Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 128: Damian Hawthorne’s Suspicion
"There’s nothing to consider." After saying this, Cecilia Nathan turned and walked in the other direction without a backward glance.
Watching her retreating figure, Damian Hawthorne’s heart suddenly felt empty.
Cecilia Nathan had changed.
She was no longer the same Cecilia who used to chase after him.
Damian Hawthorne lowered his gaze, a sudden pain stabbing his eye. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
He clutched his eye and slowly crouched down.
Cecilia had intended to leave, but she subconsciously glanced back.
When she saw Damian squatting on the ground, Cecilia’s eyelid twitched.
She hurried back, her voice urgent. "What’s wrong with your eye?"
’As expected,’ he thought. ’She still cares about my eyes.’
Damian thought of Luna from the past. She had also cared for his eyes just like this, even more than she seemed to care for him as a person.
"My eye hurts. Come with me to the hospital."
Cecilia wanted to refuse. Her lips parted, but in the end, she said nothing, only replying softly, "Okay."
If there was one thing about Damian Hawthorne she cared about most, it was his eyes. And only his eyes.
「Korsyth First People’s Hospital.」
In the examination room, the doctor held the test results and carefully observed Damian Hawthorne’s eyes.
"Your eyes were severely damaged after the last car accident. If this continues, the corneas might become unusable." The doctor studied Damian Hawthorne’s eyes and sighed softly. "I told you last time that you need to rest properly and avoid any further impact. I never expected you to get into another car accident."
The words "car accident" made Cecilia tremble.
After his eyesight had recovered, Damian Hawthorne had only been in one car accident—the time they were racing in the desert.
That time, if it weren’t for saving her, Damian wouldn’t have suffered such a heavy blow.
’In the end, it was all because of me.’
Seeing the guilt all over her face, Damian cleared his throat and said, "Don’t look so guilty. You cooked for me for a week. We’re even."
Cecilia lowered her gaze, her heart tightening.
’How could cooking for a week ever compare to him saving my life?’
"Doctor, are there any other options for his eyes? Does he need another cornea transplant?"
The doctor looked at Cecilia in surprise. "You know he’s had a cornea transplant?"
Damian’s gaze turned cold.
Very few people knew he’d had a cornea transplant. Besides the doctor, only the caregiver he had at the time knew. Even his mother, Frances Bennett, wasn’t aware.
’How does Cecilia know?’
"Yes. You just said his corneas might become unusable, and he’s had surgery before. I just guessed it was probably for his corneas."
After Cecilia spoke, the doctor nodded slowly. "That is Mr. Hawthorne’s private matter, so I won’t pry. However, a person can generally only have one cornea transplant in their lifetime. To be honest, there wasn’t a major issue with Mr. Hawthorne’s corneas themselves. But after that car accident, they’ve gradually started showing signs of rejection."
"For a cornea that was transplanted so long ago to start showing a rejection reaction now is something we didn’t expect either."
Damian scoffed lightly. "I lived in darkness for so long. Worst-case scenario, I go back. It’s no big deal."
"Doctor, how can this rejection reaction be alleviated?" Cecilia interrupted Damian.
Damian’s eyes had been cured with such difficulty. If he went blind again, not only would he be unable to accept it, but she wouldn’t be able to either.
"Actually, Mr. Hawthorne’s psychological issues are more severe right now. The cornea rejection is also a physical manifestation of that."
The doctor then went over a few other matters.
After the doctor left, Damian smiled nonchalantly. "For a moment there, I thought you still cared about me like you used to."
"Come to think of it, Cecilia, you’ve always seemed particularly concerned about my eyes."
"You’ve had surgery on your eyes. I’m afraid you’ll go blind again," Cecilia said without further explanation.
If she had to say what was most attractive about Damian, aside from his striking features, her favorite part was his eyes.
Those brown eyes, so dark they were almost black, but in the light, you could see a faint brown hue, like a translucent gemstone.
"Only my caregiver at the time and the doctor knew about my cornea transplant. How did you know?" Damian’s narrow eyes squinted, his gaze piercing, but his expression remained one of lazy indifference that was impossible to read.
"I guessed." Cecilia met Damian’s gaze without flinching. "Everyone knew Mr. Hawthorne was blind. Then suddenly, he was cured after one surgery. That kind of surgery is most likely a cornea transplant."
After Cecilia finished speaking, Damian let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"The doctor says I need to be hospitalized. Now that you know the situation, you can leave."
’If I didn’t know about the cornea rejection, I could have pretended nothing happened.’
’But now that I know his corneas are damaged, I can’t just stand by and do nothing.’
"I’ll come take care of you every day while you’re in the hospital."
"No need." Damian immediately refused, adding tauntingly, "You should go take care of your Hugo, shouldn’t you? He’s the one with the broken heart."
Cecilia ignored him, stood up, and sent a message to Chloe Sutton, asking her to bring her toiletries from home.
"Cecilia, are you crazy?! Isn’t Miles Sinclair still alive? Why are you getting mixed up with Damian Hawthorne again?"
"His corneas are showing signs of rejection."
After Cecilia said that, Chloe Sutton fell silent.
She didn’t understand the other details, but she knew that Damian’s eyes were very important to both him and Cecilia.
Especially to Cecilia.
She had been Damian’s personal caregiver for so long, all to ensure his transplant would be successful. If all that effort went to waste in the end, Cecilia would surely be heartbroken.
At this thought, Chloe stopped trying to persuade her. "Fine, fine. I’ll pack your things for you."
Hanging up the phone, Cecilia breathed a sigh of relief.
Damian, however, showed no reaction. He just took out his phone and started playing a game.
A moment later, the phone was snatched from his hand.
Cecilia’s eyes were wide. "No looking at your phone. From now on, you’re going to listen to the doctor, get your check-ups, and take your medicine like you’re told."
It was as if they had returned to the days when Cecilia was chasing after him.
Back then, she had also forcefully stayed by his side, caring for his health—especially his eyes, which she seemed more concerned about than him as a person.
Luna had been just like that, too.
Damian watched Cecilia tidy up the hospital room and asked out of the blue, "Cecilia, did you know I once hired a caregiver?"
Cecilia, who was in the middle of pulling out a chair, froze. "A caregiver? When did you hire one?"
"When I was blind." Damian seemed to be reminiscing, his voice distant. "I thought she would stay with me forever, but she left the moment I could see everything clearly."
"I never even got a clear look at her face."
Cecilia sighed. "She was just a caregiver. I’m surprised you still remember her after all this time."
"She cared about my eyes just as much as you do." Damian’s handsome face broke into a slight, roguish smile. "Sometimes, I wonder if you might be that caregiver."
