Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Arriving at the Destination

(Author’s Note: The stats for the Mutated Zombie in this Chapter are correct. The established rule is that Mutated Zombies can only be fought using Mecha. A Mecha’s combat power is influenced by its pilot’s Superpower.)

After confirming Lin Xinghai’s Superpower, Fang Tianhe gave the order to move out immediately, as time was of the essence.

Lin Xinghai thought it was a real shame. After all, quite a few zombies had come to interfere during his breakthrough, and all of them had been killed.

A quick glance revealed there were over thirty of them!

What he needed most right now was Blood Qi Power. Without it, he always felt a little uneasy.

But no matter what, he couldn’t very well voice that reason.

In the end, he could only obey the order and set out with the team once more.

Back in the car, Lin Xinghai had a relaxing time, occasionally shooting a zombie or two. He used the quiet moment to continue contemplating that mysterious and profound Perception Power of his.

He soon discovered another wonderful use for his Perception Power: it could detect zombies in advance!

Basically, whenever a zombie appeared within a hundred meters, he could sense it. The only problem was that he couldn’t determine their numbers or location.

However, he could roughly judge a zombie’s strength. The feeling he got from an Ordinary Zombie was completely different from that of a High Level Zombie.

"Brother Yang, your Genetic Optimization Level is higher than mine. Can your Perception Power be used like a weaker version of a Zombie Detector?" Lin Xinghai couldn’t help but ask.

"How could that be possible! For people like us, who have only broken the first Genetic Lock, the Perception Power we generate can at most assist in close combat. We’re lucky if it can sense an enemy’s killing blow in advance so we can dodge."

"If you want to use Perception Power to detect zombies, you need to have broken at least the third Genetic Lock. Only our Commander and Vice-Commander can do that."

"But even then, their perception range is no more than 100 meters, and it’s an extremely vague sense at that," Qin Yang patiently explained to Lin Xinghai.

Lin Xinghai: ’???’

’Good thing I didn’t reveal anything,’ he thought, sighing in relief while also feeling a little excited.

According to what Qin Yang said, his current Perception Power was nearly on par with that of an expert who had broken the third Genetic Lock.

’This probably has something to do with spending 100 points of Blood Qi Power on my breakthrough.’

Since he couldn’t continue the conversation about Perception Power, Lin Xinghai shifted the topic to Superpowers.

And as always, Qin Yang’s explanation was patient. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Lin Xinghai soon learned that Superpowers were divided into three major categories.

Basic Superpowers, Ordinary Superpowers, and Rare Superpowers.

The so-called Basic Superpowers are those that enhance one’s Basic Attributes.

His Speed Superpower, Roger’s Giant Strength Superpower, and Wu Yan’s Rock Transformation Superpower could all be considered Basic Superpowers.

Meanwhile, Shen Han’s Celestial Frost Superpower was considered an Ordinary Superpower.

Only Xu Haishui’s Werewolf Transformation Superpower and Fang Tianhe’s Heaven-Splitting Superpower were considered Rare Superpowers.

It was worth noting that the line between Ordinary and Rare Superpowers was actually quite blurry; it mainly came down to their destructive power.

If Shen Han’s Celestial Frost Superpower were powerful enough, no one would argue if you called it a Rare Superpower.

But unfortunately, even when amplified by a Mecha, her Superpower could only freeze a Mutated Zombie for an instant—less than half a second—let alone inflict any significant damage.

...

Just as Lin Xinghai was listening with rapt attention, the convoy came to a halt under Fang Tianhe’s command.

"What’s wrong?" Lin Xinghai was instantly on alert. However, neither his Perception Power nor the Zombie Detector had picked up anything unusual.

"The Commander probably wants to leave the Armored Corpse here," Qin Yang said.

"Huh? Why bring it all the way out here?" Lin Xinghai asked, confused.

"The surface is a wasteland. Do you know how zombies survive? They eat anything, including the corpses of their own kind."

"And to other zombies, the corpse of a Mutated Zombie is a great delicacy."

"The smell of blood is thick back where we just fought. It’s bound to attract a large horde of zombies. If we hide the Mutated Zombie’s corpse there, the chances of it being discovered are much higher."

"The zombie population is noticeably thinner around here, making it a good hiding spot. Come on, let’s get out and help," Qin Yang explained as he jumped out of the vehicle.

Lin Xinghai quickly followed. By then, Fang Tianhe had already used his Mecha to place the Armored Corpse on the ground.

The other Mercenaries gathered around it. Holding white spray bottles, they began to spray something onto the zombie’s body.

"It’s a plastic spray. When the mist makes contact with an object, it rapidly adheres to it and forms a plastic film. This seals in all the odors from the corpse." Qin Yang explained before Lin Xinghai even had to ask.

Lin Xinghai nodded. He could see that everyone present was well-practiced in this task.

They coordinated with one another, spraying different parts of the body. Even though the Armored Corpse was enormous, they would likely be finished in under a minute.

Others went to pry open the door of a nearby warehouse. It was clear the Armored Corpse was going to be stored inside.

As Lin Xinghai drew closer, he looked at the massive corpse, which was taller than him even while lying down, and felt an inexplicable sense of pressure.

The keratinous layer covering its body looked uneven and rough, but a closer inspection revealed that every single protrusion was exceptionally sharp and pointy.

One could only imagine that fighting this behemoth in close quarters without a Mecha would be like facing a giant hedgehog—there would be nowhere to even land a blow.

And while the Armored Corpse was famous for its defense, that didn’t mean it lacked Attack Power. Its half-meter-long Sharp Claws were the best proof of that.

The more Lin Xinghai looked, the more alarmed he became. He felt that this Mutated Zombie was terrifying, and this wasn’t just his imagination.

As he drew closer, his Perception Power continuously warned him that if this thing were alive, a single swipe of its claws could take his life.

Suddenly, an idea struck Lin Xinghai. He opened his system panel, wanting to use his Investigation Technique on the Armored Corpse.

’But could the Investigation Technique even be used on a corpse?’

As it turned out, the system was quite reliable.

The next moment, information appeared on the system panel.

Name: Armored Corpse

Physique: 1083

Power: 872

Speed: 631

Note: Its thick keratinous layer mitigates 50% of incoming damage.

Lin Xinghai sucked in a sharp breath.

He read the stats over and over, confirming that he hadn’t misread a single digit. Any trace of smugness he’d been feeling vanished without a trace.

He now had a much clearer understanding of what the apocalypse truly meant.

If humanity didn’t have Mecha, they would be utterly powerless against these Mutated Zombies.

For a while, Lin Xinghai neither helped nor left.

He just stood there in a daze, watching the others work.

Once the Armored Corpse was covered in the plastic film, moved into the warehouse, and the door was welded shut, the task was complete.

The team set off again, moving at a noticeably faster pace.

But for the rest of the journey, Lin Xinghai simply sat in silence inside the all-terrain vehicle.

Qin Yang found this a little strange, but he didn’t press the matter.

After all, Lin Xinghai had just had his breakthrough and awakened a Superpower. He was probably just taking the time to process his new state.

The team drove on for another twenty minutes or so before finally reaching their destination.

An intact, oval-shaped building appeared in their field of vision.

On the outer wall, the words "Spacecraft Research Institute" glittered under the sunlight.

"We’re here!"
