Chapter 357: Truths of Dongyue

That day, their meeting had been brief, and Yue Mingxuan had not had the chance to speak with Hua Ji at length.

Now, as he listened to Hua Ji introduce the Hua Family along the way, even this short time together was enough for him to truly feel that this was indeed a scholarly household.

Hua Ji spoke with refinement and in both his words and actions, there was a clear sense of distinction.

Yue Mingxuan found the conversation most enjoyable and gained a great deal of knowledge from it.

"I never expected that Young Master Mingxuan, though a Ger, would possess such profound insight into political matters," Hua Ji remarked.

Their discussion had not benefited Yue Mingxuan alone.

"I only think that no one can say that women and Ger are inferior to men. When Shang Qinghua of Xishang faced his most difficult times, did he not appoint his own sister as regent?" Yue Mingxuan was not familiar with the history of this world, so he could not cite examples like Hua Mulan and instead chose examples he knew.

"That is indeed true. However, women and Ger participating in politics are still quite rare in this world," Hua Ji said with a smile. "Especially someone like Young Master Mingxuan, who is both gifted and possesses such unique perspectives on governance, that is even rarer."

"I am merely repeating what others have said. The ideas I speak of are, in truth, quite simple and straightforward," Yue Mingxuan replied with a smile.

"That is not the case. What you said, ’water can carry a boat, but it can also overturn it,’ is an exceptionally brilliant statement! How many corrupt officials and foolish rulers fail to understand this principle, and as a result, plunge their people into misery?" Hua Ji sighed, then suddenly stopped himself. "Ah, I became carried away just now. Although the Hua Family of Dongyue does not forbid discussion of state affairs, such topics are still somewhat delicate and best mentioned sparingly."

Sparingly?

Yue Mingxuan found himself puzzled.

Could it be that Dongyue also had some foolish ruler? But he was a prince of Dongyue. If there truly were such a ruler, would that not be his own father?

Surely not.

After finally transmigrating and becoming a prince, having a foolish and incompetent father on top of everything would truly be too much to bear.

Yue Mingxuan did not question Hua Ji directly. Instead, he quietly asked Xie Yunlan to investigate the members of the Dongyue royal family, hoping to find out what exactly had happened there.

The Hua Family of Dongyue could be regarded as a standard for conduct and speech within the country.

If the royal family had truly done something that the Hua Family could not tolerate, then the royal house itself would have little ground left to stand on.

Before long, Hua Ji led Yue Mingxuan to the residence of the family head.

Just before stepping inside, Yue Mingxuan heard the sound of someone reading aloud from within.

The voice was clear and pleasing, so much so that he found himself momentarily captivated.

"This is the head of our Dongyue Hua Family, Hua Fengyun," Hua Ji said as he indicated the location, then turned around and left.

The residence of the family head was not a place servants could enter at will.

Yue Mingxuan knocked lightly on the door.

The sound of reading stopped, and that same gentle voice called out, "Come in."

He pushed the door open and saw a young man with a remarkably gentle gaze.

The man could be described in just a few words: refined and elegant, graceful as polished jade.

As expected of someone from a scholarly family, his demeanor alone revealed his upbringing. Seeing Hua Fengyun, Yue Mingxuan smiled. "So you are the head of the Dongyue Hua Family?"

"That’s right. You may call me Fengyun," the man replied.

His manner was refined and his voice was equally pleasant to the ear.

Yue Mingxuan nodded. "As expected of the head of the Hua Family. You truly look like someone brimming with knowledge."

"You flatter me, Young Master Mingxuan," Hua Fengyun said calmly. "I have grown up in the Hua Family and have been influenced by many elders. At most, I have a bit more experience than the average person. As for the affairs of the world, I only understand a small portion. To say I am brimming with knowledge would be an exaggeration."

Hua Fengyun was neither arrogant nor overly humble.

Although his words carried modesty, they were not self-deprecating.

Yue Mingxuan smiled slightly. "Then in your view, what is the current situation in Dongyue?"

At that question, Hua Fengyun fell silent.

The situation in Dongyue was, in truth, far from optimistic.

Yue Mingxuan had two elder brothers, one who indulged himself in pleasure day and night, and another who was addicted to gambling dens.

Neither of them possessed the qualities needed to govern a nation.

Yue Mingxuan, however, did not know any of this.

He had merely posed the question.

Hua Fengyun very much wanted to answer, but he could not bring himself to falsely claim that the situation was good.

At the same time, speaking ill of the ruler did not feel entirely appropriate either.

No matter how esteemed the Hua Family was, it was still only a family within Dongyue.

Even if one harbored resentment toward the ruler, it could not be spoken so directly.

Moreover, the person standing before him was the Fifth Prince.

Before entering, Hua Ji had already sent word ahead regarding the Fifth Prince’s identity. Thus, Hua Fengyun was well aware of who the strikingly beautiful young man before him truly was.

"If you have any opinions, just speak freely," Yue Mingxuan said with a faint smile. "I will not punish you. I’m just a prince who was thought to be dead and holds no real power."

"Since you have said so, then I will speak frankly. The current situation in Dongyue is far from optimistic."
