Chapter 142: EXPOSED

"A NOVEL that sounds exactly like your life story, Appa?" An Baekya asked to make sure he didn’t hear it wrong. Yes, he was genuinely surprised this time. "And that manuscript suddenly disappeared?"

He wasn’t faking his reaction.

An Baekya was truly bewildered after Bae Wonyoung told him about the novel that sounded like his foster father’s life story.

Yes, stories about turning back time were a common trope these days.

However, he had a bad feeling about this.

Especially since the publishing company where Aunt Gayoung is working is related to the publishing company in the other world.

Hence, it couldn’t just be a mere coincidence.

"I can’t brush it off this time," Bae Wonyoung said in a serious tone. "So, I asked your Aunt Gayoung to get the writer’s information."

Hearing that made An Baekya nervous.

But, of course, he didn’t let it show.

"Is it possible to meet the writer, Appa?"

"We’re not sure yet since, apparently, the writer is elusive," Bae Wonyoung said. "But Gayoung said she’ll beg the editor in charge of the writer if she has to."

"Are you going to confront the writer after you find them, Appa?"

"Yes, of course. Maybe they know something about us. And I want to read the novel that they wrote."

"Ah, that makes sense."

"Why do you look like this has nothing to do with you, Baekya?" Bae Wonyoung asked lightheartedly. "Do you not believe that the novel is inspired by my life in the first timeline?"

"The trope is pretty common, so I’m not entirely convinced, Appa," An Baekya said. Yes, he was trying to gaslight Bae Wonyoung into brushing it off as a mere coincidence. He didn’t think it would work this time, but he still had to try. "Maybe I’ll change my mind once we have the novel in our hands. But, for now, I’m still on the fence."

He honestly thought his foster father would be disappointed in him.

But Bae Wonyoung remained the kind and understanding person that he was.

"I get where you’re coming from, Baekya. Let’s wait until we meet the writer, or at least get a copy of the novel, before we decide whether it’s a coincidence or not."

An Baekya felt a prick in his heart.

Why does my father-in-law have to be such a good person?

His conscience was killing him.

"Papa, are you done tucking Baekya in bed?"

Fortunately, Yun Yuhyun entered his bedroom and ended An Baekya’s conversation with Bae Wonyoung.

"I’m done, Yuhyun-ah."

"Then let’s sleep, Papa."

Right.

Even though the mansion had enough rooms for the three of them, Yun Yuhyun chose to sleep together with Bae Wonyoung.

Such a baby.

"Alright, let’s sleep," Bae Wonyoung said while standing up, and then he looked at An Baekya. "Good night, Baekya."

"Good night, Appa," An Baekya said politely, and then he looked at Yun Yuhyun. "Good night, Yuhyun-ah."

Yun Yuhyun pouted before answering. "Good night, Baekya."

Aigoo.

Such a baby, indeed.

Anyway, as soon as Bae Wonyoung and Yun Yuhyun had left An Baekya’s bedroom...

"System, what the hell is going on?"

[I wish I knew, but I’m just as confused as you are. I’m pretty sure I didn’t send a copy of Bae Wonyoung’s life story in this world, An Baekya.]

"Then is it possible that the novel being the same as Appa’s life story is just a mere coincidence?"

[If the novel came from that publishing company, then it couldn’t be a coincidence.]

"Right? It’s also suspicious that the novel suddenly disappeared," An Baekya said. "System, please investigate this case and look for the mystery writer."

***

OH, MY GOSH.

Wonyoung couldn’t help but take pictures of Yun Yuhyun and An Baekya wearing their school uniform.

It was the kids’ first day as elementary students.

The two were attending a fancy international school, so their uniform also looked just as fancy.

They look like young nobles from a fantasy novel with an early European setting!

"Papa, is this a photoshoot?" Yun Yuhyun asked curiously. "You’re taking a lot of pictures of us today!"

Wonyoung grinned. "Well, I can’t help, Yuhyun-ah. You and Baekya look so cute in your school uniforms. I’m going to print these pictures later and turn them into photocards. I don’t care if I look creepy— you can’t stop me from collecting your pictures."

