Chapter 146: A Familiar Face

The indignation radiating from Princess Monica was a palpable force.

It was a testament to a pride that had never before been so directly and so publicly challenged.

She couldn’t bear it. The very idea that someone anyone would dare to call her weak was unthinkable to her.

Adam however simply smiled. It was a lazy almost bored smile. He leaned back in his chair in the front row. He laced his hands behind his head in a gesture of utter relaxation.

He looked at the seething princess. His eyes were filled not with malice or anger but with a condescending almost clinical amusement. He found her anger very entertaining.

"Has no one ever told you the truth before?" he asked. His voice was calm and conversational like they were just having a friendly chat. Yet each word was a carefully aimed dart at her inflated ego her immense pride.

"Is your palace filled with nothing but sycophants people who only tell you what you want to hear? Or has no one ever had the courage to remind you that you are not the strongest person on this continent? In fact," he added his smile widening slightly fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

"you are not even the strongest person of your own age." He was about to continue.

He was about to mention that her own father the Emperor had himself acknowledged another’s potential as superior to hers.

But Monica reacted before he could finish the sentence. She couldn’t take any more.

With a furious cry Monica drew her arm back. She channeled a significant amount of her own potent energy into her fist. It began to glow with a faint shimmering light. Her speed was incredible.

She launched herself forward from where she stood. Her fist was a blur aimed directly at Adam’s face. She was going to silence him. She was going to beat the truth out of his insolent mouth.

But before her punch could even come close to its target another hand shot out. It intercepted her wrist in a grip of unyielding strength. It was Professor Margaret.

The professor looked at Monica. Her beautiful features were now set in a mask of stern disapproval.

"Monica," she said her voice sharp and filled with a rare cold anger "have you forgotten where you are? Within the walls of this United Academy it is the authority of the professors and the staff members that reigns supreme. You cannot simply do whatever you please here no matter who your father is. The rules apply to you as well."

Monica her attack thwarted her anger still boiling reluctantly pulled her arm back from the professor’s iron grip. She was still trembling with rage.

Her glare was fixed on Adam who remained seated completely unbothered by her attack.

"Take back your words!" she demanded. Her voice was a low furious hiss. "Apologize for calling me weak!"

Adam’s smile only grew wider at her display of pure anger. It seemed her pride was even more fragile than he had first thought.

"Oh?" he mused a teasing lilt to his voice.

"So my words have upset you so much? This must be your soft spot. But I have not told any lies. I have only held up a mirror to you. I have only spoken the simple truth."

Professor Margaret seeing Adam so skillfully manipulating her prized student understood what he was doing. He was provoking her on purpose.

She turned her sharp gaze from the angry Monica back to Adam.

"That is enough from you," she stated her voice firm cutting through the tense atmosphere.

"Answer my question. If you are going to make such bold claims about Monica’s strength then you must prove them. Fight her." Her challenge hung in the air.

It was a direct order from one of the Academy’s highest authorities.

Adam however was completely unfazed. He looked at Professor Margaret his smile never wavering.

"I have no desire," he said his voice laced with a profound boredom "to take on the job of a babysitter. It is not my shauq my hobby or interest to fight against such weak opponents simply to prove to the Emperor’s daughter that she is in fact weak." He then gave a slight dismissive shrug.

"So Madam Professor that is my answer to you. I will not engage in any kind of fight with such a weak student of yours."

His blatant repeated and utterly public dismissal of the Second Princess of the Empire was met with a collective stunned silence.

All the students present the first-years and the upperclassmen alike were watching and listening to this unprecedented exchange.

A short distance away the remaining high-ranking professors who had stayed behind after the Principal’s departure were also observing the scene.

They were not pleased with Adam’s attitude. They did not like his open disrespect for both royalty and for a senior faculty member.

Many of the students were simply flabbergasted that Adam this "Eric" would dare to speak in such a way about the princess.

Everyone knew that Princess Monica regardless of her own strength could join any group she wished. She could command respect by her title alone. To challenge her so directly was political and physical suicide.

The anger on Monica’s face had now reached a level that was almost terrifying. She wanted to hurt him. She wanted to teach him a lesson he would never forget.

She needed to prove that his words were nothing but the empty boasting of an arrogant fool.

Just as the tension reached its breaking point just as Monica looked like she was about to explode a new voice cut in.

"Monica don’t be so angry."

Suddenly Alina was there. She had moved from her seat in the front row. And she was now standing just behind the seething princess.

Her hand was gently touching Monica’s arm trying to calm her down.

Monica’s attention and everyone else’s snapped to Alina. Who was this girl? And how did she dare to touch the princess?

Adam too was a little surprised. He watched as Alina spoke to the princess with a strange almost familiar ease. He hadn’t expected this.

He hadn’t known that Alina was acquainted with Princess Monica.

This new development added yet another layer of complexity to the already chaotic situation.

This was getting more interesting by the second.
