Madam Feng decided that enough tattle telling had been done. Things like things could start out funny but they always left bruised hearts in there path.

"Hua Qi cheese cake and other flavors have arrived." she shouted.

It was a clever distraction and it worked. They had all been clamoring for cake when they arrived. She led them to the living room where cakes of various varieties were waiting on a trolley.

Maids pushed in more trolleys with tea pots, cups, other snacks and everything that was necessary for a tea party. They forgot about Mei Mei, leaving her behind in the foyer.

Mei Mei shook her head. Had they come for her or Hua Qi’s cakes? None the less, she was grateful that the reunion had ended so simply. Nobody had complicated things for her or blamed her.

She picked up the shoe box and decided to put it away. She would distribute the shoes later to avoid being accused of unfairness. If she gave one person a gift right now, everyone would want one.

She called Chen mama over and handed her the box. "Chen mama, put this somewhere until our guests are gone. And make sure that the maids clean all of the rooms because knowing my family, some of them will be staying back. I am afraid that we are going to have a full house from now on."

Chen mama was beaming with happiness. "It is a good thing to have a full house young madam. We are glad to have something to do other than sit around. The madam is happy that her good cups and plates finally have some use."

"Until her fine china starts to break. First come the humans and then come the pets." Mei Mei could see the chaos coming from a mile away.

General Big Yellow ran past them at the exact moment. On his heels was Noodles. He kept trying to make peace and she was not in a forgiving mood.

"Now why can’t he leave her alone?" Mei Mei asked her.

She heard the sound of cutlery falling to the ground and closed her eyes. Ten seconds later, General Big Yellow run out of the house, barking loudly and a hissing cat followed him.

"Do you think they will be alright Chen mama?" She asked, worried that Noodles might kill her dog husband.

"Cats and dogs fight all the time, its in their nature young madam." Chen mama answered.

"Has my daughter gone to school?" She asked.

Chen mama shook her head. "She went out for a run with the young master and the Imperial commander. I am not certain that the young miss can keep up with the grown men. They are not yet back and I don’t think the young miss will be going to school today. I overheard madam Su Manchu saying that she had been reported in as sick for the day."

Mei Mei guessed that it was Jingzhe and Mingzhe’s idea. With the crying Mingzhu had done the night before, they had decided that she needed the day off. She gestured for Chen mama to leave and return to her duties. She decided to go to the kitchen and see about the refreshments as she was the hostess of the house.

Before she could get far, Chi Zhenzhu kidnapped her and pulled her out of the house, leading her to the small gardens. Zhenzhu waved at Go Go Squid and then pulled Mei Mei to sit down on the garden chair.

Mei Mei stretched her hands out to catch some sunlight. "Zhenzhu, why did you drag me out? Please don’t tell me that you want to confess another crime?"

"No, I pulled you out so that we can talk." Zhenzhu said, "Cousin, I just wanted you to know that if you need to talk, my ears are open. If you need hugs, my arms are open. I know that everyone thinks you were stupid to marry Mo Liang and I do too.

But, this doesn’t mean your love for him was not sincere. Your feelings were true and he has let you down in ways so rotten that your heart is sure to be broken. I don’t know what anyone else has told you but Mei Mei, it is okay to be sad.

I know that you are sad."

She tried to hug Mei Mei but Mei Mei pushed her away gently. "I am not sad Zhenzhu and that is what makes me sad."

Zhenzhu had a cough, she covered her mouth and coughed into her hand twice. Then, she looked at Mei Mei, waiting for an elaboration on her thoughts.

Mei looked up at the sky, recalling some moments from the past. Like when Mo Liang bought her ice cream that cost three yuan. It was the cheapest ice cream she had ever eaten and yet when she thought that she was in love, it was the best tasting ice cream in the world.

Then, she recalled some of the worst moments in their marriage, his coldness, emotional abuse, financial ignorance and more. On top of it all, the unfaithfulness.

"I am sad because when after I realized that I did not love him anymore and I had not for many years, it hit me that I had wasted so many years on him. My entire youth was sucked away by a leech.

What was I thinking all this while Zhenzhu? He stole the warmth and sunshine from me. Mingzhu’s joy was sucked away by him. He left emotional scars on my baby..." She veered into silent sobs and buried her head in her hands.

Zhenzhu was about to hug Mei Mei when two shadows appeared in over them. Great grandma Jun and Su Manchu had come outside for some reason and they happened to overhear Mei Mei’s sad words.

All three women hugged Mei Mei, two on each side and one from behind.

Great grandma Jun said softly, "You silly girl, you have always been naive and spoiled. After the fire you latched onto Mo Liang like a clutch. What you suffered is the same as what kidnapped victims go through when they become attached to their kidnappers."

"Stockholm syndrome." Chi Zhenzhu shared.

"Yes," Su Manchu said in agreement. "But that is all over now. You and Mingzhu are free, you have a business and your new boyfriend is a billionaire. Your life is just beginning."

"The sun is shining and your warmth is returning." Zhenzhu said. "It sounds like the line of a song. Maybe we should invite your neighbor Tangning over so that she can sing that line to you over and over until you believe it."

Zhenzhu broke into a rendition of a made up song, singing those exact lines. She had the singing voice of a bullfrog in distress.

The geese cried in distress and protest.

Miss Strawberry turned and run back into the house.

Go Go Squid decided to climb up a tree to get away from them. Never had the tortoise moved so fast.

"Now I know why the soldiers at the base run when you show up for karaoke night." Su Manchu let go of Mei Mei and covered her ears.

Mei Mei guffawed and then they heard a woman’s scream.