"It’s okay, Papa," Yun Yuhyun said. "But I also want Papa’s pictures, and I want pictures with you, too."

Aww.

"Should we take a family picture, then?" An Baekya asked. Clearly, the child was doing well on his promise to try to get along with An Baekya. "Today is a special day, after all."

"Oh, that’s a good idea."

And, so, Wonyoung took a picture with Yun Yuhyun and An Baekya.

He wanted it to be a photoshoot, but he didn’t want the kids to be late.

Moreover...

"Daddy!"

Yep, Yun Dujun was there and had been waiting for them in the front yard.

Han Myung, who would drive them to school, was already standing beside the car.

I’ll be with the kids, but Myung-ssi will drive for us.

"Good morning, Appa," An Baekya greeted Yun Dujun politely while Yun Dujun was picking up Yun Yuhyun. "Are you going with us, Appa?"

"Unfortunately, I can’t," Yun Dujun said. "I’m just here to see you off."

An Baekya just nodded politely.

"Daddy, how do I look?" Yun Yuhyun asked. "I look cool, right? Papa says I look like an angel!"

"Yes, yes, you do," Yun Dujun said. "Since your papa called you an angel, you and Baekya should behave in school." The Alpha glanced back and forth between the two kids. "Yuhyun-ah, Baekya, don’t fight. Look after each other. You are siblings, so it will make me and your papa happy if you get along well."

An Baekya nodded politely. "Yes, Abeoji."

"I’ll be an angel for Papa and Daddy," Yun Yuhyun promised. "And since I’m older than Baekya, I’ll take care of him like an older brother."

Pfft.

Wonyoung thought it was funny that Yun Yuhyun was still insisting that he was An Baekya’s hyung.

What’s with Alphas and their obsession with always being on top?

***

WONYOUNG expected Yun Dujun to open the passenger seat door for him after the Alpha put the kids in the backseat of the car, but that didn’t happen.

His (soon-to-be-ex) husband stood in front of him with a serious look on his face.

"Wonyoung-ah, I’m going back to my penthouse today."

Penthouse?

"Not your house at the village, but your penthouse?" Wonyoung asked curiously. "Well, it makes sense since the kids are with me now."

"That’s not the only reason why I’m returning to my penthouse," Yun Dujun said, still in serious mode. "Wonyoung-ah, actually, Daepyonim and I believe that someone leaked about our marriage."

"What?"

"They don’t know about you yet. But, apparently, there are undercover reporters who tried to check my civil status."

Wonyoung gasped. "Really? Then..."

"Don’t worry— they didn’t find out that I’m already married. Daepyonim and I made sure that my civil status would remain confidential."

That was a relief.

"But according to Daepyonim’s reliable sources, almost all the tabloids and huge news sites in the country have sent a team to keep an eye on me."

Aigoo.

"That’s why I’m going back to my penthouse. Everyone already knows I live there, so the reporters won’t have to look for me."

That made sense.

"So, in the meantime, it will be difficult for me to meet you and the kids."

"I understand, Hyung," Wonyoung said, nodding. "I’ll explain the situation to our children. But, even if we can’t see each other in person, make sure to call the kids every single day. Especially Yuhyun. You know how much our son loves you."

"Of course, I’ll do that," Yun Dujun promised. "I’ll also call you every single day, Wonyoung-ah."

***

"WONYOUNG-SSI, I’ll pick you up later."

Wonyoung smiled and nodded. "Thank you, Myung-ssi."

After they dropped the kids off at the school, Han Myung then drove Wonyoung to a Chinese restaurant.

Summer and Director Jin Gangseok invited him for lunch.

We’ll celebrate the music video hitting 10 million views in just one day.

Anyway, it was okay for Han Myung to continue staying by Wonyoung’s side since Han Myung was introduced to his peers as his manager.

And, well, Myung-ssi is really my manager anyway.

