Chapter 348: Shelter and Intentions

Back when Rong Zishen was still around, he had hated him deeply.

Now that Rong Zishen had been taken away by Keshun Sanfeng, he did not transfer that hatred onto Concubine Keshun.

She had only been an innocent mother.

Everything she had done was for her child, Rong Zishen. And so, Yue Mingxuan would not direct his resentment toward her.

As for that length of white silk, Yue Mingxuan never went to see it.

He was not without feeling, such things were better left unseen.

Later, it was said that Concubine Keshun was still buried with the proper rites of a consort.

Although she had committed many wrongs over the years, the Emperor had ultimately shown mercy out of old affection. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Perhaps he simply did not want to leave too much sin behind for Shang Qinghua.

Meanwhile, Yue Mingxuan had not once let go of his plans to reform Ten Thousand Wisdom Hall.

Over the past few days, he had not undertaken any grand construction, but instead repaired some of the abandoned buildings that were still usable.

He could not help but feel fortunate that the current era lacked advanced technology and that the population was not overly dense.

As a result, there were still many vacant buildings scattered about.

Moreover, this effort was being carried out across the entire country and it could even be seen as giving the beggars a "home."

Yue Mingxuan understood well what it meant to live exposed to the elements, with no shelter from wind or rain.

He could not guarantee a comfortable life for every single person, but at the very least, he could provide them with a place to take refuge and a roof over their heads, somewhere to rely on in times of hardship.

That alone was the entirety of his intention.

"You are Yue Mingxuan?"

Unexpectedly, while Yue Mingxuan was busy handling the various affairs of Ten Thousand Wisdom Hall one day, a gentle voice broke the quiet.

He looked up and saw a young man with a mild and refined demeanor.

"And you are?"

"I am the leader of the Beggars’ Sect, Zhuang Yifang," the man said with a smile, his bearing carrying an unmistakable scholarly air.

"You’re the leader of the Beggars’ Sect?" Yue Mingxuan clearly did not believe him and looked him up and down.

There was nothing about this man that resembled a beggar in Yue Mingxuan’s eyes. Yet he claimed to be their leader, how could Yue Mingxuan not be suspicious?

"You’re sure you’re the leader of the Beggars’ Sect? Dressed like this, no matter how one looks at it, you don’t seem like one of them!" In Yue Mingxuan’s impression, the members of the Beggars’ Sect were either poorly clothed or unkempt and filthy.

A beggar dressed like this, he had truly never seen one before.

"Though I am a member of the Beggars’ Sect, that doesn’t mean I must dress in rags," Zhuang Yifang replied with a faint smile. "I am indeed a beggar."

"You were so young, yet instead of doing something worthwhile, you choose to be a beggar," Yue Mingxuan sighed.

It wasn’t that he disliked beggars; he simply felt that since they had able bodies and working hands, why not find proper work instead of relying on alms?

"I used to think the same when I was younger," Zhuang Yifang said with a smile. "But later I realized that there are many interesting things within the world of beggars. Some among them possess abilities far beyond the ordinary. This identity may be looked down upon by many, but I rather enjoy it."

Well, that was his choice and Yue Mingxuan had no right to interfere. He simply asked, "Then why have you come to see me?"

"I’ve heard about your efforts to repair shelters for the beggars. What exactly is your purpose in doing this?"

"The Beggars’ Sect and Ten Thousand Wisdom Hall currently maintain a mutually beneficial relationship. I only wish to provide a centralized place for gathering intelligence. Moreover, most who beg on the streets do so out of necessity. Being forced to leave one’s home for the sake of survival is a truly miserable thing. That is why I could not help but repair these shelters for them."

These words came straight from the heart.

Back when Yue Mingxuan had been in the military, he had often seen homeless refugees living lives worse than death.

At that time, he had thought to himself that if one day he gained the ability, he would surely "provide shelter for all the impoverished under heaven and bring them joy."

He was no great hero, he simply wanted, within the limits of his own ability, to do a little more to help others.

"For someone as young as you to hold such thoughts, it is truly moving," Zhuang Yifang said. "May I ask if you would be willing to join the Beggars’ Sect?"

"I’ve said it before, this is merely a mutually beneficial arrangement between Ten Thousand Wisdom Hall and the Beggars’ Sect," Yue Mingxuan shook his head.

What a joke, there was no way he was going to become a beggar.

"That is not what I meant," Zhuang Yifang replied with a faint smile. "I only wish to ask, how much do you actually know about the Beggars’ Sect?"

"Not very much," Yue Mingxuan admitted. "But at present, the relationship between the Beggars’ Sect and Ten Thousand Wisdom Hall is quite good. I hope this relationship won’t change just because of this one matter, but can instead continue as a long-term cooperation." Having gone through so much, Yue Mingxuan had matured considerably.

At the very least, the terms he put forward now were entirely reasonable.

"Since you’ve said as much, how could we refuse?" Zhuang Yifang replied. "However, the disciples of the Beggars’ Sect are not entirely under my control. If you wish to win the hearts of the people, you will have to prove it through your own actions."

"What do you need me to do?"
