Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 135: You Believed Her Again
’Walter Wallace?’
Cecilia Nathan froze.
She knew of Walter Wallace. Her father, Linden Nathan, had told her he was Sharon Quincy’s friend and the one who orchestrated the car crash.
"What did Walter Wallace say when he turned himself in? Did they find Finn Hawthorne?" Cecilia’s heart leaped into her throat.
She remembered Justin Bell saying that Finn had followed Walter Wallace.
Justin Bell asked a few questions, then hung up the phone.
He looked at Cecilia and said in a low voice, "Miss Cecilia Nathan, they said they haven’t found Finn Hawthorne. Also, Walter Wallace claims he did all of this on his own to extort money from Sharon Quincy. According to the information from the police, it seems Sharon is now considered a victim, too."
’Sharon Quincy is a victim?’
The corner of Cecilia’s mouth twitched.
For what Sharon Quincy had done, a few years in prison wouldn’t be nearly enough.
"The police didn’t actually believe that, did they?"
「At a hotel in Korsyth.」
Sharon Quincy sat in a chair, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. "Godfather, I told you it wasn’t me! Think about it, if it really were me, would I have needed to get my own arm crushed?"
"Besides, I already knew Miss Cecilia Nathan’s identity. There was no benefit for me in doing this."
"Walter Wallace came to me for money before the accident. I told him I was just your goddaughter, and only in name, but he didn’t believe me. He said he would help me rise to the top so that I could give him more money later."
Linden Nathan looked at the police report and listened to Sharon’s explanation, his fingers clenching so tightly his knuckles cracked.
"’Helping you rise to the top’ meant killing my own daughter so you could take her place?"
Linden Nathan’s voice was like it had emerged from an ice cellar, chilling to the bone.
"I only realized that’s what he meant later! I guess he wanted to hurt Miss Cecilia Nathan because he thought that if something really happened to her, everything the Nathan Family owned would become mine. What a wild fantasy!" At this, Sharon’s eyes widened, and she trembled all over. "I sensed something was wrong at the time, so I kept following Miss Cecilia Nathan, afraid he would do something stupid. I was so worried something would happen to her, but I never expected him to be so vicious as to hit someone with a large truck."
"Godfather, I truly never meant to harm Miss Cecilia Nathan. If I really had that intention, wouldn’t it have been better for me if something had happened to her? Why would I go out of my way to put myself in danger?"
Sharon Quincy’s every word was perfectly chosen, delivered like an indictment against an unjust fate.
Linden Nathan watched Sharon’s tearful performance, pondering the truth of the matter.
The information from the police did indeed corroborate her story.
Walter Wallace had claimed responsibility for everything, and there was no evidence of him colluding with Sharon Quincy.
Sharon Quincy’s eyes were red and swollen from crying. Her arm had been amputated, and what remained was bent at a grotesque angle.
Recalling how filial Sharon had been to him over the years, the hardness in Linden Nathan’s eyes softened, and his tone grew gentle. "You really didn’t do it?"
"Yes, what Walter Wallace did had nothing to do with me. Godfather, look at me now. What reason would I have to do something like that? Life isn’t a play. The doctor said I was lucky to have even survived. Otherwise, I would have died under Walter’s wheels long ago."
Listening to Sharon’s words, Linden Nathan nodded. "I’ll trust you one more time on this matter. However, the fact that you’ve hurt Cecilia in the past still stands. Let’s schedule a time tomorrow for a meal. You can apologize to her then."
"Okay." Sharon Quincy wiped away a tear, her eyes downcast, and her voice soft. "I will apologize to her properly. Godfather, as long as it helps your relationship with her, I’ll do anything."
Thinking about how Cecilia had only started seeing him because of her, the look in Linden Nathan’s eyes softened considerably.
’Sharon Quincy is right. If it weren’t for her, Cecilia might not have ever agreed to see me.’ 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
’Although Sharon might have done some things wrong, her actions were fundamentally for the sake of his and Cecilia’s relationship.’
With this in mind, Linden Nathan handed her a card. "There are two million in here. Go buy a better prosthesis. If you need more money, you can ask me for it."
Taking the card, Sharon Quincy finally broke down and began to sob loudly.
"Thank you, Godfather."
Finally, she had regained Linden Nathan’s trust.
At the hospital, Cecilia Nathan was waiting for news from Justin Bell.
Justin Bell, after calling every contact he could, looked at Cecilia and stammered, "Walter Wallace said he only saw Finn Hawthorne once at the factory and hasn’t seen him since."
"That factory has been abandoned for a long time. If something happened to Finn, it most likely would have been at night. A fall from a cliff... or something like that."
’A fall from a cliff...’
Cecilia’s eyes widened.
The last dream she’d had was of Finn Hawthorne standing at the edge of a cliff, and then lying at the bottom of a mountain.
"What did the police say?" Cecilia’s voice trembled slightly.
"The police have already sent people to search the area at the foot of the mountain. There might be news soon."
Hearing this, Cecilia closed her eyes. It felt as if a shackle had been tightened around her heart, making it impossible to breathe.
"Let’s wait for news from the police," Damian Hawthorne said, his voice hoarse as he watched her.
’With the Skynet surveillance system everywhere, Finn’s been missing for so long... The odds are he’s already dead.’
Just then, Linden Nathan called.
Cecilia stepped out of the hospital room and answered the call just as it was about to disconnect.
"Cecilia, I’ve looked into the matter you mentioned last time. There was a small complication. Come see me tomorrow. There are some things we need to discuss in person."
Cecilia had no mind for anything else; her thoughts were completely consumed by the news about Finn Hawthorne.
"Walter Wallace turned himself in," Cecilia said after a long pause.
Linden Nathan sighed. "I know."
"Cecilia, Walter Wallace was behind everything that happened before." Linden Nathan’s voice was filled with coldness. "I’ve already hired the best lawyer to try and get him a life sentence."
’Attempted murder, life in prison...’
Cecilia gave a cold laugh. "He didn’t just try to hit me with a truck. He most likely killed someone, too."
Linden Nathan was silent for a long time.
Just then, a thought struck Cecilia, and she asked abruptly, "What about Sharon Quincy? If Walter Wallace gets life, she should get at least ten years, right?"
"Cecilia, Walter Wallace confessed he did everything himself. As for his sentence, that will also depend on whether Sharon decides to press charges."
"But they were accomplices!" Cecilia exclaimed, then she seemed to realize something. "Did Sharon Quincy say something again? And you believed her?"
"She didn’t say anything. The police simply gave me the facts of the case. Cecilia, I know you don’t like Sharon, but crime isn’t about feelings; it’s about evidence." Linden Nathan’s voice held a trace of exhaustion. "After all, she lost an arm because of you."
Thinking of the horrible state she’d seen Finn Hawthorne in during her dream, Cecilia took a deep breath and gripped her phone tightly. "Sharon Quincy is not a good person."
’If Finn is really dead, I won’t let Walter Wallace off, and I certainly won’t let Sharon Quincy get away with it.’
"I’m going to ask Sharon to have dinner with us tomorrow. Cecilia, whatever the issue is, let’s just lay it all out on the table. Sharon has taken care of me for so many years that I’ve long since come to see her as half a daughter. As your father, I hope that you two can sit down and resolve any misunderstandings instead of being enemies for life."
