Landlord in the Arctic-Chapter 56: Rescue
As expected, Feng Shan and Nash took out the entire flock of Thunderbirds.
After the Witchcraft Bone Ring absorbed the Soul Power, the two of them packed up the Thunderbirds and returned to camp.
In reality, there were plenty of other animals in Moonlight Forest, like bobcats, grouse, wolverines, martens, and moose. If he used his grass rope for divination, he could probably even find a brown bear.
But in Feng Shan’s view, hunting was for filling your stomach, not for wanton slaughter or just for the sake of hunting.
They returned to camp with their haul.
Feng Shan put away his Hunting Bow and unstrung it. Keeping the bowstring taut was bad for the bow’s limbs and could even reduce its elasticity.
After stowing the Hunting Bow, he stepped out of the bus.
He saw Nash butchering the Thunderbirds, with drumsticks, wings, necks, and feet scattered on the ground.
"Stop!" Feng Shan strode forward, his heart aching as he saw that Nash had only kept the breast meat and thrown away all the other parts.
"Is this how you guys butcher a bird?"
"???" Nash looked utterly confused.
"What a waste!" Feng Shan knew the answer from Nash’s expression. He knelt and started picking up the discarded bird parts.
’All I can say is, Alaska’s resources are too abundant if people only eat the breast meat.’
"Go get the Hot Water Bottle."
Taking the Hot Water Bottle, Feng Shan poured the hot water into a basin and soaked the Thunderbirds in it.
He plucked the feathers and cleaned the drumsticks, necks, feet, hearts, gizzards, livers, and kidneys separately. Besides the intestines, every part of the Thunderbird was put to good use, allowing it to die a worthy death.
"See? This is how you should prepare a Thunderbird from now on."
As he processed the Thunderbird, Feng Shan demonstrated for Nash, correcting his wasteful mindset.
Suddenly, Coca-Cola squeezed out of the bus and started meowing at Feng Shan, glancing toward the vehicle’s door from time to time.
"What is it?" Although Feng Shan couldn’t communicate directly with Coca-Cola, after using the Beast Taming Technique, he could roughly sense the animal’s emotions.
"Nash, you finish butchering the birds." Feng Shan stood up and walked toward the bus. After a few steps, he turned his head back uneasily and warned, "Don’t throw anything away except the intestines."
He stepped into the bus.
Feng Shan saw the radio’s light flashing, indicating that someone was on the air.
’At this time of day, those old-timers are usually busy with their own stuff. Why would they be free to bullshit on the radio?’
He switched on the radio.
Before he could speak, a clamor of voices erupted from the radio.
"Does anyone have a plane? Get to Kevik Camp, quick!"
"Damn it, how could a brown bear attack the camp? How’s Susan?"
"Not sure. I heard a Hunter was passing through Kevik Camp to refuel and found Susan lying in the camp, covered in blood."
"God help her. I hope she’s okay."
"Have you made contact with Kevik Camp?"
"Contact’s lost. Sounds like there’s a blizzard over there. The radio equipment might be damaged."
"Damn it, I’m contacting Calvin in Barrow Town. He’s the closest to Kevik Camp."
Feng Shan was confused at first, but he gathered from their conversation that something had happened at Kevik Camp. Aunt Susan had been attacked by a brown bear.
’Ever since I came to Crown Territory, the cheerful Aunt Susan has taken good care of me, teaching me everything from common sense for living on the Tundra to how the weather changes. I can’t just ignore this now that she’s in trouble.’
He immediately picked up the handset.
"Fellas, what’s going on?"
"Feng, Susan’s been attacked by a brown bear. We don’t know if she’s dead or alive."
"If you’re able, go check on the situation."
"Fack, Crown Territory is over 300 kilometers from Kevik Camp. Is Feng supposed to get there in time for Susan’s funeral?"
"I have a plane. I can get there fast," Feng Shan said calmly. "I’m leaving now. Take down my satellite phone number and stay in touch: 8816XXXXXX."
