I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!-Chapter 252: Unexpected Gains
While the Alpha Corporation was going through its own tribulations, Leo had decisively left the space sector without a moment of hesitation.
Although he did feel like it was a pity to leave the company that he had worked so hard to create, he didn’t dwell on it.
After all, the only reason he even started the company was to destroy it with his own hands later. It was only through a series of misfortunes that he had to get serious about protecting the company to deal with some enemies.
Moreover, he also had somewhat of a love hate relationship with this company. After all, somehow it always managed to turn profits even though he had made foolproof plans for the future.
Fortunately, now that the company had grown so big, it was almost too big to fall completely.
"If I’m not wrong, a few days later, my ’will’ will be revealed to the board. That should calm down the chaos for some time, and hopefully prevent these people from doing something extraordinary to stab me in the back with profits."
Leo was still quite curious about the unknown source of profits that had appeared out of thin air. Albeit, it was something that he didn’t find out, even now.
He had left the space sector word quite a few questions in his mind, and this was one of them.
The ship soon entered a wormhole, disappearing into the cracks of space.
.... 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
While he was still in the spatial crack, his ship was traveling at the speed that felt like teleporting from one place to another place, it was already the time of last month’s settlement.
Once again, Leo was sitting in his chair, his hands joined together as he was praying to all the gods that he knew about, praying that this settlement would be good.
Leo wasn’t just praying. He was performing what could only be described as a whole series of strange actions.
The Commander’s cabin now looked like a cross between a cathedral and a pawn shop for cursed artifacts.
Leo had spent the last hour meticulously arranging ’Bad Luck Totems’ in a perfect heptagon around his seat. In his mind, the logic was flawless.
If his good luck decisions led to accidental profits, then perhaps inviting every superstitious omen of misfortune would finally trigger the massive loss that he had wanted.
"Right. The salt circle is complete," Leo mumbled, wiping sweat from his brow. He hadn’t just used regular salt either. He had gone out of his way and used premium, mineral-rich mountain sea salt he’d smuggled from a luxury kitchen.
"And the black cat hologram is on a loop. Good."
He glanced at his surroundings:
The Broken Mirror Array with twelve tablets displayed high-resolution images of cracked glass.
The Up-Side-Down Horseshoe, formed from depleted uranium, guaranteed to let all the ’luck’ leak out.
He had literally rigged a collapsible step-ladder to stand over his chair so he was sitting ’under’ it.
That wasn’t all. He went out of his way to use all bad luck omens that he had heard about, especially the ones that could be arranged within his means.
"System," Leo said, taking a deep breath. "I am wearing my socks inside out. I have stepped on every crack in the ship’s floor tiling. I even renamed the ship to ’The Titanic II’. If this doesn’t guarantee a loss, I don’t know what will."
"If you dare give me some strange unknown profit like last time, I swear to god, I will find every way possible to find your system core and stab you to death! Even though I don’t know martial arts, you better not underestimate me!"
He adjusted the ’I Tried’ Commemorative Medal on his chest. It was the centerpiece of his ritual. He began to rub the melted-toaster metal like a man trying to summon a genie.
"Please," he chanted, closing his eyes. "No secret donors. No ’accidental’ mineral discoveries. No sudden spikes in ’brand loyalty’ because I ’died’ heroically. Don’t mess with me this time!"
He took a deep breath and donned a hat made of aluminum foil, not to block aliens, but because he’d read in a fringe forum that it inverted the flow of cosmic luck.
"Okay. I’m ready. System, initiate the monthly calculation. And remember... Don’t you dare backstab me now like last time. Or I would definitely believe that you have done some malfunction."
[System Settlement Initialized...]
[Scanning Asset: Alpha Corporation (Parent Company)]
[Status: Chaos]
[Company Integrity: 12%. CEO: Missing/Presumed Dead]
Leo nodded silently. So far, it was a good sign as the calculation began.
This was it. The moment the salt circle proved its worth.
[Analyzing Profit/Loss Ratio...]
"Come on," Leo mumbled, crossing his fingers and toes. "Give me that sweet, sweet loss. Give me the debt. Make me the King of the Beggars!"
[Calculating ’The Martyrdom Multiplier’...]
[Calculating ’Post-Mortem Brand Appreciation’...]
Leo’s eyes snapped open. "Wait. What was that last one? Are you inventing new terms to mess with me now?"
[Analysis has been completed. Showing final results!]
Soon, a new screen appeared before Leo, showing how much his company had earned in the last month and how much it had lost.
The moment Leo saw the screen, a smile flashed on his lips and he couldn’t help but jump high up in excitement.
Last time, he had done the same, but prematurely, only to see the profits appear. But this time, he waited until he actually saw the results.
He didn’t know if it was actually his schemes that had worked, or if it was also the work of his bad luck charms.
However, to his surprise, the losses this time were bigger than he had expected. Not only did the loss include the money that he had burned, but it included much more.
To Leo’s surprise, the loss was much bigger than even he had imagined. After all, the last month had truly been a mess for the company.
It had Altrea spend a massive amount of money to influence the referendum and elections on earth. And the amount of money wasted by the company, albeit not as much as what was burnt, but it was still a massive chunk.
Moreover, the company had also lost some business, especially with many branches shutting down across the entire space sector.
Even the Alpha Labs, which had been the engine of growth for his company, didn’t do much better. If anything, they spent even more to find their new research and development, now that they didn’t have to fund the bank’s activities.
For Leo, it was like losing money with both hands. Leo simply wanted to rush back to earth and hug all the so called board members for showing such an impressive performance.
To his pleasant surprise, this time the system also revealed a detailed loss of all earnings of the company, as well as the losses, including the sources.
It was only now that Leo had learned about the unknown source of income that had messed with his plans last time.
"The heck is with that new world? Since when was it under the Alpha Corporation?"
He wanted to search more about that world which he had only briefly heard about in the past, that too coincidentally.
It was a world that was fully submerged in water, and had many underwater kingdoms ruling over it.
That was the extent of Leo’s knowledge about that world. So he still didn’t understand how that place came under the control of Alpha Corporation, and why was it showing Piccolo as the person in charge of this branch in his system evaluation.
Fortunately, even that massive world had already reached the limit of what the company could earn from it. After all, even though it was a beautiful underwater world, but the resources it had were limited, and also very difficult to find and extract.
Almost all known sources had already been explored by Piccolo in the past, which was the source of the unexpected profits last time.
Moreover, this time, not only did he not gain any profits from that planet, but it wasn’t wrong to say that there were only losses.
According to his system, the entire world had suffered many natural disasters in the last month.
It had caused the loss of life, but also massive cities were suffering from the effects of the natural disasters.
Even what Piccolo had managed to extract from that world previously, had to be invested again in that world for recovery efforts.
After all, controlling a world didn’t just mean getting its resources. It also meant that you were responsible for protecting it, and Piccolo was learning it the hard way.
Meanwhile, Leo had no sympathy for Piccolo this time.
"I didn’t expect Piccolo to be the one who backstabbed me last time. This bastard... Just wait until I return next time!"
Leo scoffed, as he changed his attention to the rest of the screen which listed even more losses, which further made his eyes light up. .
Even the sub contractors of his company were suffering. It was clear that some people or competitors were targeting them, further reducing the production capacity of the company.
It was like the company went to earn a credit, only to lose five credits. That’s the only way that month could be described as.
But for Leo, it couldn’t be any better.
