least not in a bloody way...

Felix couldn’t help but feel bad for the poor guard Lucas. In case he was innocent. And even if he didn’t...

Felix shook his head, dispelling the thoughts. Was he really in a position to worry about strangers? He already had enough on his mind as it was.

[To be honest, I’m still not certain, as you might have just ordered him to say that...] he typed back. He hesitated for a moment, before adding, [But thank you for your effort nonetheless.]

It wouldn’t do him any good to push Kade too far. It was best to at least try to be a bit polite, no matter how suspicious and angry he still was.

Before he even managed to put down his phone, a response came. [What can I do for you to believe me?]

...That was tough. Felix didn’t know himself. Perhaps bring the guard (if he was still alive) to Silverfall, so that Felix could interrogate him with the help of the witch’s spell? Then, Felix should be able to trust his words.

But was it worth it? Digging so far. Especially at the moment, with his pup to take care of and all. Yes, Felix wanted to find the truth, but how far was he willing to go? Getting entangled in those muddy investigations... It was still fine now, but what if Vivi ended up getting neglected just because Felix decided to chase after the answers?

No, perhaps it was better to let it go. At least for now. Set all those issues aside...

[Just give me some space.] he finally answered.

[Space? What do you mean by that?]

[Ah, sorry. I forgot you don’t understand such concepts.] Felix rolled his eyes. [Just leave me alone for now. Let me be. I need to have some quiet time to myself to rearrange my thoughts.]

Surprisingly, Kade answered, [Alright.]

Only to text again a moment later, [Until when?]

Felix tapped his fingers on his... was supposed to tap on his thigh, but ended up tapping Remi, who sneaked onto his lap at some point. [I don’t know.] he answered.

[Then how am I supposed to know?]

Then, when Felix didn’t answer for a little too long, Kade messaged, [If you want to tell me to wait until you reach out first, I can’t agree to that. We both know that’s not going to happen. You’re too shy!]

Kade... had a point. That Felix wouldn’t reach out first, that is. Not about the reason - it wasn’t that Felix was so shy, but rather he was convinced that it would be best if their contact ended there, and thus wouldn’t message Kade first, even if he was no longer angry. Not that it would be a bad solution to this whole disaster of a situation, but...

[Fine. You can keep messaging me, I’ll answer when I’m ready. Just, don’t go overboard, one message per week. And don’t whine if I don’t text you back.] was what he finally decided to go with.

[Eeeeeeh? I can’t even whine now?] Kade pouted.

[You can also just not text me. Problem solved.]

[No, no, I accept it! I’ll just whine quietly... In the corner... Somewhere out of your sight...]

[Suit yourself.] Felix sighed, and tossed the phone away. It vibrated some more, but he no longer paid any attention to it. For him, their agreement regarding their one-sided silence started now.

He had more important things to do, anyway. Vivi had just woken up again, and started making noise in her cot. Not crying just yet, but knowing her patterns, Felix knew she was going to demand to be fed soon enough. Felix pulled Remi off his lap and got up, going to prepare a bath to wash Vivi up before feeding. Now that she was over two months old already, she had grown quite a bit, no longer resembling the tiny, fragile pup she had been back in the NICU. She was smiling at the bubbles, and reaching her hand, trying to catch them...

As for Felix, he became a fairly skilled parent. He cleaned Vivi up, wrapped her in a diaper and clean clothes, finishing just in time before her evening hunger stroke. Then he fed her, and once she was full and satisfied, he sat her between his legs, picked up a picture book, and started reading. Although Vivi was still too young to understand, talking or reading to babies was good for their development, or so Felix had read.

Once Vivi got tired and dozed off again, Felix gently put her back in the crib, tucking her in with a soft, fuzzy blanket, before throwing himself on the bed as well. He fell asleep with Remi snuggling up to his chest...

That was the life that he wanted. Peaceful and quiet, without any drama, conflicts, or pack politics that had always accompanied him ever since he was little. The way he was now, with his daughter and his witch of a ’pet’, in his cheap little house that he had renovated, suited him well. While he couldn’t exactly say that there wasn’t anything he would like to change...

It was still a huge improvement from what he had known in the past. And he would try his best to protect this tiny, imperfect piece of heaven.
