Chapter 28: Mixed Signals

Cold shivers went down Felix’s spine at the realization. Kade was right. Felix didn’t know when or how, but he had indeed moved closer, and was leaning forward, just a few inches shy of snuggling to Kade’s chest.

...Damn that mate bond.

Felix jolted up, and shot a few steps back, putting some distance between them as quickly as he could.

"It’s just-!" he wanted to explain himself, but he found out he couldn’t. It was just the mate bond, yes...

But there was no mate bond, was there? Or so Felix adamantly claimed.

"It’s just what?" Kade took a step forward, approaching Felix once again. To which Felix retreated, forcing Kade to take another step, only for Felix to retreat again...

Until he hit the table. He glanced around, wanting to dodge to the side, but it was too late. Kade was already right in front of him, blocking him with his arms from both sides, and pinning him to the Alpha.

"What is it?" the Alpha repeated, his low voice calm on the surface, but with a hint of impatience.

Felix couldn’t answer though. He was just standing there, leaning back, his eyes wandering around aimlessly, his breathing uneven and shallow.

It was hard to think when his... fated mate was so close.

"It’s the mate bond, isn’t it?" Kade’s hot breath brushed Felix’s ear, making his skin tingle and his knees weaken. He had to grasp the edge of the table tightly to stop himself from sliding down, limp and submissive.

"How could that be?" he finally managed to utter. "There’s no mate bond between us?"

"Oh, then you simply like me?" Kade smirked.

"Of course not!"

"You’re attracted to me."

"In your dreams!"

Kade’s eyes narrowed, staring down at Felix. In the dark room, brightened only by the moonlight seeping through the cracks in the window blinds, they looked darker than ever.

"You know," the Alpha started, speaking too slowly, dragging every syllable. "You’re really giving me mixed signals here. You say one thing, then do the other... Like, right now. You claim you’re not into me, and yet the way you are looking at me... With your hot gaze, flushed cheeks, and parted lips... It’s as if you’re waiting for a kiss."

Felix instantly pressed his lips together, trying to force his eyes to appear cold.

When Kade put it like that... He couldn’t help but feel a tinge of guilt. While it was absolutely not his intention... He was indeed giving Kade mixed signals. It was simply something he couldn’t control...

All of a sudden, he trembled, as Kade’s fingers caressed his cheek, moving on to cup Felix’s face and turn it his way. "So you’re telling me that if I were to kiss you, you wouldn’t return it?"

Felix’s stomach dropped. Of course he would. If Kade were to kiss him, even without releasing his pheromones, chances that he could resist the Alpha were... about two out of ten. And that was being generous. There was around a fifty percent chance that he would kiss the man back, and only less than ten that he would be able to push him away.

All because of that cursed mate bond. And his wolf, as its whimpering wasn’t helping.

Still, unwilling to admit it that loud, he answered with as much confidence and defiance as he could muster, "Of course I wouldn’t!" freeweɓnøvel~com

"Wanna bet?" Kade chuckled, leaning closer...

"Wow! Wow! Wow!"

Just as Kade’s lips were about to touch Felix’s, a raspy barking came from the direction of the bedroom, startling them both.

"What the..." Kade had no choice but to pull away, to take a glance at the source of the noise.

Naturally, Felix didn’t waste this opportunity Remi created for him! He blinked, his mind clearing up a bit, and ducked under Kade’s arm, escaping from the entrapment, and quickly hiding behind Remi. Not that he actually expected the fox to protect him from Kade... But it wasn’t a fight he was worried about, but rather the Alpha’s proximity. And the fox’s presence in between them prevented that.

Kade’s eyes followed him with a hint of regret, but he let Felix get away. He could have easily caught him, he was faster than the Omega, but he didn’t. Instead, he turned his attention to the fox.

"So this is where that smell of the fox on you came from?" he tilted his head, observing Remi, that was now growling at the Alpha.

Well, doing what most likely passed as growling among foxes. However, Kade didn’t find it intimidating at all, and honestly, neither did Felix. For them, wolf shifters, it was rather adorable and amusing, if anything.

"But what do you do with it that its smell on you is so strong I took you for a hybrid?" Kade hooked his brow.

"Cuddling!"

And, as if to demonstrate, Felix bent down and lifted Remi, hugging the fox to his chest, while it was still snarling and making all sorts of noises at Kade that were likely to seem threatening, but were anything but.

Kade’s face was blank for a few seconds, before his brows furrowed. "You’d rather cuddle some fox than your mate?"

"Well," Felix shrugged his shoulders, nuzzling his nose in the soft fur between Remi’s spiky ears. "I don’t have a mate, but this is my pet fox, so the answer is kind of obvious, no?"

But he didn’t want to provoke the Alpha too much, and was actually kind of bothered how Kade just stood there, watching him, silent and unmoving. All things considered, it wasn’t his fault Moon Goddess bonded him to Felix. And it must have been hard for him, when his fated mate so blatantly ignored him and flat-out denied their bond, regardless whether he was actually interested in Felix beyond their bond or not. Heck, even Felix himself was disappointed his first time, even though he had always been skeptical about the fated bond, unlike the other wolves...

So, he took a deep breath, and looked Kade straight in the eye. "I’m really sorry about whatever misunderstanding my behavior might have created, but I meant everything I said. With all due respect..."

He didn’t get to finish, because Kade turned around, and stormed off. He only stopped at the door for a moment, to throw Felix one last quick glance, and he was gone.

Felix stood in place for a good few minutes, before taking a few steps back, and dropping on the bed with a heavy sigh. He needed to lock the doors, make dinner, and work on the knitting abomination he was currently creating... But he was completely drained of all of his strength, and needed a moment to properly calm down first.

His hand involuntarily moved up to his face, his fingers brushing against his lips. He could still feel the remnant of Kade’s hot breath on the sensitive skin. Back then... He almost lost it, and leaned in for a kiss himself. His body was craving the Alpha desperately, as if Felix was suffocating, and Kade was fresh, delicious air...

Felix gritted his teeth, squeezing Remi tighter, so tight that the fox whimpered, but he hasn’t even realized. His thoughts were all revolving around Kade.

It was too dangerous. He needed Kade out of Silverfall as soon as possible...

Or else he might end up making another mistake.
