Chapter 48: A Strange Request

It was finally dawn in the Oval Academy. The morning sun rose slowly in the sky, illuminating some parts of the school grounds whilst casting shadows over others. Particularly the first-year dorm building.

Axel had been awake for the better part of nine hours since curfew. Aurora was right. As a demon, Axel needed less sleep. Not once in those nine hours did an ounce of sleep slither near him.

Over at Rick’s bed, a soft groan followed by incoherent mumbling came from his direction as he began to wake up.

Axel walked over there and waited in anticipation.

"Okay... moment of truth," he whispered.

Rick groaned again, a bit more roughly this time. He placed a hand over his head as he opened his eyes slowly, taking in his surroundings.

His eyes shifted from the space around him, to his bed, and then they landed on Axel. Rick stared at him for a while and then asked, "H-How did I get here?"

Axel sighed inwardly. It was a bit of a relief. The mind wipe worked. Rick wasn’t freaking out or tagging him as a demon. He didn’t even seem like he remembered what happened last night. But to be on the safe side of things, Axel asked, "What’s the last thing you remember?"

Rick rubbed the back of his neck as he thought about an answer. "Uh... we were walking out of the second-year building, and then all of a sudden... you pushed me? Why’d you do that, Axel?"

"I uh... I—" Axel stuttered as he tried to find his words. "Someone was trying to rob us. They launched an attack on us, but you didn’t see it," Axel responded.

"We were attacked?" Rick asked skeptically.

Axel nodded. "Yes. When I pushed you, you hit your head against a steel pipe and passed out instantly. Luckily, the moron was a Lumina 5 who thought we were easy targets..."

Axel told his lies like a pro. He managed to twist the truth with a lie in such a way that it couldn’t even be questioned. A person didn’t just develop that kind of skill overnight... unless they had become a demon, of course. Axel felt terrified of how easy it was for him to fabricate such a story and deliver it in the grandest way possible.

Even more terrifying, it was all improvised. It wasn’t like he spent the night practicing what to say to Rick when he woke.

Rick sighed, then chuckled nervously. "Okay... that makes sense. I would have believed that someone erased my memories or something."

It was time to get to class, and almost immediately, Rick and Axel were ready. They walked without Ares today, considering he was currently occupied.

"Do you know if they allowed him to rest... or sleep at least?" Rick asked as they strode down the gravel path toward the first-year building.

"Unless they didn’t sleep themselves, then yes, I guess..." Axel answered.

Together, they made it over to the first-year building. The place was already packed with first-year students.

There was one thing that had always been on Axel’s mind since day one, one that he hadn’t really had the time to address properly.

His sister.

She was nowhere to be found. He had promised himself to find her after getting to the Oval Academy, but ever since then, he had been caught in one dramatic event after the other.

Now, with clear thoughts, he finally realized how sloppy he had been in finding her.

Regardless, he made his way to the homeroom. Today’s class schedule was history, specifically, the history of the new world itself.

Axel was distracted throughout. He wondered about the whereabouts of his twin, Kris. He wondered what Ares was going through in the second-year building, and above all, he wondered who took the Godrend sword.

Each problem seemed to be eating him up from the inside, causing him to slowly go over the edge. Eventually, history class ended. Now it was time for combat lessons.

Axel didn’t know how to explain to Marc that he had lost the sword. It was a gift to him, and he discarded it. That wasn’t courteous.

Maybe I should get another one. Maybe a replica or something. That girl, Lynn, should have it in her shop...

But the problem with that idea was money. Axel only had 65 CNT. It wasn’t even enough to afford a low-tier Mythic Shard.

"Here we go."

The doors to the weapons chamber swung open, and everyone walked in. Unlike last time, when no one had weapons of their own and relied on the low-grade weapons provided by the chamber, half the students now had weapons of their own.

Fancy and sleek-looking Mythic weapons of different tiers hung on the backs and waist straps of some students. These ones were lucky enough to be able to afford them. That only meant they came from privileged families.

That wasn’t the case for the likes of Axel and Rick.

There was also someone in the crowd who didn’t have any weapon on her. Axel could have sworn she was from a powerful family because of how she carried herself, but she had none. It was none other than Nile Reed.

The other girl, Kinsey Kit, was also there among the crowd. She wielded a Mythic bow, with a quiver of arrows.

’She has her own weapon? She must be a rich kid...’

Axel wanted to use the ID skill on the weapon to see its grade, but he was more than five feet away from her position. He thought about walking up to her, but just as he was about to move, Marc stepped out of the shadows with that same clandestine form he had used yesterday.

"Gather round, students. Welcome to today’s session of weapons and combat training. As usual, you shall be pairing up with someone, and you shall spar with your respective partners."

He paused and glanced at Axel. His gaze dropped to Axel’s waist, where the sword should have been. He continued regardless.

"Go on. Pick your partners and get ready to spar..."

All the students scurried around to find sparring partners, mainly because they didn’t want Marc himself choosing for them. They didn’t want to end up like Rick, who got paired up with someone far more powerful than him.

Axel and Rick stood together, unmoving—until someone tapped Axel’s shoulder from behind. He turned around, and standing before him was Kinsey.

He never really noticed it before, but she was a beauty. So many pretty girls around him these days.

"Would you like to be my sparring partner?" she asked. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
