Is It Weird for a Guy to Apply to a Witch School?-Chapter 17 - New School, New Life
After we left the cafeteria, Bai Yu offered to show me around, but I turned her down.
Strolling around aimlessly didn’t really appeal to me yet.
Maybe even after turning into a girl, I hadn’t unlocked that hidden shopping gene some people seemed to have?
Since I passed on the idea, Bai Yu didn’t push it. After all, shopping’s basically just spending money, or at least that’s how I saw it. And I didn’t want her shelling out more cash on my account.
So, she came up with a different plan.
The academy’s huge, sprawling across way too much ground to explore in one go, and some spots are a serious hike from each other.
Thankfully, there’s a bus system with fixed routes running through the campus. Otherwise, imagine living hours away from the classrooms—how’s anyone supposed to make it to class?
Transportation’s a must, and Bai Yu wanted me to check it out with her.
Naturally, I had to ask: “Hey, Sister Bai, don’t witches just ride brooms or something? Why bother with a bus when you’ve got that?”
Her answer was straight to the point. “First off, brooms are alchemical gear. A decent one will cost you A LOT—some of the fancy ones go for insane prices. Bottom line? I can’t afford it.”
Even the cheap, no-frills brooms for getting around weren’t exactly in my budget either.
“Then there’s the other catch: you don’t just buy a broom and hop on. It’s a skill thing—like how you can’t ride a bike without practice.
Plus, you need a flight license, complete with rules and regulations, kind of like traffic laws. Break them, and you’re stuck with fines.”
That combo punched my broom-riding dreams right in the face.
Back in my old life, getting a driver’s license was a nightmare—especially the written test.
I aced the driving part every time, but the theory? Failed it more times than I’d like to admit.
A flight license comes with its own theory exam, too, and just thinking about it gave me a headache.
Still, it didn’t kill my dream of flying. I’d take it slow, and grind it out. I wasn't exactly the type to speed-race a broom anyway—I’m a law-abiding citizen through and through.
Kind of like how I got my driver’s license last life and then barely touched a car.
Plus… riding the bus didn’t sound half bad. Bai Yu mentioned the Witch School’s buses were free, and what’s better than free?
The bus wasn’t crowded—well, not many seniors were on board, anyway.
Here at the Witch School, it’s all gorgeous upperclassmen. You either call them “Senior” or “Professor,” and honestly, that’s the vibe. No complaints from me.
As for where Bai Yu and I were headed? My new place, of course. The spot listed on my room card: Number 62, Block 2, Newbie District.
She wasn’t kidding about the distance. When I checked the map, my place was way out on the edge, miles from the central teaching area.
The bus ride took forever.
“This is it?” I asked, a little thrown off. The housing here wasn’t what I’d pictured at all.
I’d expected some big apartment building with assigned units. But nope—the Witch School was loaded.
Number 62, Block 2, Newbie District? A freaking standalone villa.
And this was free?
I took a step back, staring at Bai Yu like she’d just pulled a prank. “Wait, seriously? This is it?”
“What’s wrong? Yup, this is the place.” She gave me a little nudge from behind, grinning. “Come on.”
“But… the academy’s just handing this out?” I pointed at the house, still skeptical. “There’s no way I’ve got to pay for this, right? I’d rather crash in some beat-up dorm than deal with rent.”
“Nah, relax—it’s free. Though, you’re not getting this whole place to yourself. It’s big enough for, like, five or six people, maybe ten tops. Enrollment’s been kinda light this year, so it probably won’t be packed.”
“Oh, so it’s not just mine?”
Hearing that, I let out a relieved breath. The no-rent part was honestly the biggest win.
But still—living here? It felt way too good to be true.
“Of course,” Bai Yu chimed in, her tone teasing as she leaned closer. “Just make sure you keep it together once your housemates show up. I mean, your ‘gear’ for causing trouble is long gone now, right?”
“Hey, I know that!” I shot back, rolling my eyes. “Geez, I’m pure as they come. Even with a girlfriend, I’m still a virgin.”
Technically, that’s two lifetimes of virginity now.
How depressing.
But whatever—it’s not a big deal. Add up both lives, and I’m no spring chicken.
Didn’t someone say staying single for 30 years turns you into a wizard? Sure, I’m a witch now, and my combined age blows past 30, but close enough, right?
“Oh?” Bai Yu’s ears perked up when I mentioned my girlfriend. “So, you still haven’t won over that little lady of yours?”
“Nope, not a chance,” I said with a shrug. “Look at my status—then look at hers. She’s on track to be a star student at Elf School. If I hadn’t landed at Witch School, I’d probably be scraping by at some no-name academy.”
I pursed my lips, but I didn’t hold any grudge against her. She earned her spot, and honestly, she’s the one who made me feel like I couldn’t keep up.
We broke up amicably, I guess. Amicable as in: I didn’t see her, she didn’t see me, no fights, no drama. Peaceful, right?
“If you want,” Bai Yu said suddenly, her voice snapping me out of my thoughts, “I could try luring your ex over to the Witch School.”
“What? No, no, no—pass!” I waved my hands frantically. “That’s a terrible idea. I’d feel awful about it, and if she found out, I’d just be asking for trouble. Even if you dragged her here, there’s no way we’d get back together.”
“You sure?” Her lips twitched into a faint smirk—barely noticeable, like maybe even she didn’t realize it.
“Dead sure,” I said firmly. “I don’t want to run into her here. That’d be awkward as hell, even if she wouldn’t recognize me now.”
“Alright then.” Bai Yu grabbed my hand and tugged me toward the house. “Come on, let’s head in. See what number you are in this place.”
“Okay.” I swiped my room card over the sensor, and with a soft click, the door unlocked.
It felt surreal. Knowing I’d be living here from now on? Suddenly, the whole school-life thing started looking a lot brighter.

Praise the Witch School!
I could say that now without a shred of guilt. I’m an easy sell—toss some perks my way, and I’m sold.
Pushing the door open, we stepped into the entryway.
It was a spot for swapping shoes, with pristine hardwood floors stretching inside.
Then, out of the corner, something round and flat glided toward us—slow and silent.
“What’s that?” I asked, squinting at it. Looked like one of those robot vacuums.
“It’s the house’s smart butler,” Bai Yu said, stepping forward to inspect it. “Some kind of alchemical gadget.”
“A smart butler? Alchemical?” I couldn’t help but laugh. “You sure it’s not just a fancy Roomba?”
“Greetings, new master! Welcome home~”
The thing piped up in a cheery voice, and I jumped a little. Okay, smart butler it was—greeting me and everything?
“I also handle cleaning duties,” it continued. “So, yes, I suppose I’m a bit like an autonomous vacuum bot—but with way more features! Would you like a rundown of my functions, or perhaps check the manual yourself?”
“Uh, no, no—that’s fine,” I said quickly, waving it off. Knowing what it was was enough for now. I wasn’t exactly dying to geek out over it.
Translator's note:
This whole driver's license thing is just too real! I live in China, and ten years ago, I got my license.
Over here, getting a license means passing four tests—two computer Q&A sessions and two on-road practical exams. It takes at least three months.
When my dad learned to drive in his forties, he was a bit impatient, so it took him over ten months to get his license.
As for me, after getting my license, I went to grad school, then started working, but I didn’t have the money to buy a car. So, for the past ten years, I haven’t even touched a steering wheel—ha! Exactly like what the author wrote.
By the way, “If you’re still a virgin at 30, you become a wizard” is actually the title of a Japanese drama. It was super popular in mainland China. The original title is "30歳まで童貞だと魔法使いになれるらしい."
