Chapter 109: Chapter 107: Your Boyfriend?

"Cousin, I was just about to look for you. How coincidental that you’ve returned. I heard you were injured, and I was so worried that I hurried to your office to ask about you, and now I’ve come to find you." As soon as Tangyu and Song Qingyu got out of the car, a voice came over, and a figure swiftly approached them, arriving in front of Song Qingyu. Seeing the man before her, Song Qingyu’s brows furrowed slightly, with a flash of displeasure in her eyes. It was apparent that she was not very fond of this cousin.

Tangyu also sized up the newcomer, who seemed to be nearing thirty, dressed flamboyantly and still trying to look like a young man. He had a crew cut, and one could vaguely see tattoos on his body.

Moreover, there was something about his flickering gaze that always seemed to suggest ulterior motives. He had an air of ruffianism, and one glance was enough to tell that he might be some good-for-nothing street thug. Seeing his sly eyes scanning Song Qingyu up and down, Tangyu felt somewhat annoyed.

It seemed that this cousin was actually harboring intentions toward Song Qingyu. How could anyone else set their sights on the woman he admired?

"Liu Ming, how did you find this place? Who told you where I live?" Song Qingyu asked with a stern face.

"Of course, it was your colleague who told me. But let’s not worry about that. Why are you so resistant to me, cousin? I’m genuinely concerned about your health. I’ve come all this way just to see you," Liu Ming said.

"Thank you for your concern, but I’m fine now. I have things to do, so you should go back now. Give my regards to Aunt and Uncle," Song Qingyu replied coolly, clearly showing a degree of disgust and guard against this Liu Ming.

"Cousin, you don’t look well at all. How about I take you to the hospital for a thorough check-up? I won’t be at ease otherwise," Liu Ming said, attempting to grab Song Qingyu’s hand, but she dodged it.

"I told you I’m fine, and I really have things to do," Song Qingyu said.

"Why do you have to dislike and avoid me so much, cousin? I am, after all, your cousin. Why must you be so cold to me? I’m just here to care for you out of kindness. Can kindness only be treated with ingratitude? I’m already downstairs; can’t you invite me up for a moment? I’ll just have a glass of water and then leave," Liu Ming said.

"There are other girls at home, so it’s not convenient," Song Qingyu responded icily.

Liu Ming pursed his lips in annoyance.

Seeing Liu Chen persisting in his unwelcome advances, Tangyu couldn’t help but step forward a few paces to stand beside Song Qingyu, shielding her halfway before turning to Liu Ming. "Qingyu is still recovering and should not be overly agitated or talk too much. She does not welcome you into her home, so please have the decency to leave. A man should keep a little dignity," he said.

Liu Ming, already in a bad mood, focused his anger on Tangyu upon seeing him intervene. A cold light flashed in his eyes, his face revealing a hint of menace as he stared at Tangyu. "Who are you? This is between my cousin and me; it’s none of your business. Stay out of it and don’t provoke me. Cousin, is this one of your subordinates? He has no manners at all," he said.

Song Qingyu huffed in displeasure.

"No need to bother with him, Qingyu. Let’s go upstairs," Tangyu said.

This incensed Liu Ming even more. He tried to block Tangyu’s way, glaring angrily. "Who are you? Without clarifying that, don’t even think about leaving."

"Hmph, what does my identity have to do with you? Move aside," Tangyu said with a cold, dismissive laugh. It seems there’s no shortage of toads these days. So what if he’s her cousin—does that give him the right to make a move on my girl?

"Liu Ming, stop causing trouble. What’s wrong with my boyfriend coming to care for me? Does that concern you? If you keep this up, don’t blame me for not recognizing you as a cousin anymore. I don’t need you meddling in my affairs. Please leave," Song Qingyu said coldly, and then she took Tangyu’s hand and they headed upstairs. Watching their retreating figures, Liu Ming’s expression turned sinister. His fists clenched tightly, his teeth gritted in rage.

He had always liked Song Qingyu and had even tried to pursue her, but she had always rebuffed him with a cold face.

Being led by the hand by Song Qingyu felt nice. Her hand was soft and smooth, like it lacked bones. It was the second time a beauty had used him as a shield, and he found the experience not too bad. However, Tangyu was now hoping it could turn into something formal.

After they went upstairs, Song Qingyu let go of Tangyu’s hand. "Sorry, Tangyu, things were a bit urgent just now, so—"

Tangyu gave a wry smile. "Haha, no problem at all. If you’re willing to admit that I’m your boyfriend, I’m more than happy. I’m very willing to be your boyfriend."

"Uh—"

"You’re not taking it seriously, are you?" Song Qingyu looked slightly stunned.

Looking at Song Qingyu, Tangyu said earnestly, "What do you mean, Qingyu? Are you saying you were just joking with me earlier?"

"Uh, that—I—" Song Qingyu didn’t quite know how to respond at that moment.

Seeing Song Qingyu flustered, Tangyu curled his lips and said with a smile, "Just kidding, I know I’m just a shield, but it’s not a bad feeling."

Song Qingyu looked at Tangyu without saying anything.

"By the way, Qingyu, is that Liu Ming really your cousin? It seems like you really hate him," Tangyu asked.

