Dane’s eyes slowly returned to normal as the effects of the Overdrive Serum wore off. Blood dripped from his mouth, staining the concrete floor of the alleyway. With the sword still lodged in his chest, he staggered backwards away from Rick.

Axel didn’t hesitate the moment Dane turned his back on him. He forced himself up from the ground and with the last ounce of strength left in his body, he sank the sword deep into Dane’s chest.

Dane gasped as Axel twisted the sword once, then ripped it free. His body slumped forward and hit the cold ground with a dull thud.

"I had no choice..." Axel muttered as he stared down at him.

Dane’s eyes flickered weakly. The rage that once burned inside them faded, replaced by emptiness. Slowly, the light vanished completely.

Dane’s body disapeared into thin air afterwards. It was in the exact same fashion as Axel’s body vanished at the beginning .

Messages flooded Axel’s vision one after another, not giving him even a second to process what he had just done.

"Yes," Axel said quietly, since the deed was done and there was no going back.

Axel already knew what was coming next.

Axel clenched his fists and braced himself. Then the pain hit instantly.

The first one felt like lava was being injected directly into his veins. Something burning-hot surged through his body, crawling through his blood like living fire. Axel gritted his teeth so hard his jaw trembled.

Then, his bones cracked. Over and over again.

His arms bent at unnatural angles as his skeleton shattered from the inside. Then, before he could even scream, the pieces began to rebuild themselves.

Axel collapsed to his knees, choking as his muscles tore and reformed.

His skin felt like it was peeling away layer by layer, only to be forced back into place.

His blood boiled beneath his flesh, sending waves of agony crashing through his nerves.

"Arggggg!"

His eyes snapped open as golden light emitted from them, glowing so bright it lit up the alleyway. The ground beneath him cracked as his body convulsed violently.

Rick, who was there to witness an evolution, stumbled backward in horror.

"Axel!" Rick shouted. "Axel, what’s happening to you?!"

Axel couldn’t answer.

He was too busy trying not to lose his mind.

The pain kept coming. His spine arched as his body rebuilt itself again and again, like it was being rewritten at a fundamental level.

Rick watched helplessly as Axel writhed on the ground, glowing eyes burning with something definitely human.

"Stop it!" Rick yelled, tears forming in his eyes. "Please someone help him! Help—"

On the alley wall, Axel’s shadow twisted unnaturally. It started stretching longer than it should and for a brief moment, it looked like horns rose from his head before snapping back into place.

Rick caught that and he shook in fear. That looked like... a demon..

"No..." he whispered, shaking his head. "No, no, no... he can’t be... "

Rick finally stood up and ran, but there was a concrete wall waiting for him. His head rammed straight into a rusted metal pipe sticking out from the concrete wall and his body slumped, knocking him out cold.

Axel who was now on all fours, huffed and panted as the pain kept coming. Steam escaped his breath like his insides were literally on fire. Then it stopped and the glow in his eyes died down.

Axel read the message over and over again in confusion. He thought he was seeing things as a result of the after effect of the agonizing pain he just went through, but the more he looked, the more he realized how real this was.

"A demon?" He spoke out, forgetting that Rick was passed out a few feet in front of him.

Axel also realized that he had new skills available. He immediately switched over to the skill tab to check them out and it was a bliss.

Axel had gotten three new skills, The Hellrand, The Infernal Bullet and Mind wipe. All along his other skills, which were Night Vision and Identity. With the combination of all five skills, Axel felt unstoppable.

Moreover, he wasn’t done checking the new system update. He still had other tabs to explore.
