Chapter 62: Lust, Greed, Wrath

As a young demon, what do you do when someone asks you, "Are you a demon?"

Do you listen to the literal voice in your head, urging and pressing you to end their life? Or do you turn back to what is left of your humanity and keep your hands clean?

In the case of Axel Vaelon, now standing in a corner of the dimly lit infirmary room, he kept his gaze fixed on Kinsey, the supposed myth guru who had just questioned what he was.

With a calculated look on her face, Kinsey took a step toward Axel, her eyes scanning his body as if the answers were written all over him. Then she shrugged.

"Hm... I expected demons to be a bit more... reddish."

She stretched her neck, trying to get a glance behind him. "Do you have a tail?" she asked humorously.

"What? No!" Axel retorted. "I do NOT have a tail because I am not a demon. What the hell are you even talking about? You must be on something. Whatever it is, I would like to have some..." Axel said, trying to clip his nervous tone. The best thing he could do for himself right now was to point her in another direction, far from demon-related topics.

But Kinsey... her mind about Axel was already made up. Partly because of his earlier silence when she had asked if he was a demon.

"Don’t deny it. You are a demon. Your silence earlier was a dead giveaway," she revealed bluntly.

Axel, realizing that denial wasn’t going to be as effective, decided to try another approach. All of Aurora’s suggestions were starting to get out of hand.

"Incapacitate her! Then you can accuse her of trying to kill you and they’ll lock her up! No one would believe the words coming from a prisoner. Or you could just kill her... it does sound like a refined plan."

Axel ignored Aurora’s suggestions and tried one of his own.

"So what if I was a demon, which I am not... I don’t have a tail, I don’t have horns, and I certainly don’t have red skin. I’m completely normal."

Kinsey tilted her head in a way that said she wasn’t buying any of that.

"Demons don’t necessarily need to have horns or tails. Especially young demons," she revealed.

"Let me educate you a little bit..."

The way she spoke to Axel was calm and controlled, like none of this was terrifying. She openly confronted and spoke to a literal demon so casually, like they were buddies from middle school.

"According to old myth books, demons lived and walked amongst humans, sometimes possessing them to do their bidding..."

"There’s always a hierarchy in everything. There are strong demons like the Archdemons, and there are weaker ones like the Imp."

Axel tried to hide his surprise as Kinsey spoke. She definitely knew a lot about demons.

"Imps don’t have tails or horns, not yet anyway. As time goes on and they hone their desires, the stronger they get. The more souls and powers they absorb will determine if they break their barrier and evolve. The next level of demon I know about is the Warden Demons..."

Axel’s eyes widened, shock written all over his face, and he wasn’t hiding it.

’Holy mother of fuck! How does she know this?!’

Axel remembered looking through the system after his evolution. From what he remembered, a Warden Demon was his very next evolution stage, and Kinsey had guessed it perfectly.

What next now? She would guess that his Infernal Core was damaged?

If Aurora had some sort of server with wires, it would be on fire because she was losing it.

"I warned you, Imp! This human is a problem that will get you killed! End her miserable existence now! She knows way too much about demonkind to be left alive. Do you know what the information of a demon being present on Earth could do? You could bring forth the presence of interdimensional beings!" Aurora warned.

Axel was immediately intrigued by the mention of interdimensional beings.

’Do you mean like the Skavs? What would they want with a Demon Imp like myself?’

Kinsey was still explaining, having no idea of the conversation happening in his mind.

"...I don’t really know what comes after the Wardens, but I know there’s something else."

Axel barely listened to what she had to say after that, his attention pulled back to the voice in his head.

"Well, thanks for your lecture. It would have been really helpful if demons were real, but they’re not, so—"

"Hold on. Have you had your first crash out yet?" she asked suddenly.

He raised a brow. "Crash out?"

Kinsey nodded once. "Yes. Young demons are usually unstable. They need to perform certain sets of tasks to become stable. Without performing them, they break down, lose their minds, and eventually wither away into mindless demons."

"Wait... are you being serious?"

She nodded.

Axel gulped. He had no idea what she was talking about. Perform tasks? The system hadn’t given him any tasks, and Aurora, who was supposed to guide him, hadn’t mentioned anything either.

"Let me indulge you for a bit," he said, stepping forward. "What are these tasks you’re talking about?"

Kinsey continued, "For a demon to become stable, they must fulfill three of the most basic demonic urges. The first one is Lust."

"Lust?" Axel repeated. "Lust as in—" He couldn’t form the words properly.

"Yes, lust as in wild sex," Kinsey said, rolling her eyes. "A young demon must drown themselves in it for as long as they can. Only then do they break the barrier and become stable."

The thought didn’t sit right with Axel at all. He had never imagined himself behind closed doors with a girl, let alone repeatedly.

"Oh boy... what are the other two?"

"Greed and Wrath. For greed, an Imp should take and take whatever they want. As for wrath..." Kinsey lowered her voice. "Let’s just say you’ve already started fulfilling that one without even knowing it."

"Fulfilling it how?" Axel asked, confused.

Kinsey stepped closer, stopping only inches away. She stared him dead in the eyes.

"What you did to Luke Fern a month ago... what you used to defeat him. That wasn’t a mutant entering a berserk state as people thought. I believe that was a demon unleashing his wrath."

The words hit Axel like a brick wall.

The Infernal Overload is Wrath? Aurora, why didn’t you tell me any of this?

Before Aurora could answer—