After speaking, Feng Shan dropped the handset, turned, and rushed out of the bus. "Nash, with me!" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
The two of them went to the runway, ripped the rain cover off the Carnation, and quickly installed the specialized snow skis.
Everything was ready.
Feng Shan climbed into the cockpit, powered up the systems, and checked the fuel lines. Once he confirmed everything was normal, he slid open the side window. "Nash, you stay at the camp. I’ll contact you by radio if anything comes up."
Then, he piloted the Carnation into the sky, heading toward Kevik Camp.
At the Carnation’s cruising speed of 100 mph, the nearly 250-mile journey would take two and a half hours.
As Feng Shan flew the plane, anxiety flashed in his eyes. He wished he could instantly teleport to Kevik Camp.
The Carnation sped through the sky. Because Kevik Camp was only 30 kilometers from the Arctic Ocean, the weather grew more severe the closer he got.
Soon, a massive cloud bank lay ahead. The clouds formed a uniform, curtain-like layer, thick and a deep, dark gray.
At the Carnation’s current altitude of 3,000 meters, he still couldn’t see the top of the cloud layer.
Feng Shan was no longer the rookie he’d been when he first arrived. To survive in the Far North Tundra, reading the clouds was a must-have skill.
’This is a dense, massive snow cloud.’
This type of weather system didn’t just bring heavy snowfall; it was also accompanied by strong, cold air currents and could even produce thundersnow.
The Carnation flew along the edge of the snow cloud, and he could clearly see large snowflakes hitting the windshield.
’What should I do?’
Feng Shan’s brow furrowed. Thinking of how Aunt Susan had looked out for him, he knew his conscience wouldn’t let him turn back now.
He took out the thin grass rope to perform a divination.
A single knot appeared on the rope, and a premonition of safety settled in his heart.
Immediately, Feng Shan’s gaze became resolute. He pushed the throttle to maximum and plunged headfirst into the vast snow cloud, like a lone, brave petrel diving into a raging storm.
Instantly, the Carnation was swallowed by the thick clouds. His vision blurred as the plane began to tremble. Turbulent air currents battered the fuselage, rocking the aircraft from side to side as if it could lose control at any moment.
Feng Shan gripped the control stick tightly, struggling to keep the plane balanced.
His eyes were glued to the front, and though his view was completely obscured by the clouds, he didn’t dare relax for a second.
Inside the cockpit, the instrument panel readings flickered erratically, indicating the danger of their current situation.
Alarms blared like a frantic funeral drum, and the fuselage groaned and creaked as if protesting its entry into such an extreme environment.
Feng Shan kept one eye on the navigation instruments and the other on the view ahead, constantly adjusting the plane’s attitude and speed to decrease altitude.
Finally, through the vast expanse of white snow, he could vaguely make out the silhouette of the camp.
However, as he flew over the camp, his heart sank.
The runway was completely buried under the raging blizzard. There was no clear spot to land.
The situation was critical, leaving no room for even a moment’s hesitation.
He gritted his teeth and decided to force a landing.
’Good thing I installed the skis on the plane before I left.’
Feng Shan tried hard to recall the countermeasures for extreme weather that Tom had taught him during his flight training.
First, slow the plane’s descent as much as possible to avoid losing control upon landing too quickly.
At the same time, pay close attention to changes in wind direction and speed, skillfully using the crosswind to adjust the plane’s heading.
The Carnation’s wings rocked back and forth in the air currents as it descended, struggling to find its balance.
A vast expanse of white snow appeared before him.
Through the windshield, Feng Shan carefully observed the undulations of the snowy ground and the depth of the snow, searching for a relatively flat and solid area.
He kept searching until he found a spot he deemed suitable.
Taking a deep breath, Feng Shan gripped the control stick with both hands, focusing all his concentration on piloting the Carnation.
He dove straight for the ground.
