One week later...

Tuesday, September 9th 2025.

The training ground settled into evening as yet another intense training session came to an end.

The sun hung low over the training ground, its light cutting across concrete and steel, casting long shadows that stretched between the scattered recruits.

Dust lingered in the air, drifting slowly now that movement had stopped, the heat of the day bleeding away with it.

Most of the recruits remained where they were, bodies heavy and unresponsive. Some sat on the ground with their backs against steel frames, others stood in silence, heads lowered, drawing breath in controlled pulls. Uniforms were dark with sweat, smeared with dirt, marked by repeated impact.

Kate stood near the edge of the field, shoulders lowered, chest rising and falling in slow, as she took deep breaths. Fatigue weighed visibly on her posture, arms hanging loose at her sides, muscles tight from overuse.

Lina stood beside her, still on her feet, with a steady posture. The fading sunlight traced the outline of her uniform and caught briefly in her hazel eyes as she glanced across the field. Sweat clung lightly to her collar and jaw.

Kate and the other recruits understood that the training was far from over. This was just yet another break that they had been given, as they usually trained until night time.

By now, Kate could already feel the impact of the training. She was steadily growing stronger.

During all this time, they had never engaged in any combat training. All that they did was physical training throughout, ranging from endurance conditioning, functional strength, speed and agility, balance and coordination, flexibility, and recovery-focused conditioning.

By now, quite a number of people had already begun showing dissatisfaction. It was clear, they were not happy with this training regime.

For some of them, it seemed that when they were recruited, they had been hoping for more action.

Each of the recruit here possess the incredible physical fitness, and quite some combat skills. So, when they were recruited, they thought that they had been recruited because of the skills that they possessed.

But if that was the case, why was it that ever since they had been recruited, they had been dumped here at the training center, and nothing about the organization was explained to them?

All that they did from day to night was to train and train yet again, until they were completely exhausted.

As for the diet itself, it wasn’t incredible at all. In fact, most of them found the meals here disgusting, as compared to what they were eating before.

Kate did not bother with what other trainees were doing. Instead, she was thinking of something else.

Secondly, something that she noticed was that, the number of recruits this time was quite high.

Initially, after she joined, she thought that some of them would be eliminated. But until now, there was no sign of that at all.

According to the information that Michael had obtained about NEXUS, it was clear that the number of members within this organization usually ranged from 30 to 50, with 50 being the maximum number of members.

So, she was wondering, was there a possibility that they had changed the policy of the organization, deciding to recruit more people?

Or was there a possibility that the organization had suffered incredibly recently, and they wanted to replenish the numbers?

Or was it possible that after this training, they would officially start eliminating others? After all, they had never mentioned anything about the organization and its specifics.

Even during the time of the recruitment, the one that recruited her, Richard Theodore, only mentioned that she would be given the chance to take revenge.

Everyday, after each training session, he would approach, trying to chat with them.

Unfortunately, neither of the two ladies was interest in chatting with him, especially considering that the topics that he selected did not interest them in the slightest.

They had already tried giving hints that they did not have any interest in chatting with him, but this guy seemed to have a very low EQ.

During this entire week, from the beginning where they were giving some responses, to the time when they began giving a one word response for an entire paragraph of his words, then to when they only nodded or shook their heads, until now that they completely ignored him, this guy still persisted.

It seemed that Evan had not expected such a response from Lina. So, he seemed unsure of what to say next, as he remained silent for a few seconds.

But his next words left the two ladies dumbfounded. He said, "If you guys are not interested in what I usually talk about, then no problem. You can give me a topic, and we will talk about it.

I am someone who is very interested in many things. I believe that what you are interested in, I also have some interest in it. So, everyone can have a common topic that they can talk about, and we can get to know each other better, right?"

This time, neither of the two ladies was sure on how to talk to this guy. Simply put, from the way that Lina had said, it was clear that they didn’t want to chat with him.

But this guy, it seemed that he understood it directly, instead of the deeper meaning. Was he just not using his brain or was he doing this on purpose?

It seemed that Lina had become much more impatient. She looked at Evan and said, "Look, we understand that you are enthusiastic about chatting with us. Unfortunately, we are not very good at chatting.

So, if you wouldn’t mind, would you please leave us alone? We are not interested in chatting."

Once again, Evan was left silent for quite a while, before he revealed a faint smile and said, "It really doesn’t matter. If you don’t like chatting, we can just do something else. Maybe we can play some games, I know quite some that we can play even here.

That way, you can relax your minds better, right? I know, it is quite tiresome training like this. So, we can take this chance to relax our minds with a few funny games."

Kate: "???"

Lina: "..."

The two ladies this time, they understood that this guy was helpless. How could they even help him out, other than bluntly tell him?

"It is like this, we basically don’t want to interact with you. We feel that we share nothing in common, which is why we feel that there is no need to talk too deeply.

It is already enough that we have made acquaintances, so, there is no need to deepen the bond between us. Do you understand?" Lina spoke as though she was explaining to an elementary school kid.
