Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 167: Don’t Want Him to Misunderstand
Cecilia Nathan heard Serena Hughes’s voice and looked back. When she saw Serena running toward her, Cecilia frowned slightly.
Just then, a car drove over and cut in between the two of them.
It was a black seven-seater. When Serena Hughes saw the familiar car, her expression changed instantly.
The car door opened, and the Sinclair family’s butler got out with several bodyguards.
"Take Miss Serena back."
At the butler’s word, the bodyguards immediately began forcing Serena Hughes into the car.
"No, I’m not going back! Cecilia, save me!" Serena Hughes cried out to Cecilia Nathan in a panic.
Cecilia looked at the black-clad bodyguards who had suddenly appeared, then at the Sinclair family’s butler, her expression impassive.
She and Serena Hughes were not on good terms, nor were they friends. There was no reason to help her.
Seeing Cecilia remain unmoved, Serena Hughes’s heart sank.
’She knew she and Cecilia didn’t get along. Seeing her in such a sorry state, Cecilia would probably just mock her.’
’Then she thought of that Quinn Sutton from the Sinclair family, and her heart filled with indignation.’
’Was she just going to let someone else reap the rewards like this?’
’She had to find out if Cecilia had actually helped her or not.’
"Cecilia, did you really help me solve that issue?" Serena Hughes asked, her face ashen.
’She knew she hadn’t offered Cecilia anything in return; Cecilia had no reason to help her.’
’But she had sincerely intended to help Cecilia keep her secret.’
’If Cecilia hadn’t helped her, then she had no reason to stand up to Damian Hawthorne anymore.’
Hearing this, Cecilia Nathan raised her eyes slightly.
Just then, Fiona Sinclair’s voice came from the van. "Is there something so important that it can’t be discussed at home? Must you say it in a place like this? Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough?"
Only then did Serena Hughes realize that Fiona Sinclair had come along as well.
"Grandma..." Serena Hughes started to speak, her face paling. "It’s even better that you’re here. We can ask Cecilia right now and find out if she was the one who helped, or if it was that Quinn Sutton."
"Enough! Haven’t you made enough of a scene? If you keep carrying on like this, the Sinclair family’s situation will only get worse." Fiona Sinclair said to the butler, "Take her back."
"Yes, President Sinclair."
The butler opened the door and tried to persuade Serena Hughes, "Miss Serena, please don’t upset President Sinclair any further. If her health suffers from the anger, who will be left to dote on you?"
Serena Hughes looked at Fiona Sinclair’s cold expression, and her eyes finally reddened.
’She knew that Fiona Sinclair had never believed her, not from the very beginning.’
’It wasn’t just Fiona Sinclair; even she herself didn’t believe Cecilia would help her.’
’After all, she had done so many things to hurt Cecilia in the past.’
’There was no reason, logical or emotional, for Cecilia to help her.’
Serena Hughes felt a sting in her nose as she lowered her gaze, a tear escaping from the corner of her eye.
Cecilia had already left by the time she heard Fiona Sinclair’s voice.
She had no interest in the Sinclair family’s feuds and grudges.
When Cecilia Nathan returned to her residence, she saw someone standing at her door.
Damian Hawthorne was leaning against the railing by the window, a cigarette held between his long fingers. The smoke drifted out of the open window.
The faint scent of tobacco made Cecilia feel a little dizzy.
Damian Hawthorne only smoked brands he liked. She didn’t know which kind it was, but it had a faint, fragrant aroma that was intoxicating.
Seeing Cecilia, Damian Hawthorne looked up, a slight flicker in his deep eyes.
"What are you doing here?"
"I’ve let the Sinclair family off the hook. I wanted to come and tell you the good news in person."
Damian Hawthorne’s casual words carried a magnetic, alluring quality.
Cecilia was a little surprised. "Is it because of me?"
When Cecilia had gone to see Damian Hawthorne, she hadn’t held out much hope, only intending to mention it in passing.
She hadn’t expected Damian Hawthorne to actually agree.
