Infinite Evolution: My Idle Evolution System-Chapter 276: A Troubled Opal
"What's the matter?" Cassius asked through voice transmission.
Opal hung her head a little low. Slightly curling her candy-red lips, she clenched onto his robes even tighter. However, seeing as she was still unable to figure out how to voice transmit back, she threw up some gang signs.
"Hmm?" Cassius's irises pulsed in confusion. "I'm sorry, but I still can't understand sign language. But here—I'll take out a piece of paper and have you write down what you're trying to tell me."
Opal shyly nodded, finding it a bit difficult to return his overbearing gaze.
FWIP!
Appearing in front of Cassius was a blank piece of paper; it fell to the stone bench and settled down before him. He picked it up and showed it to Opal.
"I'm going to create a pencil as well," he said while gently handing the piece of paper to her. "Wait… you know how to write, don't you?"
Embarrassed, Opal furiously nodded. Her adorable cat ears flapped all over the place for a second, making her appear all the cuter.
Cassius inwardly chuckled before using his [Creation's Touch] Skill to create a #2 pencil. He handed the pencil to the cute cat-girl, then waited.
However, after nearly a minute of watching her watch him, he playfully karate-chopped her on the head. "You can begin writing any day now," he said with a small laugh.
His voice, together with his very effective karate chop, brought Opal back to her senses. She had been dazed, staring into his soul-sucking eyes. Mortified—that was how she felt in that moment.
She ducked her head, now only able to see a bit of Cassius's robes and the paper placed below her. Her heart rate unnaturally quickened as she frustratingly scribbled on the paper what she had been wanting to tell him.
After she was done, she slammed the paper into Cassius's chest without looking at him. She may have been deaf and mute, but she was aware enough to realize that she was probably blushing like a fool right now; showing him would be too embarrassing.
Cassius glanced at the cat-girl anxiously twirling her thumbs beside him, then he looked at the paper in his hands. Upon reading what was on it, he outwardly voiced its contents:
"Thank you."
Opal blushed even harder when she heard him voice transmit the contents of the paper to her mind. She cutely squinted, a pout adorning her pretty features. She then threw a punch toward his right arm—but afraid that she might hurt him, she held back at the last second. Her punch, making contact with his arm, seemed to release a small cartoonish wisp of smoke before dying out anticlimactically.
Cassius covered his mouth, concealing a playful chuckle. "You really are quite funny," he said. "And you're welcome. Also, don't worry, I'll overlook the fact that you gave me a free bath."
Opal blushed, lowering her head once more.
She wasn't used to talking with someone like this, but it was nice. She liked it. Liked it very much.
If only temporarily, talking to him helped her forget about what her captors had done to her Head Guard—her dear friend…
Cassius, noticing another flux in her emotions, laid his hand against her head again. "Would you like me to get revenge for you and your friend?" he asked, serious.
Opal opened her mouth to say something, but was unable to get anything out. She frustratingly bit her lower lip, gripping her hands against her dirty dress until the whites of her knuckles started to show. Then she went to make the motion of shaking her head.
But just then, Cassius's hand stopped her head from moving.
"You don't need to worry about inconveniencing me," he said, looking straight ahead—away from her puzzled gaze. "I just happen to know your older sister. Also, it's not like I'll be doing it for free. You'll have to do something for me in return."
"!?!?"
'Yun, Yun!?' Opal thought. She shook Cassius with a newfound level of excitement, too excited to even realize what he had said about her owing him something.

Cassius halted her incessant shaking with a head pat—which seemed to be the universal solution to everything.
"I'll help you get your vengeance and get out of here for the sake of your sister and that favor I asked for," he said. "Do you agree to the terms?"
It was only now—after burning through most of her excitement gauge—that Opal comprehended the rest of what he said. She immediately became frightened; her face shadowed as she cupped her breasts and retreated to the bench corner once more.
"...Not that kind of favor," Cassius said with a twitching smile, face-palming. "I was going to ask if you'd consider teaching me sign language in exchange for me getting you out of here. A pretty fair trade, wouldn't ya say?"
Opal's nerves eased up, and she returned to her previous spot next to Cassius. She then raised her hands and made a few more gang signs. Her expression—although unreadable—appeared to be holding back something troubling.
Although Cassius couldn't understand sign language, he didn't need to know the language to figure out what she was telling him.
"My reason for learning sign language is simple," he said, slightly smiling. "If I understood it, wouldn't it be easier to communicate with you?"
Opal stared blankly, still in the process of comprehending his words. However, when they eventually got through to her, she instantly lowered her head and turned away from him.
It was only after a few seconds of wiggling that she turned back to him. And although she attempted to hide it, her complexion was still tinged red from the moment she just had with herself.
"So, I assume that's a yes?" Cassius asked, all smiles. "If so, then I think we'll be escaping here very soon."
Opal—although happy—appeared troubled. She wanted to nod yes so badly; she wanted to get out of here; she wanted to avenge her friend.
But…
But what about this man? This acquaintance of her elder sister? Wouldn't he die if he were to face those strong hooded men?
He and she had only just recently met each other for the first time ever… but she didn't want him to die. He was nice. Too nice to foolishly get himself killed for her sake…
