I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 185: Escaping the sinking ship
"They really are getting quite active. To think that they are trying to investigate the background of poor Reo Vanderlen. Do they not believe the official story?"
Leo was quite amused to see the message. Blaze was informing him that a group, claiming to be from the Galactic Union’s investigation team, had arrived on earth.
They had been asking Blaze a lot of things regarding Leo, and his so-called brother, digging as deep as they possibly could.
Fortunately, Blaze had already taken care of the documentation and the story.
"I should really thank him in person when I meet him next time. It wouldn’t have been easy to lie to the investigators. Then again, it should only be a surface level investigation for now."
He had expected something like this, which was why he had also intentionally left a few traces of Reo’s existence behind on earth, to match with Blaze’s story.
At this point, unless that investigation team was willing to grab the collars of the government officials on earth to torture them, they weren’t going to get anything.
After all, the officials were definitely more scared of Blaze, then a bunch of strangers that arrived from faraway planets.
"It looks like I won’t have to worry about the situation on earth. The Investigators can’t find a single thing on me at this point. They have no evidence that can link me to this entire situation."
Leo placed the communicator aside, and closed his eyes, his expressions soothing a little.
He didn’t know if it was because the bed was too soft, or if he had just been tired, but he soon fell asleep, without even realising.
More days passed, and the search for the Lionel Family Patriarch continued. Unfortunately, there was no result.
At this point, the officials had started removing blockades. They couldn’t keep the space sealed, with heavy fortification and search forever.
No matter how much the Lionel Family insisted on keeping the search ongoing, their words fell on deaf ears.
At this point, almost all officials had started believing that the kidnappers had probably already killed that old man. After all, there was no call for ransom.
In any case, it wasn’t a secret that the Lionel Family was on the verge of bankruptcy already, especially since the hope for recovery was growing dim with each passing second.
The family members still had their individual assets, but compared to what the family had to pay back, it was insignificant.
They had fallen to the point where all their influence had fallen to the ground. The authorities that always gave them priority, had even started ignoring their calls.
Many Warlords that had lost their valuable treasures kept in the Lionel Treasury, had already started asking them for compensation.
Even the deadline that the Family had received, had long passed. It made the situation even worse for them.
"Is there no solution? What if we sold this mansion and our shares in every company?" A bearded elder of the family asked in a meeting.
"Even if we sell our entire banking business, it still wouldn’t cover it. After all, this bank is only in name at this point since we have lost all the assets," another man said, almost pulling his hair out in frustration.
"What about our loan applications? If we can pay the compensation using loans, we can always rise in the future. We just need to get out of this situation first!" 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
"That will not work. The loan amount that we need to pay everything is too large. Moreover, the banks refuse to give us a loan."
"Tch, these bastards are probably enjoying the situation. They had always been jealous of us, and now they have the opportunity to witness our fall. They certainly won’t pay for us."
"What about Alpha Corp’s Bank? They seem to have a crazy amount of assets for some reason. They also don’t need collateral. If they can approve our loan, we should have a temporary relief."
Not realising that the Alpha Corp was behind their downfall, the family was even discussing taking a loan from them.
"I contacted them. Unfortunately, their leaders are out, so they couldn’t give us a decision. For their answer, we would have to wait."
"This is so frustrating! If only that old bastard didn’t keep the key to himself! If he had left the key behind, we could’ve returned everyone’s items and gotten out of this situation!"
Even though there were a few rumours that the entire main treasury of the family was robbed, the main descendants still didn’t believe it.
They still thought that the items were kept inside the spatial realm. It’s just that the key was gone with the old man, so they couldn’t prove that the rumors were wrong.
The meeting lasted for hours, yet there was no conclusion. In the end, they decided to continue the meeting the next day as well.
However, on their way out of the room, almost everyone looked at each other with ulterior motives, as if they had made up their mind about something.
That same night, many of the Lionel Family’s direct descendants started selling their assets, gathering their wealth in raw credits in their private unknown accounts.
They all started sneaking out of the mansion, planning to go underground, and starting a new life with their funds where no one recognized them.
It was better than losing everything.
Even though the family members that stayed behind knew that the rats were abandoning the ship, they didn’t stop them. Or rather, they couldn’t stop them.
In a dimly lit room, the eldest son of the family, stood behind the Family Lord’s throne.
"All my life, we craved this throne. And now that we have it, it’s literally worth nothing." There was a self deprecating smile on his face. "Isn’t it ironic, Fiona?"
Not far from him, his younger sister was standing before a window, watching the ships take off.
"Why aren’t you running away? You already know this throne is worth nothing. Shouldn’t you try to escape like the other rats?" Fiona asked, her gaze focused on the moon.
"Even at this point, you’re thinking about having me killed?" The young man, who was barely a little older than Fiona, chuckled. "Or do you think I’m a fool like those idiots? They don’t even realize what’s waiting for them outside?"
