Infinite Adaptation: Starting As A Level 1 Slime-Chapter 41: Magic Stones
The two walked toward the city gates.
The guard from before noticed them and raised an eyebrow.
"Out so soon?"
Lunaris nodded.
"We just took up a quest at the Adventurer’s Guild to earn some money. Since our carriage and all our belongings were lost and all..."
The guard’s expression softened with understanding.
"I see. Stay safe out there. Don’t stray too far - there could be monsters."
"We’ll be careful. Thank you."
...
They arrived at a location a decent distance from the town. Not too far, but far enough to be surrounded by wilderness.
Lunaris walked through the grass, then bent down to pick a plant.
With Appraisal, he could easily identify the actual herbs needed for the quest.
He turned to Mira and held up the herb.
"Pick these ones."
She nodded.
He wondered if she actually understood.
Then she started moving.
Her hands blurred through the grass, plucking herbs at a rapid pace.
Lunaris was surprised.
He decided not to fall behind and increased his own pace.
...
About an hour later.
A massive pile of herbs sat before them.
Lunaris looked at it.
"I think we might’ve overdone it a little."
He glanced toward the horizon. The sun was beginning to set.
"We need to get back. It’s getting late."
He looked at the pile again.
This much should get us enough for a place to stay, right?
He extended his hand. The entire pile of herbs vanished into his storage.
...
The two walked along the streets toward the Adventurer’s Guild.
Then suddenly...
Lunaris’s eyes widened.
He grabbed Mira and pulled her behind a corner.
She was startled. Her mouth opened to speak...
He quickly gestured for her to stay silent.
He peeked around the edge of the building.
Seria was walking out of the guild. Another woman about the same age accompanied her.
Although he was in his disguise form, he felt the saintess might recognize him. So he decided to hide.
Hmm, that woman...
He studied her.
Why does she...
Suddenly, the woman turned in his direction.
He quickly ducked back behind the wall.
He exhaled.
That was close.
Why did I even bother peeking when I don’t rely on my eyes to see?
He needed to get used to his current situation.
...
Seria turned to her companion.
"Is something wrong?"
The girl kept her gaze fixed on a certain place. Her eyes were sharp, searching.
Seria followed her line of sight.
"Did you see something?"
The girl shook her head slowly.
"No... it’s nothing."
She turned and continued following Seria.
That’s strange.
Why do I feel like...
...
At the Adventurer’s Guild.
The receptionist smiled warmly.
"Just put it right there."
Lunaris blinked.
"Like... on the counter?"
She nodded.
"It’s quite a lot. Is that okay?"
"No problem at all!"
He extended his hand.
Herbs began pouring from his inventory onto the counter.
More and more.
And more.
The receptionist’s expression shifted from professional calm to barely contained shock.
"That’s... quite a lot."
She stared at the mountain of herbs before her, then looked at him.
In such a short time too...
"Mr. Lunaris, do you by any chance have an appraisal skill?"
He hesitated.
"I guess I do."
"Ah, that explains it!"
She nodded to herself.
"No wonder you could collect so many herbs in such a short time."
She bowed slightly.
"Thank you for your contribution. Thanks to this, the guild will have an adequate supply for quite a while."
She paused, then asked...
"Are you by any chance a merchant?"
Then she quickly waved her hands.
"I apologize for asking! That was too forward of me."
"It’s fine," Lunaris said. "I actually am. How did you realize?"
She relaxed.
"It’s just... I thought you were a noble at first. But I didn’t recognize you as a member of any noble household. You could also be from another nation, but with only one bodyguard? And registering at the Adventurer’s Guild too - most nobles don’t do that."
She smiled.
"So I figured you were a merchant. The nail in the coffin was your appraisal and item box skill."
"Item box?" he asked.
"Wasn’t that an item box?" She gestured at the herbs. "The one you used to store all these?"
"Ah... yeah. Right."
Mira interjected.
"How much will we get for the quest?"
"Ah, right! Sorry!"
The receptionist gathered herself.
"Give me just a second to tally everything."
"No problem."
Lunaris and Mira walked to a nearby table and sat down.
Mira leaned in slightly, whispering to his ear.
"My Lord, these people seem to be paying more attention to us. They might have bad intentions. Should I act?"
「I noticed too.」
Mira’s eyes widened in surprise as she heard his voice directly in her head.
「Calm down. This is Thought Communication. I’ve given you the skill as well, so we can communicate like this from now on when we want to be secretive.」
She composed herself, though her amazement was still visible.
「As expected of the Lord.」
A pause.
「Then... what about these people?」
「Leave them be. We won’t interact much anyway.」
At that moment, the receptionist walked over.
"Thank you for waiting!"
Lunaris looked up.
"Is it done?"
That was fast.
"Yes!"
She clasped her hands together.
"What form of payment would you like? Magic stones, or cash?"
"Magic stones?" he asked, confused.
"Yes, magic stones from monsters."
People pay with that?
He didn’t say it aloud. He didn’t want to seem too ignorant after claiming a merchant identity.
"We’ll take half as cash and half as magic stones."
"Alright!"
A few seconds later, she returned with two pouches.
Mira took them.
"Thank you for your work today!"
Lunaris waved it off as he rose from his seat.
"Mira, let’s go."
...
The two walked outside.
As they did, Lunaris took out the two pouches they had received. He juggled them between his hands as they walked.
Inside the first pouch - he had appraised it - were five D Rank magic stones.
In the other pouch were fifty silver coins.
He wondered where this put him in terms of wealth. He had no idea how the economy here functioned.
Well, at least he knew one D Rank magic stone was worth ten silver. So that was something.
D Rank?
Since these came from monsters, did that mean he was worth ten silver coins?
He didn’t know what to think about that.
Also... this magic stone.
Could it be...
"Excuse me!"
A voice interrupted his thoughts.
A girl walked up to them.
"Are you looking for a place to stay..."
She paused.
"Ah, it’s you guys!"
Lunaris smiled.
"We meet again."
He nodded at her.
"Thank you for helping us earlier. And yes, we do indeed need a place to stay this time."
Her face brightened.
"Great! I’ll guide you to the best inn in town!"
