Insect Tamer's Ascension-Chapter 102: Basic strategies
After deducing what the letter was all about, Theo quickly made his way to the forest.
The earlier missions were very easy, and he wanted to be done with them.
According to Clara and the letter, a person was watching them from somewhere, yet what bewildered Theo was that they couldn't feel the presence at all.
This made Theo realize just how many proficient people were in the Barony aside from his family, attendants, and the head butler.
The mantis took care of the five slimes in a minute; Theo was fortunate enough to find a group of three and two solo found outside the clearing by the pup.
While the first mission was completed, it was only getting started.
The next mission was to bring an alive slime to the castle. While it was something Theo had never thought of doing, he had a simple idea in plan.
He had ordered a metallic square box from the barony and was surprised to hear that even such a random thing was present in the inventory.
The plan was simple, but there was only one part that Theo had some hesitance to play out.
He first met a level 2 moss slime outside a clearing, and then a single command of 'Spore Lash' made the slime loosen its body.
It was the first time Theo was moving very close to the slime, and Clara was not telling him to go back or be safe.
It made Theo realize that he had really grown out of that weak shell. He was still considered weak, but a level 3 human was much better than a level 0 one.
When the mantis made the slime loosen from the paralytic pores, Theo quickly yet calmly kept the square box with the opening facing the slime on the ground.
The slime was very close, and it was this part that Theo was hesitant about. He couldn't just smack the slime with hands or legs inside the box, it didn't work like that.
If he did that, his hand or leg would just go inside the body of the slime, and if it were to wake up, then Theo's limb was done for.
So, his simple idea was to use a hard and long stick, from one of the branches of the outskirts trees.
He could have brought something from the Barony this time too, yet waiting for everything made him realize that some things could be procured by himself too if he tried.
Theo just swung the stick horizontally at the near bottom slowly and made the slime slowly move from the ground.
The stick still went inside the slime, yet the dense liquid inside it still moved enough for it to go halfway into the box. Just like the whites of an egg when being poached.
Unfortunately, the slime woke up midway, feeling the new metallic surface touching its body. It hardened itself making it stuck halfway on the ground and halfway on the box.
It was then that the mantis used the spores again, yet this time, on its own. He moved to the back in safety, getting paralyzed at the same time as the slime would have been very dangerous.
When the slime was yet again all slurry, Theo just clenched his teeth and did the last of the work, and the slime was finally inside the box.
He quickly closed off the lid and heaved a sigh of relief.
Theo looked toward Clara for the first time and saw her smiling, It didn't feel like he had done something extravagant or used a strategy that stood out.
But sometimes, the more basic the plan, the easier and faster it was to execute.
With this, two of the missions were completed and Theo knew he would be getting those stars after reaching back in the castle.
He was still paranoid about whether the slime would have been able to melt its way outside the box, yet Theo stopped. He was comparing his unique beast with everyone.
Not all the beasts had the ability to munch on ores and eat them as if they were snacks, even if their digestive juices were very strong.
Theo kept the box near him while he decided which other missions to complete.
The missions helped him get the gist of things he had to know and do at his level or lower.
It was a small blueprint of sorts, and while his focus was still on reaching the next evolution for the mantis, the missions went hand in hand.
The next one, according to the systematic order, was easier than the capture one he had to do. It was to defeat a Thornhide Viper level 1 or above.
Yet another one was right below it, the named 'bonus tasks'.

These were tasks that were not mandatory and could be left behind, but if one were to do them, it was possible to get two yellow stars instead of the one.
Theo decided to complete two tasks at once to bag the three stars at once.
While one was to defeat a level 1 viper or above, the other was to defeat two or more vipers at once.
Theo went his way toward the viper territory in the carriage, and this time, left the box of slime with Warren to take care of.
He went to his same old clearing and the boar helped clean out all the grass around.
It was the first time that Theo spotted a viper without the pup going anywhere, a viper was dangling by the lower branch of a tall tree.
Its colour was matching with the branch's yet there was still a bit of difference for Theo to know.
The pup went near the tree and growled toward the viper and seeing that it was the same level as it, the viper confidently slathered it's way down the tree in quick pace.
The pup came back slowly to the clearing with its award-winning acting. Theo decided to reward it some more powdered ore that was good for it's health when they get back.
The mantis was looking at the interaction with it's head twitching, Theo only felt a Stream of emotion for a second before it stopped.
It was happening more often now as their bond was getting better.
The mantis was feeing a craving to fight it and without Theo giving any command; it hopped off his shoulder and went on his camouflage routine.
The poor viper didn't even know what was waiting for it and just when it entered the clearing, it's head got cleanly cut by the mantis.
Theo shook his head as the head of the viper fell to the ground, the mantis had become terrifyingly strong for his own size and lower level.
A thing that should not be happening in this world. It made Theo get a lot of theories in mind that made him excited, yet he focused on the mission for now.
It was then that the difficult part started, it was tough to get two vipers at the same time because of their nature.
The vipers always moved solo; there was not once that Theo saw two together.
They had to improvise and, for some reason, Clara was not giving him any ideas.
She wasn't even engaging in his brainstorming sessions.
Theo thought about for a while before he planned on something.
It was yet another simple one, yet in his mind; it was already successful.
Under Theo's order, Clara sent the pup to retrieve yet another one of the vipers.
And this time, they had data in hand that even the pup knew. Clara only had to give the pup a command to not bring a big one like before if it started following it.
Theo didn't want to fight another level 5 or 6 one right now.
When the pup came back, there was a level 2 viper near its tail, Theo only sighed in relief and made the mantis move in front of it, there was no camouflage in his plan this time.
When the viper sensed the level 4 being that was smaller than it in front, it went on guard and moved it's tail near it's face to smack the mantis away.
Theo was betting on that, the vipers were not that intelligent, but even they could realize when a being was a lot higher than their level.
While the pup went to procure another one, mantis kept looking at the viper with it's twitching body.
It was to the point that Theo had to give it commands every few seconds just to be sure that a single attack won't just fail his whole plan.
The viper didn't more even the slightest bit for the whole time, its eyes were stuck at the mantis who was unfazed.
A minute later, Theo heard another rustling of the grass, and he was satisfied; the forest was bustling with vipers.
When the pup came back, there was yet another viper near its tail; it was a level 3 viper.
Theo only grinned at its arrival; only a single command was needed now, and it was all over.
