Chapter 116: Chapter 116: What If I Say, I Don’t Want to Play Anymore?

"There’s something I forgot to tell you." Thinking of what he’d found, Damian Hawthorne’s expression turned serious. He shot a casual glance at Miles Sinclair. "Mr. Sinclair, would you mind giving us some privacy? This is a private matter between me and Cecilia."

"There are no secrets between Cecilia and me," Miles Sinclair countered with a smile.

Damian Hawthorne scoffed. "Playing the part of her shadow, are we?"

"It’s understandable that you don’t grasp my relationship with Cecilia, Mr. Hawthorne. But we’ve always promised each other that we would never keep secrets."

"Is that so?" Damian Hawthorne’s lips curled into a cold smile. "Then why did the news that you’re still alive only surface recently? Where were you before?"

Miles Sinclair’s face stiffened slightly, but he returned to normal after a few seconds. "I never hid the fact that I was alive. Cecilia has been by your side all these years, and I didn’t want to disturb her."

"If it weren’t for the engagement affair between you and Serena Hughes, I wouldn’t have come to Korsyth..."

Hearing Serena Hughes’s name, Damian Hawthorne narrowed his eyes, an imperceptible chill in his voice. "Nice excuse."

"Hugo, why don’t you go upstairs first," Cecilia said, quickly intervening when she saw the tension flaring up between them again. "Don’t worry, I’ll be fine."

’I’ll be fine?!’

’What could possibly happen to her with me?’

Damian Hawthorne sneered with his usual nonchalance. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"Alright, I’ll head up then. Call me if you need anything." Miles Sinclair nodded gently and then started walking toward the stairs.

Watching their intimate conversation, Damian Hawthorne’s fists tightened.

’They’re treating me like some kind of monster.’

Damian Hawthorne’s lips curled up, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.

He used to think Hugo Grant was annoying enough, but it turned out Miles Sinclair was even worse.

"What did you want to see me about?" Cecilia asked, looking at the smile on Damian Hawthorne’s face. She felt like she understood him less and less.

She could clearly sense his displeasure.

The old Damian Hawthorne was just toying with her. Logically, her being with someone else should have been a relief for him.

She didn’t understand. Where was this faint, almost imperceptible jealousy of his coming from?

’Could it be just as Chloe said? That a man might not love a woman, but he can’t stand it when a woman who once liked him chooses someone else?’

’That’s far too possessive.’

’But on second thought, that seemed to fit Damian Hawthorne’s character perfectly.’

"Do you know Sharon Quincy’s background?" Damian Hawthorne asked.

"I do," Cecilia said in a low voice. "She’s someone Linden Nathan sponsored."

Damian Hawthorne raised an eyebrow. "That car accident... she orchestrated the whole thing herself. The driver who caused it was one of her people, too."

The atmosphere was silent for a few seconds.

Cecilia’s eyes shifted. "How do you know?"

"It was easy enough to find out."

Cecilia lowered her gaze and said nothing.

’Sharon Quincy couldn’t have used the Nathan Family’s resources to do something like this.’

’And Sharon’s own resources are easy enough to trace.’

’It was so simple to find out, yet her father didn’t want to investigate.’

’Or maybe, he was afraid of what he might find.’

Thinking of what her father’s assistant had said, Cecilia felt a sting in her nose as she fought back tears.

"I’m very curious why she would stage such a show for you." Damian Hawthorne’s words pulled Cecilia back from her thoughts.

A smile played on his lips, and his beautiful eyes stared at her without blinking. "After she ’saved’ you, Linden Nathan was adamant about adopting her as his goddaughter, as if to thank her for rescuing you."

Cecilia’s heart leaped violently, and a sudden chill ran through her entire body.

"The only thing is, not even Sharon Quincy herself expected that the accident would cost her an arm."

Cecilia looked down, lowering her voice. "This is all just your speculation. Do you have any proof that Sharon Quincy hired someone to hit me?"

"Assistant Bell will send you the information he found later. You can submit it to the police anytime." Damian Hawthorne paused, then raised an eyebrow. "If no one protects her, an act like this will land her in prison for at least a few years."

’If no one protects her...’

Cecilia gave a small laugh.

’Damian Hawthorne was reminding her that Linden Nathan might protect Sharon Quincy.’

’Since her father didn’t want to investigate, she would put the evidence right in front of his face and force him to.’

Originally, she had only found the car accident suspicious but couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason why.

’I can’t believe Sharon Quincy is so ruthless, hiring someone just to put on an act.’

’She was lucky to have survived this time. What if Sharon Quincy’s "act" had failed? What if she had actually been killed in the crash?’

’A cruel and ruthless person like Sharon Quincy absolutely cannot be allowed to stay with the Nathan Family, let alone be adopted by them and take the Nathan name.’

Watching the shifting expressions on Cecilia’s face, Damian Hawthorne’s brown eyes grew even deeper.

’Cecilia’s relationship with Linden Nathan was definitely not as simple as she made it out to be.’

’Yet, no matter how much he investigated Cecilia, he couldn’t find any relevant information.’

’Justin Bell said the Nathan Family’s information network was too vast.’

’If the Nathan Family wanted to hide something, no one would be able to uncover Cecilia’s true background.’

"Thank you for telling me all this." Cecilia’s gratitude was sincere.

’If it weren’t for Damian Hawthorne, Sharon Quincy might have deleted all this evidence long ago.’

"Given our relationship... there’s no need to be so polite." Damian Hawthorne leaned close to Cecilia’s ear and chuckled softly.

Feeling the man’s oppressive aura, Cecilia’s heart skipped a beat.

She looked up and met Damian Hawthorne’s deep, brown pools.

Although his eyes had been unable to see for a long time, now that they were healed, there was no trace that he had ever been blind.

Those glistening eyes seemed to speak every time he looked at someone.

Cecilia subconsciously took a step back. Damian Hawthorne’s lips curved as he caught her by the waist.

Viewed from upstairs, their movements looked intimate and natural.

Damian Hawthorne glanced briefly upstairs, then gently lowered his injured hand. "Your room at the Hawthorne estate is still waiting for you. You can go back anytime."

Cecilia shook her head. "I left, and I don’t intend to go back."

"Is it because of Miles Sinclair?"

Damian Hawthorne had seen through it long ago.

’The old Cecilia would rationalize things, brainwash herself, and find any excuse to stay by his side.’

’But ever since she moved out a while ago, she’s like a different person.’

’He used to think it was because of Hugo Grant, but now he knew the ’Hugo’ she mentioned wasn’t Hugo Grant, but Miles Sinclair.’

"No..." Cecilia frowned.

’If it weren’t for Serena Hughes, perhaps she would still be immersed in her days of pursuing Damian Hawthorne.’

’In the past, as long as she could be by Damian Hawthorne’s side, she didn’t care about titles or her reputation.’

’She wanted to stay by Damian Hawthorne’s side, guarding the only hope in her heart.’

’She thought Damian Hawthorne had at least some feelings for her.’

’It wasn’t until Serena Hughes appeared that she truly saw Damian Hawthorne for who he was. All this time, he had never loved her; he was just toying with her.’

"Damian Hawthorne, you know I’m getting older." Cecilia’s eyes were downcast, her long eyelashes fluttering like cicada wings. "I don’t want to play anymore. I can’t afford to."

Damian Hawthorne’s voice was cool. "What if I said I don’t want to play anymore, either?"