"I just didn’t expect that the Hawthorne Family would extend an olive branch to your Nathan Family, only for you to repay our kindness with malice."
The corner of Damian Hawthorne’s lip curled, revealing a hint of mockery.
Cecilia frowned. "What did my family do?"
"Justin Bell brought a contract proposal to your company to discuss a partnership and was rejected. But then you turned around and took that proposal to partner with the Sinclair Family. Cecilia, is this your way of getting back at me?"
Hearing this, Cecilia’s lips trembled and her eyes widened. "Impossible. My father would never do something like that."
As soon as she finished speaking, Cecilia immediately called Linden Nathan.
"Stop pretending." The thought that Linden Nathan had already handed the Nathan Family over to Miles Sinclair made the anger in Damian Hawthorne’s heart impossible to suppress.
’If Cecilia hadn’t been willing, why would Linden Nathan have brought Miles Sinclair into the fold?’
’Miles Sinclair taking over the Korsyth branch and partnering with the Sinclair Family was a clear move against the Hawthorne Family.’
"Cecilia, I have been more than fair to you. From now on, we’ll settle this in the business arena."
After speaking, Damian Hawthorne strode toward the elevator.
Cecilia’s mind went blank. She hurried after him. "Damian Hawthorne, wait!"
The instant the elevator doors closed, Cecilia stuck her fingers in between them.
"Ah!" Cecilia cried out as the doors shut on her.
Damian Hawthorne’s expression changed drastically. He quickly pried the elevator doors open and roared, "Are you crazy?!"
Then he rushed out of the elevator to check Cecilia’s hand.
Cecilia gritted her teeth and put her call with Linden Nathan on speakerphone.
"Hello, Cecilia."
"Dad, did you reject the Hawthorne Family’s partnership?" Cecilia got straight to the point.
"Huh? Is that so?" Linden Nathan sounded suspicious as he thought it over. Hearing this, Cecilia finally breathed a sigh of relief.
’This meant Linden Nathan didn’t know about it.’
"Damian Hawthorne said our Nathan Family rejected his partnership, then turned around and used his proposal to partner with the Sinclair Family. What’s going on?" Cecilia didn’t want Damian Hawthorne to misunderstand.
’Damian Hawthorne is the type to avenge any wrong. If he went up against the Nathan Family, even if they could win in the end, they would suffer heavy losses.’
’The Nathan Family absolutely could not afford to compete with the Hawthorne Family.’
"Oh, so that did happen." Linden Nathan wondered if he should tell Cecilia that he was currently training Miles Sinclair.
’If he told Cecilia now, she would probably reject the idea outright.’
’It would be better to wait until that young man Miles Sinclair passed his test and had firmly established himself at Nathan Corporation.’
"Ah, Cecilia, a young man has joined our company, and your father is grooming him. You know my personality; I don’t interfere too much when I’m developing someone. I’ve given him a one-month probation period. For this month, I won’t interfere with any of his decisions."
After Linden Nathan finished speaking, Cecilia frowned slightly.
’Why would he start training someone new at such a critical juncture?’
This was indeed how Linden Nathan had trained new talent over the years. Most people were able to achieve brilliant results within that one month.
It was also the Nathan Family’s new method for developing young talent.
Linden Nathan was the one managing the Nathan Family now; she couldn’t speak up and break this rule.
Cecilia hung up the phone and said apologetically to Damian Hawthorne, "I’ll find another way to resolve the issue with the proposal. The Nathan Family can even offer compensation."
"Compensation?" Damian Hawthorne laughed in anger. "That was my proposal. It’s not for sale. What could you possibly compensate me with?"
The thought of Miles Sinclair becoming Linden Nathan’s son-in-law in the future felt like a needle piercing Damian Hawthorne’s heart.
Justin Bell had said that Miles Sinclair was Linden Nathan’s hand-picked future son-in-law and, like Cecilia, a future successor to the Nathan Family.
’Some successor he is!’