At the mention of Liu Ming, a flicker of anger crossed Song Qingyu’s eyes as she said, "He’s sort of my cousin. His mom is a distant relative on my mom’s side, so we’re not closely related, not even by blood. After I came to work in Donglin City, I only found out from my mom that we had such a relative here. Last year when my parents came to visit me, we had a meal with them, and that’s how I acknowledged the relation. Since then, Liu Ming took a liking to me, started off by using the cousin title to get close to me, inviting me out for meals and whatnot."

"I knew of his intentions, but I felt too embarrassed to refuse at that time, so I went out with him a few times. I found out that he just got bolder and more presumptuous, trying to take advantage of me on several occasions, so I started hating him more and more. Besides, he’s an uneducated wastrel and a lowlife, always hanging out with all kinds of shady people. Whenever he took me out, he’d make those hoodlums think I was his girlfriend, which pissed me off. I already detest gangsters, so my repulsion for him only grew. To make matters worse, he’s still pestering me relentlessly, to the point that I now avoid going to my distant aunt’s house and often have to avoid him."

"Oh, I see, he doesn’t seem like a good guy at all. People like that ought to be kept at a distance," Tangyu nodded and commented.

"Exactly, if it wasn’t for the fact he’s my cousin, I would’ve set him straight long ago," Song Qingyu said.

The two reached their floor; Song Qingyu lived on the fourth floor, which, for a mid-rise building, was a pretty good location. Song Qingyu took out her keys to open the door, but as soon as she inserted them, the door was flung open, and a figure bounded out.

She looked to be in her early twenties, quite tall, though her presence seemed ordinary. Her clothes and appearance were just as average. Of course, that was by Tangyu’s standards. Honestly, the girl in front of him wasn’t bad-looking at all; she would be considered quite a beauty in the eyes of most people.

There was still a bit of youthful naivety on her face, clearly indicating she was a young girl who had just stepped out of university and was yet to be seasoned by society.

"Qingyu, you’re back! You’re home early today. Eh, Qingyu, is this your boyfriend? Hehe." The girl giggled and curiously looked Tangyu up and down. She knew Song Qingyu well; not even female friends were brought home, let alone a male. The first time bringing a guy home and the couple seemed quite sweet together—she couldn’t help but think in that direction.

Besides, Qingyu was not getting any younger; having a boyfriend over would be normal and something to be happy about, right?

"Shanshan, what nonsense are you spouting? He’s a friend. I’m sick, so he brought me back home," Song Qingyu chided softly.

"Ah, Qingyu, you’re sick? Is everything okay?" Wen Shanshan immediately asked with concern.

Song Qingyu shook her head and replied, "I’m fine now, don’t block the doorway. Aren’t you going to let us in?"

"Hehe, I got a bit excited. Come in, Qingyu, and you too," Wen Shanshan said with a chuckle, yet her eyes lingered on Tangyu again. Even if he was not her boyfriend, their interaction was surely intimate. And since Song Qingyu was feeling fine despite being sick, why did she need someone to accompany her home? Wen Shanshan couldn’t believe there wasn’t something going on. She eyed Tangyu with a trace of interest.

"Hi handsome, my name is Wen Shanshan, and you can call me Shanshan or little sister Shanshan if you like," Wen Shanshan introduced herself with her lively nature and sweet voice, as she reached out her hand.

Tangyu smiled and shook her hand, saying, "Hi little sister, I’m Tangyu."

"Giggle, I thought you’d call me beauty. Am I not pretty at all?" Wen Shanshan asked. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"Alright, Shanshan, stop scaring the guest. Go get some fruit and pour some water," Song Qingyu looked back, aware of Wen Shanshan teasing Tangyu.

"Okay, okay, then you two have a seat. I won’t get in your way," Wen Shanshan said. Then she walked off to the kitchen; her use of the word ’disturbance’ had a hint of suggestiveness. Song Qingyu could only shake her head at Wen Shanshan’s unabashed words.

"Sorry about that, Tangyu. She’s just like that, no malice intended, just making a joke," Song Qingyu explained.

Tangyu laughed, "Not at all, I think she’s quite cute, and joking around like that is pretty good, keeps things lively."

"Oh, if you don’t mind, then that’s good. Make yourself comfortable," Song Qingyu said.

"Fruit’s here!" Wen Shanshan came out of the kitchen with a plate of fruit, poured two glasses of water for Tangyu and Song Qingyu, and set the plate in front of them. She smiled at both and said, "It’s broad daylight, so I’m sure you won’t need me, the human-sized spotlight, around. I’ll go to my room and surf the internet, not to disturb you. Feel free, pretend I don’t exist. I’ll wear headphones and won’t hear anything, no matter the noise. Bye!" With that, Wen Shanshan dashed to her room, leaving Song Qingyu, her face flushed, glaring silently, "That brat, she’s getting out of line. It’s not like that between us."

Tangyu merely smiled. Though Wen Shanshan might not be strikingly beautiful, she was quite interesting—a lively girl still carrying a hint of youthful shyness was a rarity and certainly amusing.

Of course, Song Qingyu’s bashful demeanor had its own charm.
