Chapter 143: BAE GAYOUNG

"I’M SORRY to say this, Gayoung-ssi. But you’re just a part-timer here. I can’t give you the contact details of one of our top writers."

Oh.

Bae Gayoung already expected that Mr. Nam, the editor in charge of the mysterious writer that Bae Wonyoung wanted to meet, wouldn’t give her the information that she needed that easily.

After all, it was true that she was just a part-timer in the publishing house.

"I understand, sir," Bae Gayoung said. "I was just intrigued by the mysterious writer, so I thought I’d ask."

"It’s okay to be curious, but don’t be too curious to the point you forget your place."

"Yes, sir."

Mr. Nam was being condescending, but Bae Gayoung had already gotten used to the editor’s attitude that she had also learned to be more patient when dealing with the man.

Just pretend you’re listening to him, then forget every trashy thing he said.

"But I may consider giving you a hint if you drink with me tonight, Gayoung-ssi."

Eww.

Aside from being condescending, Mr. Nam was also infamous for being a pervert among the female staff members.

He’s a Recessive Alpha, who loves harassing women.

Since Bae Gayoung was only a part-timer, who was often working from home, she had managed to avoid the pervert’s advances.

Well, not until today.

"Come to think of it, I’m someone who’s akin to a mentor to you," Mr. Nam continued, now sneering while looking at Bae Gayoung from head to toe. "So, let me treat you to a drink tonight. I’ll teach you a thing or two about this industry."

Can I punch him?

Bae Gayoung felt disgusted while Mr. Nam was obviously looking at her lewdly.

She contemplated punching the editor, her part-time job be damned.

Thankfully, divine intervention came through and stopped her from committing a crime.

"Gayoung-ssi, can you make a copy of this contract for me?"

Bae Gayoung was relieved when Miss Kwon, another senior editor, called her and gave her an errand in a cold voice.

Miss Kwon is known for being the ’ice queen’ because she’s unfriendly.

But honestly?

Bae Gayoung would rather work for Miss Kwon than with Mr. Nam.

"Miss Kwon, can’t you see that I’m still talking to Gayoung-ssi?" Mr. Nam asked, obviously pissed at Miss Kwon’s interference. "And Gayoung-ssi is practically my mentee. You don’t have the right to order her around."

"If you want to be respected as a mentor, then you should start acting like one. All I hear is an old man harassing a young woman," Miss Kwon said bluntly, humiliating Mr. Nam in front of everyone in their department. "Gayoung-ssi, go."

Bae Gayoung nodded politely. "Yes, ma’am."

She quickly left Mr. Nam’s work station and grabbed the documents that Miss Kwon wanted her to make a copy of.

While she was leaving their office, she heard Mr. Nam and Miss Kwon fighting.

Bae Gayoung felt bad, but she was grateful that someone stood up for her.

I almost punched my so-called mentor.

***

MR. NAM and Miss Kwon were summoned to the manager’s office after their fight earlier.

Fortunately, Bae Gayoung was spared from getting scolded by the boss.

But she pretended to have lost her appetite so she could stay in the office while the others had left for lunch.

Her older colleagues took pity on her and promised to bring her delicious snacks later.

She was grateful, but she lied.

There was a reason why she pretended to be feeling under the weather in order to stay in the office alone, without being suspected.

Here you are.

Bae Gayoung smirked when she got access to Mr. Nam’s laptop.

Luckily, there was no CCTV in the office because Mr. Nam requested to have it removed.

Because he didn’t want footage of him harassing female staff members.

Anyway, Bae Gayoung was able to unlock Mr. Nam’s laptop because he knew his password.

He was her so-called mentor, after all.

So, she would often run errands for him.

Now let’s check his emails really quick.

Since Mr. Nam was one of the last people the elusive writer had contacted, she was hoping the two at least exchanged emails.

Even if it’s just an email address, I’ll take it.

Her cousin, Bae Wonyoung, almost begged her to help him.

Wonyoung Oppa almost never asks for help. And it’s the first time I’ve seen him that desperate in a while. There’s no way I wouldn’t help him after seeing him like that.

That was why Bae Gayoung was willing to risk it all for her cousin.

Unfortunately, she didn’t find the elusive writer’s email.

Maybe I should steal Mr. Nam’s phone instead?

Bae Gayoung closed the email and was about to leave the laptop alone.

However, she found a folder that was titled ’Rewind.’

Huh?

Wasn’t that the title of the supposedly stolen novel of the elusive writer?

Bae Gayoung opened the file to check if it was the right manuscript.

Since she had read a few pages of the novel, because it was stolen, she immediately recognized the story.

It was, indeed, the novel that she was looking for.

However, it was only half of the pages that she remembered from the original length of the novel. Even so, it was better than nothing.

Mr. Nam has a copy of the novel, and yet he didn’t tell the bosses?

Bae Gayoung didn’t bother wondering why Mr. Nam would hide something as important as that— she quickly printed a copy of the novel ’Rewind.’

Oppa, I hope this helps.

***

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Bae Gayoung was proud of herself that she was able to come home without getting caught.

She was able to print a copy of the novel ’Rewind.’

And Mr. Nam didn’t seem to notice that someone had used his laptop.

Mr. Nam isn’t a good person, so I don’t really feel bad stealing from him. Plus, if he finds out about what I did and threatens to snitch on me, then I’ll also snitch on him for keeping a copy of the novel that everyone has been looking for.

"I should tell Oppa..."

