Chapter 460: Chapter 460 - Securing Basic Needs First

Since Andreas has already seen what I could do to improve the facilities of the camp, when I requested to see the reservoir and the water tanks, he did not have any second thoughts of agreeing to my request. After leaving the dining hall, he guided me straight to the east side of the camp which is nearest to the river.

Arriving at the area near the water tanks and reservoir, the first thing I saw were a lot of muscular men wearing only something similar to loin cloths. They seemed to be on their way to take a bath in the common bathing area. Well, I guess they did not get a memo about my visit since I don’t think this area was part of my original itinerary.

The people don’t seem to mind that they were wearing very little clothing on their bodies because all of them are men. As they saw me arrive, they scattered like ants, hiding behind anyhing they could find that can cover their bodies. Andreas immediately apologized because he forgot to tell me that the bathing area was here. He also told me that most men here are unmarried which is the reason why they panicked and hid their bodies from me.

I nodded to him once to acknowledge everything he said but still continued with the inspection. I placed some purification spells on the water tanks and also one huge purification rune at the bottom of the reservoir to keep the water clean. I ignored the men who were obviously still hiding nearby and continued walking towards the direction of the river. I walked along the side of the river, observing the area.

On my way back to the camp, I secretly made a small underground water tunnel and used hardened clay (it became brick-like after a few spells) to line the inside of it. I used it to guide the river water straight to the reservoir to remove the need for manual laborers just to fetch water from the river half a kilometer away. I’d rather that I use the labor to dig wells in areas farther from the reservoir instead.

I asked for a map of the camp from Andreas and told him that I suggested digging up wells. I marked certain areas on the map which he took note of. This project will have to be discussed with the other leaders during a meeting to follow protocols.

After the food and water is secured, I whispered to Andreas that I wanted to check the situation at the military barracks next. It is just me securing the three basic needs first at least. The colonel looked stunned with my request and for the first time he looked like he wanted to decline.

Well, I can’t blame him since he must have remembered how I saw the guys in loin cloths earlier. This is where their homes were so the men must be even more relaxed there. Who knows, someone may even walk around naked. I can see how nervous Andreas was for his soldiers.

I couldn’t help but chuckle and then say something to clear up any misunderstandings, "I am not going inside any of their rooms or tents to peek on people. I just want to observe the structures you have built as homes for the soldiers to check for any improvements we can do later on. Do most people still live on tents?"

He looked at me for almost a minute without saying anything as if he was gauging carefully as to how truthful my words were. I think, in his mind, he must be thinking that I will use my status to get whatever I want from this camp and its people.

After the longest minute, he sighed and replied, "Everybody still lives in a tent. When we came here, the construction materials are very limited so we prioritized building the basic facilities such as the dining, storage and medical ones. We also made sure the walls are sturdy enough. The soldiers understand this point and even the generals still live in tents."

I nodded my head and asked a follow up question, "Do you already have a building plan that you will follow once you have enough materials?"

He immediately replied, "The whole camp area has already been planned even before the first batch of soldiers were sent here. Only the construction materials are not enough to complete the entirety of it."

I asked him to show me the plan and he immediately ran back to get it. It only took a few minutes before he came back, carrying a stack of papers that are folded and crumpled in certain parts. I opened it carefully, ensuring that it won’t tear up.

As I looked onto the plan, I made a copy of it in my mind. I marked the places that have already been built and the structures that need to be prioritized for construction next. I told Andreas to take note that the urgent need to build a military barracks and recreational area for everyone. He nodded and wrote something on his memo pad.

I did not linger in the area since it is not like I am here for sight seeing. I asked Andreas to guide me to the medical facilities and call on the person who takes care of the medicine inventory. He hurriedly guided me to the place and asked one of the medics to call for the head of the hospital.

The person that came out was a nerdy looking man, probably in his late 20s or early 30s. He had a noble air in him but his face is all smiley, approachable and kind-looking. Andreas introduced him as Doctor Myron Sante. He indeed came from a noble family that has produced doctors for many generations.

I gave a firm nod to Doctor Sante and proceeded to what I came to the place for. We first visited the ones that were heavily injured. I asked everyone except Doctor Sante and Andreas to leave the room for a few minutes as I do my inspections and do my job to heal people. Everybody complied with an assuring nod from Doctor Sante.