"I’ll return home and pick you up with a different car later, Wonyoung-ssi. Yun Dujun-nim has used this car a few times in the past, so it’s not safe to continue using this one."

Ah, right.

"Then you can just use the SUV that Daepyonim gave to me before," Wonyoung said. "You’re my manager, so it won’t be strange if you pick me up using the company car."

"Understood," Han Myung said politely. "Then I’ll pick you up later using the company car, Wonyoung-ssi."

"Alright."

"And don’t be alarmed if you notice someone keeping an eye on you. Your bodyguards will be dressed as civilians from now on, and they’ll only approach you if there’s danger."

"I understand," Wonyoung said, nodding. "Hyung also sent bodyguards to the kids, right?"

"Yes, sir," Han Myung assured him. "Gunil leads the elite team in charge of the young masters’ protection."

***

THE celebration started in a Chinese restaurant.

Summer treated everyone— the director and all the actors in the music video— to a hearty meal.

Then, before Wonyoung knew it, they were already having dinner at a barbecue place.

That meant drinking.

Thank goodness Myung-ssi will pick me up later.

Of course, Wonyoung made sure that An Baekya and Yun Yuhyun got home safely first before he joined the dinner party.

The kids already sent him a picture, so he was at ease now.

I can’t come home drunk since I want to listen to my kids’ stories about their first day of school.

"Aren’t you going to drink more, Wonyoung Hyung?"

It was Jameson— the original hero of the music video before Wonyoung took his place.

He’s also Summer-ssi’s best friend.

"I can’t drink too much since I have work tomorrow," Wonyoung lied with a bright smile on his face. "But I think you should slow down, Jameson. We’ve just started, and yet you’re already drunk."

Jameson grinned. "I’m just really happy for Summer. Aside from the fact that her music video amassed millions of views in just a day, her song also topped all the major music charts. Her comeback as a soloist is a huge hit. As her friend, I should celebrate her success this hard."

Wonyoung smiled. "You’re really a good friend, Jameson."

"You got that right, Oppa."

Summer suddenly appeared behind Wonyoung and Jameson, putting her arms around the two of them.

The star is here at our table now.

"Jameson is really a good friend," Summer said, slightly tipsy already. "Wonyoung Oppa, I want you to be my friend, too. I think you’re my lucky charm. The comments under our music video are from people curious about you, Oppa. I’m sure you’re gonna make it big!"

Wonyoung chuckled. "If I make it big, then I owe it to you and Director Jin. Thank you for choosing me for this project."

"If you’re grateful, then drink more, Oppa," Summer said while pouring more soju and beer into Wonyoung’s glass. "The night is still young~"

***

ARGH.

I drank too much.

Wonyoung went to the bathroom to wash his face, hoping it would help him get sober.

Thankfully, it worked.

I can’t drink anymore— so, I should escape while they haven’t noticed yet that I slipped away from the party.

So, he pulled his phone out of his pocket.

He was just about to call Han Myung when he got a text message from Bae Gayoung.

Wait, it wasn’t a normal message.

His cousin sent him her location.

Of course, that alarmed Wonyoung.

Gayoung wouldn’t have sent her location for nothing!

That cleared his head instantly.

Wonyoung ran out of the restaurant and immediately rode a taxi.

He didn’t want to call Bae Gayoung because his cousin might be in a situation where she couldn’t pick up his call.

But he called the police and sent them Bae Gayoung’s location.

They might get there faster than I could.

After that, he sent a message to Bae Gayoung.

<’I’m on my way, Gayoung-ah.’>

To say that Wonyoung was nervous while in the taxi would be an understatement.

And when Bae Gayoung suddenly called him...

"Gayoung-ah," Wonyoung said in a whisper, his voice breathless. "Are you okay?"

"Oppa, it’s Lee Heeju—"

Then the line suddenly got cut off as if somebody snatched Bae Gayoung’s phone from her and ended the call.

But Wonyoung heard what Bae Gayoung said loud and clear.

Lee Heeju, you bastard— you better not lay a hand on my cousin!
