King of the Wilderness-Chapter 114 - 109: Officer Kage Visits
That night, they didn’t return to the rented cabin but chose to stay in the warm tent instead.
Lin Yu’an needed to quickly adapt to the day-night rhythms of this land, while David and Mike were driven by a strong creative impulse, wanting to capture every moment here.
With the slight crackle of the stove and the howling wind outside the tent, the three of them crawled into their warm sleeping bags and lay on the camp beds.
Before falling asleep, David’s mind kept replaying the scenes he saw during the day.
He had a premonition that this Alaskan journey would be more exciting than any reality show he had ever directed!
The next morning, as the day just barely started to break, Lin Yu’an was the first to wake up.
He checked the nearly extinguished stove and added more firewood to renew the warmth in the tent.
Then he quietly stepped out of the tent; the morning air outside was still a bit chilly.
When David and Mike were awakened by the aroma of coffee brewing in the pot, Lin Yu’an had already surveyed around the campsite once.
"Good morning."
Lin Yu’an handed each of them a steaming cup of instant coffee.
After a simple breakfast of bread, the three of them went to the chosen site for the cabin, selected by Lin Yu’an.
This was a relatively flat area with the highest terrain.
Lin Yu’an did not rush to start any machinery; he found a long measuring tape and a spool of thread from the pile of supplies.
Curious about these items, David asked, "Lin, what are you doing with these?"
"Today, our first task is to determine the foundation."
"Before using any heavy equipment, I need to know exactly where I’m building the house, how big it will be, and its orientation."
"Accurate marking can prevent all unnecessary troubles later on."
Lin Yu’an forcefully drove a wooden stake into the frozen ground as the first reference point.
He had David hold one end of the measuring tape, and began measuring the length and width of the cabin according to the dimensions he had sketched in his notebook yesterday.
"Let’s first outline the main house."
"Front width, twelve meters; side depth, eight meters."
"This is a relatively compact but highly functional size, enough to accommodate all core functional areas."
As he spoke, he quickly marked out a clear rectangle using stakes and string.
"Now let’s determine the orientation and right angles of the house."
"The main light-facing side is towards the south to maximize use of precious winter sunlight. The main door should avoid the northerly wind direction to reduce heat loss."
David looked at the rectangle and compared it with the design diagram in his mind: "Lin, this rectangle seems simpler than your drawing. What about the small side room and fireplace location you designed?"
"That’s the next step. I must position the main structure first, then plan to add additional parts based on this foundation."
Saying this, he walked to one side of the main house’s rectangle and picked up the measuring tape and stakes again.
"Now, the side wing, it extends out four meters from the main house wall with a width of five meters."
Using the same meticulous method, he quickly marked out a smaller rectangle beside the main house, and the two together formed a clear "L" shaped foundation layout.
Lin Yu’an then moved to the other side of the L-shaped layout and measured again.
In the predetermined wall position, he marked out a three-meter-square independently protruding area.
"This will be the base for the fireplace and chimney."
He tapped the center of the area with his foot: "I intend to build a huge stone fireplace, its foundation, and chimney must be as sturdy as the main house’s foundation."
"From the start, it must be planned separately to ensure it can bear weight independently and won’t affect the main house’s structure."
Finally, a complex shape consisting of the main house, side wing, and chimney base was clearly outlined by the strings, with its distinctive contours.
Lin Yu’an also marked with stakes the positions of the main support columns for the porch at the front of the house.
For the first time, the complete outline of this home’s footprint was imprinted on the land.
David sincerely exclaimed, "So professional, Lin! No wonder you’re a mechanical engineering graduate; you’ve considered every step thoroughly."
He had Mike carefully record this complex outline diagram with all its details; he knew these hardcore elements were what the audience wanted to see.
With the surveying work completed, the task of clearing the foundation was officially put on the agenda.
David looked at the area covered with snow and shrubs, asking, "Alright, Lin, now we must face reality."
"This area is so large, clearing it by manpower alone is impossible. Do you have a good plan?"
Lin Yu’an had a slight smile on his face as he walked towards the "mountain of supplies."
"My plan is this."
With the two of them looking on in confusion, he pulled back another large waterproof tarp covering the core area of the supplies.
Under the tarp, a yellow "little beast" full of steel might appeared!
It was the Xu Gong XC760K skid-steer loader!
"WTF... My god! You brought a mini excavator!"
David’s exclamation almost tore through the sky as he rushed forward and looked at the brand-new machine like it was a piece of artwork.
"I thought the tricycle was crazy enough, but you also hid an excavator! Lin! How did you do it?"
A tricycle might still be understood, but a genuine heavy engineering machine appearing in this isolated place completely turned his world upside down.