Bae Gayoung plopped down on the sofa and called Bae Wonyoung.

But her cousin didn’t pick up.

Maybe Oppa is at work.

She thought about taking a shower or preparing her dinner.

But something urged her to check the novel.

Hence, she found herself reading it.

And she was shocked.

The names of the characters have changed?

But it wasn’t the shocking part.

"Bae Wonyoung, Yun Dujun, Lee Heeju?" Bae Gayoung asked in disbelief. "This is too much of a coincidence."

If she remembered correctly, Lee Heeju was Yun Dujun’s chaebol friend.

I met him a few times when I was visiting Wonyoung in the hospital before.

"What kind of story is this?" Bae Gayoung asked herself as she continued to read the story. "This is very similar to Wonyoung Oppa’s life story!"

Minus the supernatural part, of course.

But the story revolved around Bae Wonyoung, who was neglected by his husband in his first life.

And Bae Wonyoung of the novel suffered in his first life because of Lee Heeju.

That bastard used his pheromones to drive Bae Wonyoung crazy?

Bae Gayoung’s heart broke into pieces when she reached the part when Bae Wonyoung from the novel hurt Yun Yuhyun— his one and only son— because he couldn’t tell what was real and what was not.

All because Lee Heeju kept messing with his head.

But it was also infuriating that the Yun Dujun from the novel didn’t pay attention to Bae Wonyoung because he was busy chasing the acknowledgement of a legendary director.

Plus, the book Yun Dujun trusted Lee Heeju too much.

But the worst of all?

Yun Dujun’s mother actively tried to kill Bae Wonyoung again and again!

And that old bitch succeeded in the end.

"My poor Wonyoung Oppa..."

However, when the book Bae Wonyoung opened his eyes, he found himself waking up from a five-year coma.

"Just like what happened to Wonyoung Oppa..."

And the first thing that greeted the book Bae Wonyoung was Lee Heeju.

This couldn’t be a coincidence!

Call me crazy, but I have a feeling that everything written here is true!

Was that the reason why his cousin was desperate to meet the writer of the novel after hearing the ’premise’ from her?

Maybe Wonyoung Oppa...

Bae Gayoung’s thought was cut off when her phone rang.

She thought Bae Wonyoung had finally called her back, but it was from an unknown number.

Thinking it was a call from work, she awkwardly answered it.

"Gayoung-ssi, this is Lee Heeju."

Excuse me?

Bae Gayoung’s eyes widened in shock.

How did he get my number?

She was only shocked for a moment, though.

Nothing is impossible for a chaebol in this country.

The bigger question was...

"To what do I owe this call, sir?"

"No need to be formal, Gayoung-ssi. Anyway, I’ll get straight to the point. You stole something that you shouldn’t have."

"What are you talking about..."

Oh.

Bae Gayoung trailed off when her eyes landed on the manuscript.

Then she was shocked when the words on the pages suddenly disappeared one by one.

Am I going crazy?

That didn’t end there, though.

When the entire page became blank, something appeared in big, bold letters.

[RUN, BAE GAYOUNG.]

Bae Gayoung didn’t know what was going on, but she didn’t need to be told twice.

She ended the call with the creepy Lee Heeju, grabbed the manuscript, shoved it into her bag, and then she bolted out of her apartment.

I’m still confused, but my gut feeling is telling me to run!

Bae Gayoung rode the taxi.

"To the department store, please."

Bae Gayoung knew that she shouldn’t be alone in this type of situation.

She would have gone to Bae Wonyoung’s new place had she known where her cousin lived. But since she decided to stay in a crowded place in the meantime, she sent her location to Bae Wonyoung and Yun Dujun.

Yes, she also sent her location to her cousin-in-law.

"We’re here, young lady."

Bae Gayoung thanked and paid the driver, and then she quickly got out of the taxi.

She was already inside the mall when she received a message from Bae Wonyoung.

<’I’m on my way, Gayoung-ah.’>

Bae Gayoung heaved a sigh of relief, and then she called Bae Wonyoung.

Luckily, her cousin picked up the call immediately. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Gayoung-ah, are you okay?"

Bae Gayoung immediately went straight to the point. "Oppa, it’s Lee Heeju—"

Huh?

She was shocked when the phone suddenly disappeared from her hand.

When she turned around, she was even more shocked to see Lee Heeju holding her phone— ending the call with Bae Wonyoung.

But how did he know I’m here?

"I saw you in my vision, child. So, I told Lee Heeju to wait for you here," the strange old woman standing next to Lee Heeju, who was wearing a traditional hanbok, said as if she could read Bae Gayoung’s mind. "You shouldn’t have gotten yourself involved..."

Bae Gayoung ran off.

Why would she stand there like an idiot while listening to that weird old woman?

Of course, she immediately bolted out of there.

But, as soon as Bae Gayoung stepped out of the department store, a blinding light greeted her...

... and that blinding light came from an out-of-control vehicle headed towards her at an alarming speed.

Like a bulldozer.

For real?

***

AN AMBULANCE?

Wonyoung had a bad feeling when he saw an ambulance in front of the department store as soon as he got out of the taxi.

He was about to run and check if his bad hunch was correct, but...

"Bae Wonyoung-ssi."

Before Wonyoung could even turn around, he felt something hard and sharp hit him at the back of his head.

Argh!

He instantly got dizzy, falling to his knees while his head was spinning.

Fuck...

Wonyoung refused to die without seeing the face of his attacker, so he forced himself to look over his shoulder and then...

BANG!
